  1. Putting teams in our rearview mirror right and left. If the scores hold up, there will be four teams behind us in the NL plus tied with the Mets.
  2. From the list of Things That Concern Me Wood fastball velocity (fangraphs) 2011 - 89.9 2012 - 89.4 2013 - 88.9 2014 - 88.6
  3. This is seriously the least objectionable team the Cubs have fielded in awhile.
  4. Olt is due for a run of like 3 home runs in 5 games and having that buy him two more months in the majors.
  5. Technically, Cashner had lost his prospect status at that point, which is another great indication of why farm system rankings are dumb.
  6. The circumstance would be Theo stops being such a smug prick and does something awesome for once in his whole stupid Cubs life.
  7. Anything short of an elite farm system is the equivalent of having no farm system at all.
  8. "hey guys I'm gonna prove that the Cubs had nothing even close to the average farm system, let me compare them to probably the top 2 systems in that time period for MLB production." We should have demoted Castro. Then we would have had someone as good as Trout in the farm system, which would boost the rankings.
  9. So the choices are "bare cupboard" or "as good as the 2012 Cardinals' system"?
  10. well i'm comparing them to other teams, and not to a hypothetical situation where we waived our right to make draft selections I don't think you are.
  11. If you think a starter, a top-20 prospect and a few more interesting guys is a bare cupboard, then your standards are out of whack.
  12. Overslotting lost its effectiveness as more teams started doing it, and it was always a bit overrated to begin with. By 2011, you weren't getting a whole lot of competitive advantage by blowing up your draft spending.
  13. a) Don't do that. MLB.com before Callis arrived is worse than just a random generator spitting out minor leaguers' names. b) Ignoring the 2011 draft is kinda dumb.
  14. Shields will be 33 before he pitches his first game under his new contract. Does anyone *really* think that's even an option for us?
  15. Ummm, of the Jan. 2012 top 10, one is our starting catcher; one is a beloved top-10 overall prospect in AAA right now; one can't hit but has ... nope nevermind not gonna say anything good about Junior Lake; one is still a moderately not-hated prospect at Daytona. It's not earth-shattering, but it wasn't a complete whiff either.
  16. If I'm adding it up right, he passed last year's AA rate today.
  17. Too old for the length of deals they will command. We can get both Samardzija (arbitration) and Hammel (QO) at restrained prices with no long-term commitments.
