  1. Who are you even talking to? Anyone who says we're asking for too much of a return for Garza. Nobody said that.
  2. Well, yeah. $30 million in surplus value over two years isn't enough to get you multiple blue chip prospects, unless teams get really desperate for starting pitching. They might get that desperate eventually, but at the moment it doesn't seem that way.
  3. Zambrano on an AL team, with a DH, loses roughly 1/3rd of his value at this point.
  4. A .500 season will be nice, and I think that's definitely within reach (at least unless Garza is dumped for A-ballers).
  5. Random gut prediction: A deal was settled sometime in the last day or two, but we're waiting on physicals and it'll be a day or two before it's announced. Like with Ian Stewart except this time involving useful players.
  6. Fourth outfielders : Hoyer 2nd basemen::Hendry
  7. That would be a great haul, but don't see it happening. I bet they would make Cubs choose between Turner and Porcello. After that, they'll make us choose between Scarlett Johansson and Kathy Bates.
  8. fWAR and bWAR for pitchers are very, very different. fWAR is based almost entirely on peripherals, which makes it more predictive. bWAR is literally just taking how many runs the pitcher allowed in his total innings, vs. how many a replacement pitcher would have allowed in the same innings.
  9. I would, but only because I'm not quite as sold out on Garza as most are.
  10. Writers didn't like him and a lot of his value was in walks and OBP, which weren't well-understood at the time.
  11. A very, very slim chance.
  12. Colvin was never going to be average. Colvin was and is terrible. His minor league record suggests that he's a 250/280/420 type hitter in the big leagues, and that's what he's been in the big leagues. LeMahieu I think has a chance to be average, but a lot depends on how his defense plays at 2b.
  13. Fortunately for him, the first half counted, too. The NL average 2b only hit .258 .319 .380 last year, so it's not like he has a huge hurdle to overcome.
  14. Seeing recent moves like signing Sonnanstine also signal that we're not players for guys like Jackson. If its truly gonna be Dempster (3), Z (3), Wells (5) and Wood (5) - lets hope we pick up some innings eater rather than what happended last year. Guys like Coleman - I hope to never see again. I'm assuming those numbers are meant to be representing the pitcher's abilities, and if so I'd say way off on Wood.
  15. If 81 games is the upside, I'd rather they just lose 100. The slight increase in draft position <<<< the torched revenue from a 100-loss season.
  16. I think he's way overestimating there. Or more specifically, he's underestimating what gets filed under "organizational/operating expenses" by tens of millions of dollars.
  17. That's before trading Garza, Marmol, Soto, and possibly Soriano & Dempster without receiving anyone who will likely contribute anything to the major league roster in 2012. Possibly. But we flipped Marshall for two players who could significantly contribute in 2012, so Epstein has earned a little faith from me in that regard.
  18. I think people are overstating how bad the 2012 Cubs are. More specifically, I think that the moves Epstein has made have been underappreciated in terms of how they impact the 2012 wins and losses (except for Ian Stewart. He sucks). I've got this team at about 74 wins right while getting nothing from Go Away at 1b and Wells as the No. 5 starter. Between the room for further pickups and variance/upside, I'd say we have a real chance to win 81 games in 2012.
  19. Yeah. He's a righty and calling his stuff "Fringey" might be overstating it.
  20. Not excellent if given 40 man spot. If all it was was an invite it would be cool. Significantly less impressed now.
  21. Brett over at bleachernation.com says these non-guaranteed split deals still put them on the 40-man roster, which means we are at 39 plus Reed Johnson. I'm less impressed now.
  22. Fangraphs had a moderately interesting article on Sonnanstine recently. I don't really see any way to slice things up that don't leave him in the "Terrible" category, though. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/andy-sonnanstine-and-situational-babip/
