  1. The proper comparison would be Cherington to Jed Hoyer. I'd say it's too early to tell who is better. Cherington was one of the candidates mentioned for the Cubs GM job when nobody was going to be brought in as president. He'd be in charge of the same thing Theo is in charge of. Baseball operations. Theo's title is what had to be done to get him here. I really can't agree. Regardless of what the media was reporting at the time, it seems as if Ricketts had his sights set on Epstein to run the broader baseball operations, and Epstein wanted to step away from the GM role.

  3. Did they take up you "4 war" stance? Basically calls him a 2.5 win player and then does the ol' Fangraphs Value calculation for his contract. Then voodoos in some BABIP to pad it. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/shane-victorino-boston-right-fielder/
  4. Fangraphs had a tepid, half-hearted defense that I can't be bothered to post a link to.
  5. SOSH is pretty suicidal over this one. His fWAR is weird, because when you start to break it down it sure seems like he sucks.
  6. I think he'll be the CF version of Bobby Hill. With maybe less hit tool.
  7. That sounds like desperation. Is that a bad thing? He had to make pretty major changes to be anything more useful than a decent 4th OF. I'm comfortable with the risk of screwing that up. It's not a bad thing that he's trying. It's a bad thing that it got to this point. Our sure fire, high-floor, AAA CFer turned is turning to hail mary shots to save his career less than a year later. It'd be really nice if it works, because our medium-term OF picture is hideous.
  8. Is Victorino hurt or something? He's been averaging 4 WAR a year. Why would 3/38 be terrible?
  9. Once Victorino signs, that just leaves Bourn as a worthwhile outfielder, right? I'm going to be pretty annoyed if we get aced out of all the good outfielders. It was a CF/OF heavy market, we've got a ton of money, we have one MLB quality starting OFer, and Hoyer even admitted we could use a veteran because we don't have any prospects that would be blocked.
  10. That's what we thought last year about Joe Mather. All it takes is two hot weeks in March and you're stuck with the guy all season.
  11. Fay Vincent outlawed steroid use in 1991.
  12. In the last two years, or even a little less: 1) We've graduated some nice crops of Dominican teenagers to the domestic leagues 2) Committed more than $50 million to IFA prospects 3) Had the 2011 overslot draft explosion, and that draft class had a great first full year as pros 4) Had the No. 6 pick in the draft and two comp picks in 2012 5) Traded at least half a dozen big leaguers for prospects That kind of resource commitment to the farm system is staggering. It should darn well be pretty elite after adding a No. 2 overall pick.
  13. The legend of 80/40 shall never die. Really great up-the-middle defense may not be a "tool," but it's enough for me to prefer him over Soler. Side note: I know it doesn't change his prospect rating, but it irks me how much we paid for Soler. It really takes away from the excess value if he pans out.
  14. Winning two WS means everything you do subsequently is correct.
  15. Maybe not if Rock Shoulders were eligible.
  16. http://forums.prosportsdaily.com/showthread.php?p=24533480#post24533480 Bruce Levine reports Cubs interest Bruce Levine ‏@ESPNBruceLevine Cubs talking to many agents about bullpen help .Former White Sox pitcher Jason Grilli on the list of relievers they like. Either Marlin Bystro is legit or Bruce has been going to NSBB or PSD for this scoops. Or Bruce is Marlin Bystro.
  17. Their strategy is to be a baseball team.
  18. What exactly are the Red Sox trying to do? Improve their team? That's pretty short-sighted of them.
  19. Back off, I called him first and have dibs.
  20. If we are matching last year's payroll, we still have about $25-30 million to spend.
  21. So we're now postulating that the front office intends to not compete for their first *four* seasons?
  22. Definitely seems that way. Seems like there's maybe half-a-dozen guys as good as the best ones last year.
  23. It seems like we're going to deal Marmol, but I'd rather not. It's not as if the bullpen is overflowing with potentially useful pitchers.
  24. That's impossible to answer. I don't want him given away for nothing. It depends on what sort of value you get in return.
