  1. soccer. :) competitive ping pong World Tiddley-winks Classic.
  2. anyone have video of this?
  3. Tastes like chicken. mmmmm...chicken
  4. I can almost taste it!
  5. Let the guarded optimism begin. It feels like spring!
  6. Unforunately, that's what we've said for the past two years. I agree and they still have three pretty decent starters. If they add Huff or another RBI guy to go along with Berkman they will be tough. To me, the key for the Cubs is obvious, pitching. Lee will likely regress a little, Aramis hopefully will produce, but the Cubs have to find someone to step up in the five slot and table set in the two slot. Pierre will be fine at the top of the order. Hopefully Walker comes out hot in ST and then produces at career norms, that would go a long way to solidifying the lineup. I am optimistic about Murton and Cedeno but I don't think we should count on either of them to be diffence makers. All and all, I am hopeful but not optimistic. I'd have to agree. I'm hopeful but not optimistic, too. There are ifs contingent to this team's success. If the Cubs stay healthy, they could make the playoffs. If the younger players produce offensively... If pitchers get injured and Hill and/or Guzman perform well... If Hendry is able to add a power hitting, all-star caliber RFer... So, I'm hopeful. It can happen. But I would be optimistic if Giles had been signed. Same if's the past 4 years. The stars have to align eventually, don't they?
  7. These your picks UK?
  8. Walker turns 33 in May. What are the chances he significantly declines this year? I meant at this stage of his relationship with Hendry, Baker and the Cubs. Not this age. I think he's perfectly capable of being a starting 2B. He'd be my starting 2B on this roster and hit 2nd in the order unless I could trade him for a significant upgrade elsewhere while getting adequate production at his position. I know that's what you meant. Perhaps the question fits in the Walker discussion better.

  10. I don't see Dusty putting Walker in the 2-hole. Pierre Perez Lee Jones ARam Murton/Walker Cedeno/Murton Barrett get used to it.
  11. Those are certainly the staff numbers we've been looking for since 2003. Those are staff numbers capable of taking any division in baseball. I'm holding firm to my assertion that this team has to win the one-run games, likely 4-3 or 5-4, to have any chance this year. Also, I've argued in several other threads that Maddux is better than Williams and will have a better year in 2006 than Williams (with much dispute from others), and it is nice to see several "professional" sources make the same prediction. I have to belive that one of Prior, Wood or Z has a 2.xx ERA this year.
  12. You are a marxist. While I find your opinions insightful, based largely in fact, and most often correct, they are still opinions. Requiring someone to be indoctrinated before posting is ridiculous.
  13. Yoda and Terence Mann all at once. LOL! I thought Terrance Mann was Vader. :? This could mean some serious problems for the force.
  14. Montanez has made up for lost time the last two years. And he just turned 24.
  15. Sammy Sosa days
  16. He did the same thing with the D-Rays and when Piniella asked him why he didn't even react when the border line pitch was called strike three to end the game he supposedly responded "What difference does it make?". That pretty much sums up Grieve, talent but no drive or passion. What a waste. Or maybe he has respect for authority. And he knows that arguing balls and strikes with an umpire won't "make a difference" unless you want rung up. So he has respect for authority, but he answered his manager's legit question with "what difference does it make". That's a nonsense argument. It makes no positive difference to argue with umpires. One of the things I have against Moises Alou.
  17. Those stats show that the Cubs haven't gotten any significant production production out of their recent shortstops, and shouldn't be used to backup any point about why Neifi isn't that bad. Here are more relevant statistics: Out of all NL shortstops who had 500 PAs last year, Neifi ranked 10th out of 11 in OBP Out of all NL shortstops who had 500 PAs last year, Neifi ranked 7th out of 11 in SLG. He is a poor hitter and we all know that. What people here hate isn't Neifi, it's that even with his pathetic offensive production Dusty still batted him at the top of the order, preventing Derrek Lee from turning his doubles and HRs into more runs. That being said, I like him on my team as a 25th guy. I hate him being used as an everyday player batting in front of Derrek. This is the first good point in this thread. Dunston and Bowa were in an era where Shortstops weren't expected to produce. And AGonz can't be used to legitimize anyone's production.
  18. they have a bias against teams that do dumb stuff. some of their writers are even self-loathing cub fans. fixed

  20. Not to nitpick, but I think you've reversed them. Dr. Henry Jekyll was the scientist, while Edward Hyde was his deranged alter-ego. but i bet hyde had a better fastball. He was a clubhouse cancer. Alas, I did have them reversed. Hyde did have the better fastball. But, it was all over the place and he kept walking people. Whereas the Dr. was spot on everytime. :-) I think you have them confused with Dr. Maddux and Mr. Farnsworth
  21. The big picture for me is Hendry hasn't built a great team yet, and he's been awful the past two offseasons. Unlike some fans, and apparantly the Cubs management, I'm not satisfied with mediocrity. It's hard to have a great team when you build the team around dominant pitching only to have your dominant pitchers not stay healthy. Not to mention when two of your middle of the order guys can't stay on the field consistently. If Wood, Prior, and Z each make 30 starts this year and we don't win 90 games then Hendry is to blame. But until we can keep our best players on the field I don't think Hendry is entirely at fault. well maybe if hendry relied a little bit more on building a team with a top 5 OBP, we wouldn't have to rely so much on pitching. I'll take dominant pitching over top 5 OBP always. Dominant pitching wins championships not top 5 OBP. Why not try to have both if you have the financial means?
  22. Don't stone me, but Hidalgo looks like a classic case of steroids to me. Either way he's seen major decline by age 30!?! Stay away.
  23. no, its like camparing apples to apples that before they were ripe looked really good and then before they got a chance to ripen were ripped from the vine, were told for 2 solid years that the WERE oranges and then were smashed between the but cheeks of a fat hairy guy named Bubba and then left out in the sun to rot.
