  1. I'm pretty sold on Almora, and he seems like an Epstein kind of pick. Young 18, high floor, high enough ceiling, tested against elite competition from a young age. He's got a higher floor than any of the other HS prospects due to his CF defense, and as Tim put it the other day, all pitchers are low floor. Almora fits into the "everyone is wrong a lot in the draft, but we want to be less wrong" idea.
  2. His first three seasons in the minors, he had 49 SBs vs. 31 HRs.
  3. Vitters OPS moves past .800, hopefully never to return.
  4. Hard to see the ball but the reaction is fun.
  5. You're right, of course. I'm being super nit-picky, especially when I'm complaining about the lack of top-25 prospects in an organization that would (in this discussion) have a pair of 22-year-olds in the majors who would be no-doubt top-25 if they were still in the minors. The only place I'd quibble is that I think that's a bit too optimistic on Baez and Soler. Both have quite a bit to prove before they become top-25 guys.
  6. I have a really, really hard time putting that on Vitters. Unless it's for another team. I want to, and it'd be awesome, but I just don't see him being better than Ian Stewart at this time next year, and I don't see us getting good trade value for Stewart unless the BABIP gods stop crapping all over him.
  7. Then Rizzo gets promoted and it drops significantly. Eh. Soler, Jackson, Baez, Lake, a now hitting Vitters, 3 top 70 picks selected by guys that know how to draft is still a pretty strong system with high end talent. I don't want to get into the semantics of what counts as "high-end" talent, but I don't see a top-25 prospect anywhere on that list. Depth is nice, but give me some true impact talent.
  8. I'll disagree on that one, but I'm a big fan of Brett. I honestly think he's a 3 to 4 WAR guy for us. I'm still not going to be even remotely sold on Vitters until he keeps this up for a full season, instead of a month long Soriano-like streak. Yeah, that seems pretty far out there to me. Despite his recent slump and Vitters' hot streak, Jackson still has better numbers at a more premium position. As Tim said, he's also had more time at the level and is a year older. And 3b is a premium position too (and currently one that has a lower OPS in the NL than CF).
  9. It seems like there is a starting pitching glut on the market this year. Unless someone really just has to have Garza and won't settle for anyone else, it's hard to see the return being too crazy awesome.
  10. Then Rizzo gets promoted and it drops significantly.
  11. gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme
  12. It's probably just the excitement of a hot streak talking, but the dropoff from Rizzo to Jackson seems bigger to me than Jackson to Vitters.
  13. Only if he promises to keep his BABIP around .400. 2011: .332BABIP 4.2 WAR And what year is it now?
  14. Only if he promises to keep his BABIP around .400.
  15. Screw it, I'm in. This kid is exciting.
  16. Doesn't make the Marlon Byrd trade feel even better. Epic sell low.
  17. Why is Strasburg risky? Because he got Tommy John? Half the pitchers in the league have Tommy John. PS I would trade Starlin for Stanton. Dude's a legit beast, on pace for a 40 HR season with a .970 OPS and he's only 22. Because he's a pitcher.
  18. Someone over at BN brought up Giancarlo Stanton, and I had to admit that was tempting.
  19. Explains new system slotting system and how it prevents teams from over- or under-spending in the draft. Predicts that after the third round, you'll have very few HS players go. Just JC and college. Overall draft is a little below average. No obvious top-tier talent, okay depth. Cubs are really hoping for a couple of guys who may or may not fall to them, didn't specify. Then most of the time was spent talking about the White Sox. White Sox position prospects are hands-down the worst in baseball. Thinks they may find a way to be cheap even with the new rules.
  20. Is there an option for "Meh" or "Doesn't matter" or "Whatever"?
  21. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the good people at GRB were not very receptive to my requirement of Shelby Miller, Oscar Taveras, and David Freese for Castro. Pass.
  22. Strawman. No one said "can't enjoy." The argument is "enjoy slightly less." No it isn't. You've said "ruined" all along. It is a lie. When something could be 10 on a 1-10 awesome scale, and instead it's an 8.5, I think it's reasonable to say it was "ruined."
