And my point is "winning the group" should be about a million miles from US fans' minds and results should be considered only relative to helping the team finish at least 2nd rather than worrying about the chance of first.

Yeah, this is exactly why people saying a Ghana-Germany draw was the US's best result was wrong. They were right if there were only 4 minutes of injury time. If there were only four minutes injury time, it didn't really matter because the US was advancing no matter what, unless we're talking about Ghana beating Germany.

Interestingly, looking back, modern metrics didn't hate Neifi that much. They liked his defense quite a bit.

A US one-goal loss and a Ghana one-goal win puts them through and us out if Ghana scores at least two more goals than we do, i.e. 0-1 and 2-1.

This. I hate yo-yoing guys like that. He's finally gotten over his BB (somewhat) and injury problems because he's in the pen. All you are doing by reconverting is begging for them to return.
