  1. Rule 5 is tomorrow. We might even make two picks!
  2. Holding out for the possibility of a bolt would lend at least a little to the "he doesn't care about the Cubs' fortunes" argument.
  3. The weird thing that I said was that it sort of implied that Epstein wanted the option to get out after five years, which makes the Cubs' current plan even more odd.
  4. If I thought Vizcaino could stick in the rotation long-term, I'd consider him here, but I don't so I won't.
  5. We don't need to trust defensive metrics down to the decimal point to know that Barney would be a pretty good defensive SS and Cabrera isn't, so that closes some of the offensive gap.
  6. Doesn't that seem unlikely to you?
  7. The value of team control is directly related to fungibility.
  8. Keppinger to the White Sox, apparently?
  9. The gap between Cabrera and Barney isn't that much when you have the former for 2 years and the latter for 4... I guess, but that's expecting the Diamondbacks to put an awful lot of faith in defensive metrics.
  10. I'm not the one who started the "snarky comments implying which direction we think the team should go" tangent. I'm just the best at it.
  11. Anyway, before the people attempting to threadjack get any further, some people have already jumped to Garza/Elsburry speculation.
  12. A quirk I totally understand. But we all have our crosses to bear, and I've learned to mostly deal with the backflips people will do to justify the Cubs' front office's actions.
  13. It's amazing how touchy people get about things that are either factual or at least undisputed. It's factual, undisputed, and irrelevant. Oh no! Theo's replacement isn't as good as Theo was! That proves that Theo is bad or something, because...others aren't as good as him.... The quality of Theo's handpicked replacement is irrelevant to the Cubs when he's also handpicking the guys to put in charge of the Cubs?
  14. It's amazing how touchy people get about things that are either factual or at least undisputed.
  15. I always assumed he wanted to build up meatball cred for a run at being a manager again.
  16. As always, the problem isn't the money, it's the playing time. That has value.
  17. I can't believe how dumb their fans are to eat that stuff up. Just because your front office says really smart-sounding things to justify their moves doesn't mean you have to believe it, guys. Edit: I've got a better one. What an idiot! I'm sure glad the guy who handpicked him to be the heir apparent in Boston isn't choosing the people to run our franchise.
  18. It'd be pretty bad. He's basically a replacement level player at this point even if you give him some BABIP credit for last year.
  19. Snakebitten by injuries last year, team focuses on depth. MLB front offices are really good at re-fighting the last war.
  20. I'm 90% sure the answer is no, they cannot be protected.
  21. My drum is "the front office isn't doing a good job unless they field a good baseball team at the Major League level." I know that's crazybuckets and it means I don't understand the "plan," but it's my drum.
  22. Ah yes, if only the Cubs had gotten the "let's give out terrible contracts because that will totally help us compete" memo. If you think they're lined up to be a lot better than last year, I've got some news for you. I bet they win more games than the Cubs do next year.
  23. It's weird seeing the Cubs and Red Sox turn this into the NFL and try to copycat last year's surprise successful teams. Platoons and Bullpens for everyone!
  24. Pretty much. Or Stewart reprises. I'm much more curious how they plan to fill an entire outfield.
  25. Saw something today that he had a couple of 2-year deals on the table and was holding out for three.
