  1. Plate discipline is a skillset. You can try to teach it, but you can also try to teach Hayden Simpson to throw 93 again. There's no guarantee of results.
  2. And pitching well. 8 up, 8 down so far. I probably just jinxed him.
  3. They're going to score this inning. Over/under on home runs this inning: 1.5
  4. Sometimes. He's pretty much all over the place.
  5. Vitters and Rizzo have already extended their hit streaks with singles.
  6. Assuming that Volstad only goes five because of his pitch total, my Sveum Bullpen Management experience tells me that it will be Wood for the 6th and 7th and Marmol for the 8th and 9th.
  7. Unlucky bounce on the throw. We've had some crummy breaks like that this year.
  8. I don't think anybody had "indifference" in the Ramirez return pool.
  9. I'm sure it's just a late-arriving crowd, but I can't remember the last time I saw that many empty seats at Wrigley Field.
  10. Wind blowing out 20 mph to right field. Ian, this is your night to shine. I feel it coming.
  11. I find that to be the most remarkable stat. There's got to be a minimum PA qualifier or I call shenanigans.
  12. Brett Jackson with the rarely seen walk-off triple.
  13. I'm trying to remember, but I don't think Samardzija hung a single slider today. He missed in the dirt with some, but no hangers, which is amazing consistency for him.
  14. It is really nice not to have any "why bother" spots in the rotation this year.
  15. Okay, they won, so good things: 1) I love the way our defense is aligned, especially in the infield, to be extremely aggressive and maximize outs. 2) I guess I can get on board with this baserunning thing. If nothing else, it's going to be cool when Castro posts a gaudy stolen base total to go along with all his other awesome stats. Pretty sure he already leads the league.
  16. :good: Also: It was off a lefty.
  17. Samardzija's slider just worked like a really awesome changeup all day.
  18. Hey look, we're making great use of an asset that was already in place. He's still leaving his fastball up and out over the plate a little too often, but velocity is the ultimate margin of error for a pitcher.
  19. It's more of a complaint about the existence of the role itself.
  20. I do like how mix-and-match and platoon happy we are willing to be. Just wish it involved better players.
  21. I keep having this nightmare scenario play through my head: 2012: We were too bad last season to make it worth adding a big-time contract. 2013: Ditto 2014: We almost made it to .500, but there's only a couple of impact players on the market, and the Dodgers and Yankees went to insane numbers on them and we should be thankful we didn't try to match that. 2015: Attendance has been down the last few years because of all the awful teams, and we still don't have the cable megadeal like those big market teams, so we have to be prudent.
  22. Would just like it noted that I tacked my thoughts onto the manager poll and a mod made this its own thread. So, basically, TT is agreeing that he got the role based on his service time and because everyone else is Unproven. I remain unimpressed with Wood as a reliever. Yeah, he finally got the walks down below 4BB/9 last year, but I'm not convinced he can keep it there.
  23. Loss of velocity, loss of movement, loss of command. Something's happening in that right arm, and it's about to blow, imo. Velocity and movement point to shoulder, command points to elbow. Could it be both?
