  1. no, its like camparing apples to apples that before they were ripe looked really good and then before they got a chance to ripen were ripped from the vine, were told for 2 solid years that the WERE oranges and then were smashed between the but cheeks of a fat hairy guy named Bubba and then left out in the sun to rot.
  2. way too much has been made abour pierre's bas year. he still hit what .275 and stole what 50-60 bases? both his request, prior, and zambrano's are legitimate in my opinion. It doesn't surprise me either. He has no sense of loyalty to the Cubs, the media hyped him, Hendry paid big in prospects, why not in cash? I don't think he would get it in arby, but Hendry won't find out. He'll pay.
  3. ouch. Well played.
  4. I would suggest that your friend is more of a Cubs fan than a Phillies Phan.
  5. (really, I hadn't noticed he didn't get his high, that's astonishing) In '02 and '03 he walked 98 and 88 times respectively. Last year, only 85 walks. The Chubbs really do hate the walk. I usually want a guy to try to work the count for walks. But if a guy is seeing the ball and hitting like Lee was last year, if he gets a pitch he can handle I want him to drive it. I guess I'm saying I'd rather see his OBP go up with a double than with a walk. Bottom line is: its about OBP not walks, and his OBP was a carreer high. It's still shocking that as well as he was hitting he wouldn't have enough PAs where the pitcher had no interest in throwing a strike to top his best But that's still not evidence of the Cubs' hitting philosophy not valuing walks. (not that we need that peice of evidence for a conviction). Its evidence that either the league continued to think Lee would slow down, or that since their was no one on base and often no threat behind him, that they weren't that worried if he gapped a double. I'm going with 2.

  7. He can't stay healthy for even a half year. He makes Wood look like an iron man. (Not knocking Wood, he's one of my favorite players.) He needs to do something pretty soon to justify his spot on the 40 man roster. well, not much was lost this year. I guess that evaluation can be made next fall. They should have traded Guzman a couple years ago. I am wondering if drafting and developing pitchers is really a good way to go. I sure hope it is. That's the only legitimate, consistent plan we've seen from the Cubs over the last 5-10 years. It has resulted Wood over Jamie Jones or Todd Helton, Prior over Teixera or Chris Burke (ok, just Teixera). Though the failures have been many, the few times it is successful outweigh the greater likelihood of injury.........i think. I dunno
  8. Detroit paid him last year. But no, he didn't appear in any games. now there's a philosophy we could use with Neifi!
  9. And substantially better than Corey was at 26. Remember Corey at 22 and 23 was "untouchable" :(
  10. I agree Wheelimus. Not an excuse, but in what other big city is "the team" so important? New York and LA have much bigger celebrities, and boston isn't quite the city Chicago is.
  11. How close is this to what Dawson had done a bazillion times?
  12. Mabry can play 3rd and may be the reason the Cubs released Macias. then he's definitely better than Hollandsworth!
  13. You answered you own question. Most who would want Vidro would prefer to keep walker. But if you MUST trade Walker, Vidro fits the mold they like as well. That's why Hendry won't.
  14. buh-dum-chee
  15. I've got to agree with this wholeheartedly. Makes me wonder why we'd even contemplate Prior in a trade for tejada I have no sound reason to believe this, but I get the strange feeling that Prior is the one who wants Walker's defense gone. Its been stated all along that "the pitchers" want better defense. You trade Prior, you keep Walker. Keep Prior and hello Neifi!
  16. 1. Zambrano already had a breakout year...or two...just nobody noticed. 2. He predicts Lee and Carpenter to to revert to norms...duh.
  17. Actually, the "speaking his mind" part played a lesser part with the Cubs than it did with other teams as far as Walker is concerned. The Cubs, from the front office on down to some members of the pitching staff, do not like Walker's defense. And the Cubs do seem to be on a "defense" kick these days. None of us is privy to everything that goes on behind closed doors, so who knows what has gone on. Myself? I'd keep Walker and start him. But that's just me. Not that I am disagreeing with the notion that the cubs have been looking to improve defense recently, but then why move Patterson? I love his skills, especially defensively. If I were in charge (glad I'm not :) ), I would have him start the season as the fourth outfielder, getting spot starts in place of Murton. If Patterson finds his swing and becomes the player that he was in the first half of '03. Then we'd have a whole nother, but a good problem. Just my thoughts. Not trying to be argumentative. I for one agree. These are grown men. And Corey *is* under the control of the Cubs. He can't go anywhere but up in performance and trade value.
  18. While I don't find any proof (or disproof) for clutch, I do believe in streaks. I do believe that at times players "see the ball better". Barry Bonds or Sammy on June 12, 1998 (in the middle of his 20 homers in one month month). I go with Sammy.
  19. BTW Baseball Reference lists him as 23 in 2004.
  20. Thebaseballcube, the Orioles, and ESPN list Val's bday as March 1981, and Pie's as Feb 1985, but they say Val was 20 in 2004. I'd need some clarification. On a strictly numbers basis he does compare favorably to Pie, but what were his true ages in those seasons? And, Pie has nearly 1500 pro at bats, while Val has less than 1000, and apparently didn't play at all in 2005 while recovering from a torn labrum. I'm not sure he's a fair comparison to Pie when all is said and done. And no, I wouldn't trade Pie for Patterson. ESPN.com and the O's website both list that '81 birthday for Majewski. Well that would be an entirely different story and likely equal value for C-Pat.
  21. Kess, you beat me to it. Majewski for Patterson would make sense. I don't know anything about him except for his numbers in the minors, where he's totaled a line of .300/.358/.504, with small but efficient base stealing numbers, and respectable k/bb numbers (much better than Pie's, for instance). I would consider him greater than nothing for Patterson. I'd go a lot farther than "greater than nothing" From numbers alone, he looks as young, but much more developed (patient) than Pie. In a hypothetical world would you trade Pie for Patterson? Or is it a poor comp. because Pie is a true CFer?
  22. Maddux wasn't traded he was a free agent. He know, he just bein' silly (note that he also said Maddux didn't do anything. Silliness)
  23. 22) Kerry Wood will FINALLY have that breakout season we've been predicting here for 3 years, simply because noone has predicted it this year ...OH CRAP, jinxed again. 21) Dempster, Howry and Eyre will anchor the best bullpen in baseball. 20) Baker will go fishing in Lake Michigan and mysteriously dissappear.
  24. With all the Patterson talk, sounds like Prior and C-Pat for Tejada and Bedard might get it done. I hope not. I might be able to live with that deal. I have to know that Bedard is going to be sure fire 2 though. No Prior, No Prior, No Prior.
