  1. I *think* that buying out Huet would switch them from a 5.6 million cap hit the next two years to a 1.9 million cap hit for the next four years.
  2. This Albert Pujols guy looks pretty good. Is he a free agent anytime soon? We should look into getting him.
  3. Because they want you to call your cable company and say "Get me that local channel!"
  4. Wild pickoff throw to first scores a runner from third with 2 outs. I know I'm supposed to be rooting against the Cardinals, but I do hate me some Reds. This is funny.
  5. I must have done that half-a-dozen times during the Red Sox-Yankees game yesterday. Every year.
  6. Which I don't get how they can be anyone's dark horse. Aaron Harrang is their opening day starter. They also have some lefty in AA who was mediocre in the Cuban league last year.
  7. The NFL makes its money via national broadcast deals. MLB's money comes from regional cable stations, which need leverage over local cable providers to convince them to pick up the channel. Blackouts are a key part of that.
  8. Okay, I was gonna let this go and not pollute the thread. But I did some digging, and my sources aren't secret. I e-mailed Mike Shannon, who runs IndianaAirwaves.com, which covers news involving the Indiana radio scene. They've been covering the $7,000-case that I brought up and you said wasn't the one you are talking about. I asked him if he knew how common it was for Indiana high school stations to be fined by the FCC. This was his response. Bold added. Who to believe... who to believe...
  9. Well, for one thing, putting a normalized stat into negative numbers frequently can make some calculations kind of nasty.
  10. The unfortunate corollary to not believing that the slump meant we'd play bad in the playoffs is that a three-game win streak doesn't make me believe we're getting hot going into the playoffs.
  11. I just felt my first pang of Cubs optimism. There's just so much bad in the NL. Pirates, Nationals, Padres, Mets, Diamondbacks are all bad. I'm also far from sold on the Reds. That leaves four playoff spots for 10 teams. It would take some luck, but that's not awful odds.
  12. Fangraphs' opening day chat, running all day with a bunch of internet stathead names participating, has been pretty good. "10:34 Dan Szymborski: I like how Houston's plan to winning the division, have their 4 good player somehow play 162 games, was thwarted by game 1."
  13. Yankees-Red Sox may be overplayed, but it also features two of the best teams and many of baseball's big stars. It's not just of interest to the northeast.
  14. I just threw up in my mouth a little. The guy has a low-OBP 785 OPS in his minor league career and he's never hit above AA. Every year in late February, even the non-stathead media talks a good game about how spring training games don't mean anything. Then by April, they've all got a boner for some guy who ripped up the Cactus League.
  15. [random old-time player from current opponent] just [did something today's players from current opponent have done frequently in this game]
  16. Why did you take a course with such a stupid start time ??? Because that's the only time said course was offered. Change majors, imo.
  17. You patted yourself on the back for being right about Hart and said that many people on the board disagreed with you at the time, when virtually (if not literally) no one disagreed with you about him. You've ignored this fact repeatedly while people question you on it. Hey guys, remember that time I said Neifi Perez wouldn't hit 40 HRs in a year and a bunch of you said he would? I'm so awesome.
  18. unless you want them in the first round, we should be rooting for detroit to win Them losing today clinched the division. Not that it was in doubt, but it's nice to know when it happens.
  19. http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr_2004/octqtr/47cfr1.80.htm The standard fine for missing a station ID is $1,000. Where did $20,000 come from?
  20. He could be talking about a different incident. Unverifiable to this point. Beech Grove High School does not appear to have a radio station.
  21. It's vaguely based on a true story. http://www.journalgazette.net/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20091006/LOCAL04/310069922
  22. If we dump Fukudome and his contract, what are we going to spend the money on that helps the team more?
  23. Let's just run this win streak through the rest of the (post)season, plz.
