  1. lol at Z. Legendary character. Some very good players are easily forgotten, whereas some merely good players are remembered forever. Regardless of where you or his career stats ultimately place Z, even the casual fan will never forget him, and us die-hards will be telling our grandchildren stories of his uniqueness.
  2. How many starting hitters hit .366 let alone pitchers? How much more valuable does 70 ABs make Zambrano than say Dempster? wait a minute... he's a pinch hitter now too.
  3. Its more about the relationship of the "number to the remaining games. If the magic number is 18 with with 20 games to play then its too early. If the magic number is 22 with 38 games to play (see Anaheim, Los Angeles Angels of) then go for it. Also if you could go .500 and clinch at any point in the season, then yes.
  4. dead
  5. all of you referencing 2003 in this thread are dead to me now.
  6. Except if the Cubs won this year, there'd be 99 years between championships. OK, make it 100 wins for AVOIDING 100 years between championships. Actually, it'd be 100 years between championships, from 1908 to 2008. There are 99 years of drought, though. oooh ....... BURN!
  7. number of wins to clinch playoff spot (wildcard) is 30.
  8. regarding Lilly's performance: Any of you guys think that after the team using up the bullpen yesterday, lilly was instructed to pitch to contact even more than usual to conserve pitches and go deeper. on a grander scale, to things like this affect players' statistic over the course of a season?
  9. I refuse to believe that statistic. Straight from the mouth of Pat Hughes. I just can't believe that the Cubs in the last 63 years have been unable to win 8 in a row on the road. I mean I know the Cubs haven't had the best teams, but wow. :-k I swore ESPN said the cubs' downfall this year was that they were terrible on the road. it was until 8 road games ago, but then few teams do well on the road
  10. Indeed, but I wouldn't be so sure the Cubs would have pulled the trigger on Harden if Hill were replicating last year. If Hill was in the rotation all year Gallagher would not have gotten the ML experience that made him such an attractive bargaining chip. THus no deal
  11. So his plan is to break their focus for a split second and sort press a restart button? Nice theory. Kinda crazy.
  12. Keep it coming. I'm watching the game, but I'm sure those who are watching on gameday really appreciate it! Didn't notice until you asked the question. Very nice for those of us in the hinterlands.
  13. reminiscent of this game.
  14. For a 120 OPS+, I'd give a couple of decent minor leaguers. Ibanez would force Edmonds to the bench and give us a heck of a pinch hitter. I'm not convinced Edmonds will stay healthy all year. I agree with you...Even if Ibanez isn't playing real well this year the fact that we could get another left handed center fielder in case of a Edmonds injury. He's not much worse this year than previous years. OPS+ from 2001 to 2008: 115, 122, 103, 116, 115, 125, 121, 120 What is OPS+ anyway? How can you possibly have 4500 post at NSBB and not know this? The education committee is not doing their job!
  15. If that's what you want...you're in the wrong place, pal. The motto of NSBB is "question everything"
  16. Not that I want to get into this discussion for the 100th time...but... You cannot blame him for the loss; 9 professionals on the diamond should have had the mental wherewithal to not get flustered and distracted. However, to say he "had nothing to do with losing that game" is inaccurate. I believe if Alou had caught that ball, the fan-graph would have climbed higher and the other "Mo" on the field - momentum - would have carried either Prior or AGonz avoiding their mental miscues. Also if the Castillo foul ball is caught, Castillo doesn't walk, there are two outs and A-Gonz is think first base instead of thinking double play. A small difference, but a significant one. Returning to my original caveat, however, the 9 professionals should have had the mental wherewithal to persevere.
  17. just as long as he doesn't sit in the front two rows.
  18. And if the trend has caught up to him such that hitters aren't "leaving the bat on their shoulders"
  19. Hmm....better jump or speed? Instincts
  20. He was trying to prevent the DP
  21. then he shouldn't be promoted. If you're going to burn an option on him, at least see what he's made of Samardzija's option was burned back in March. que? when he was added to the 40-man, i believe. He was added to the 40 man when he was signed. Every guy on the 40 man is on the active roster in spring training. if they don't break camp with the major league club or on the DL, they burn an option. Gotcha, I didn't know that. yeah, at the end of ST he was optioned from his blog: looks like he was right
  22. no way Samardzija starts. Z Demps Lilly Harden Shark? really? That would have to mean Marquis is out of the rotation. Does this really happen?
  23. impeding? was that intentional? if so, well played.
  24. We have two RHs now. #-o Noted! Except one of the RHs is LH
