I am too. But Gould is fine. He'd easily be our 2nd best pitching prospect, behind Vizcaino. I guess it all depends on what we could have got from the Yankees or Rangers, which we'll likely never know. There's still Garza, but I'm hoping for some type of surprise insanity trade with the D Backs for him. We could have gotten a funny look because I don't think they had any idea that they were in on Dempster. That was a planned leak by the Cubs' FO.
Jackson ahead of Almora and Soler? What do you guys think of Mayo? Judging by that statement alone, I don't think he's worth listening to on the Cubs' farm system. I've kinda of mentally slotted Vizcaino at No. 4, in his own tier behind Soler/Almora/Baez and ahead of the rest of the pack. If he is healthy by the middle of next year, he could be joining that top tier.
If Castillo were likely to be a really good starting catcher that would concern me, but there's not much to indicate that he is. I've never quite gotten the Castillo love - he looks like a nice backup or ok starter, but that's not the type of player you worry about blocking. And Soto doesn't look like the kind of player I really want to give another shot to try to bounce back, so that works out well :) I had him written off as a non-tender anyway.
He's had questions about his durability even before the TJS. There's still plenty of time to try him as a starter, but it wouldn't be shocking if he were turned into a reliever at some point. And with his stuff and command, he'd project to be a completely dominating reliever.
That's really exciting. I don't think they play matchups that hard in the minors, right? So in the majors, you could use his platoon effectively and get much better results out of him than in the minors, where they want him to get in work and practice against lefties.
Supposedly the Cubs had multiple offers for Johnson, so he was going to get them "something". He got them Chapman and Maholm got them Vizcaino. That's how I'm accounting it.
March so he may be ready by spring training? the guy had reconstructive surgery on his elbow. granted, it's not his shoulder, but still, he won't be the same. Between Theo-led mechanics magic and the recent advances in TJS, he'll probably be better.
Maholm had a 3.78 FIP last year and 4.11 this year. Is that really that much worse than Dempster? Now throw in his insanely team-friendly option for next year.
