  1. Probably Rays. Six years of sweet pre-FA control on Myers vs. two years of Shields. Myers has some warts, but Shields has some too pitching outside of Tampa and that defense, plus he's a pitcher and all pitchers risky bets. I don't think they'll get what they hope to get out of Wade Davis, either.
  2. Also, replacing all those games vs. the Astros with other opponents basically knocks two wins off of every NL Central team's projection.
  3. Just noticed RLYW has a very preliminary 2013 Cairo spreadsheet out. Cubs The defensive numbers are kind of wonky because they are adjusted for playing time, but even still they are oddly conservative except for Barney's. It generally hates our pitchers. They did a projected standings and had the Cubs at 71-91.
  4. It'd feel better if we'd like spread out Baker and Feldman so that one came during the Winter Meetings or something. FG's is doing a chat right now, and two of them listed the Cubs as a team who "impressed them the most" this offseason.
  5. This time last offseason, we had Ian Stewart, an underrated young starting pitcher and a McDonald's. Now it's Ian Stewart, two underrated old starting pitchers and a Japanese reliever. So, about the same? Still plenty of time for the next Rizzo.
  6. The last few days kind of make it feel like baseball GMs have an insulated little world that has a completely different set of prospect rankings than the rest of us.
  7. UZR also has less than 100 games to judge him with, half of those while he was battling leg injuries. From some searching, the consensus seems to be "mediocre range, good to very good arm" as a RF. That's all true, but I'm a tiny bit skeptical because that consensus comes from people talking about him as a prospect, and prospect defense is almost always overrated. It seems like the best case is a mediocre defensive guy with a mediocre bat and mediocre power taking up a corner outfield spot on the cheap for a couple of years, assuming he can stay healthy after a bunch of injuries. I'm not even sure I want that, let alone giving up cheap Soriano for him.
  8. Is Domonic Brown actually good defensively despite UZR hating his guts? Because I can't figure out what I'm supposed to like about him other than he teed off on AA in 2010 and is maybe healthy after a bunch of injuries.
  9. Maybe Arizona just liked Gregorius better?
  10. Castillo belongs in this category too, and Barney is pretty close unless his defensive value was more than just a blip.
  11. I'm beginning to think Injury Recovery Bingo is a real game we are playing and we want some Wrist insurance in case Stewart does get cut.
  12. There's really not much else I like on the bullpen market. Mike Adams could complete our Coming Off Of Surgery bingo card with "neck." Otherwise, I guess we'll get a guy who can compete with Beliveau to be the second lefty. Someone like Gorzelanny or JP Howell.
  13. I think they're more concerned with the near 25% minor league K rate and the hitter-friendly parks than they are his makeup. I'm not saying he's not a great prospect, but I think the Minor League POTY label might have him a tad overrated. Which doesn't make this a good trade, but it's worth noting.
  14. Garza did for one season what Shields has done for the last two, and Garza is coming off elbow injuries and not for the first time.
  15. Royals seem to be finding a few defenders out there today. Seems like there's a bit of a consensus that Myers isn't viewed as highly inside the industry as he is in the punditry.
  16. Only if Garza was a little cheaper, had an awesome 2012, and had an extra year of control. And if Wood was coming off an 11 K/9 season in the pen.
  17. Seems like a really high chance of a Cubs/Royals trade this offseason. They are "going for it" and could use some position players, and they need a trade partner that's willing to basically pick up all the salary. They supposedly like Barney and DeJesus.
  18. royalsreview.com is misery porn central. The best part was when the trade first breaks and you get some "Myers for Shields and Davis? We have to be getting more back than just those two." And then comes the news that Odorizzi and Montgomery are traded too.
  19. Classic Rays MO: Just ask for the moon in every negotiation and once in a while someone gives it to them.
  20. Wonder how the Royals will pay for it. They were supposed to be right up against their owner-imposed limit. Like this a lot for the Royals in theory without knowing the details. SP was a black hole for them, but the rest of the team is respecatable-ish. Gotta make a push at some point.
  21. It's all over the various MLB twitter guys. Jerry Crasnick ‏@jcrasnick Hearing that Shields, Davis and Myers aren't only names in trade. It's bigger than that, source said. #rays #royals
  22. Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal Source: #Rays will send James Shields and Wade Davis to #Royals for Wil Myers and other prospects.
  23. Almora. I think his ceiling's being undersold. Not having any elite tools isn't the same as not having any plus tools.
  24. If Jackson's swing change can work, he belongs in the top-4.
  25. They made the awesomenest deadline load-up in history and still missed the playoffs. That's like concentrated Nomar viagra for doom bonerism.
