He's better than Castillo. Not according to fWAR or rWAR and I simply don't believe the new metrics that claim that framing is good for 20 or 30 runs a year. Well then I'm just going to choose not to believe in fWAR or rWAR. -
Teach Castillo to play 1b and move Rizzo to LF.

Fangraphs has updated their WAR projections. Hammel is our second-best SP and puts us up to 8th in the NL and 5.3 behind the Rockies for fifth.

I'm not sure who I care about less. Legitimate second-round picks or guys with third-round talent who overslot in the 8th round.

Perhaps, but not to the degree some people seem to think. It's one thing to be skeptical, it's quite another to revel in the negativity like a pig in [expletive]. To what more degree could it be? We're terrible historically, have had terrible luck when we do make the playoffs, and have been terrible recently.

Missing out on Lester wouldn't be a big deal if this was still Boston Epstein, who would already have an awesome trade in place and then he'd go sign Headley and Robertson just so nobody else could have them. Chicago Epstein gets edged out on Lester, lets payroll sit at $85m and basks in the glow of "progress" after winning 79 games.

The problem is that a couple of second-tier pitchers *don't* provide as much additional value as one TOR guy. Using the current Fangraphs projected WAR, Lester (3.6) is worth more than Anderson (0.9) and McCarthy (2.2) combined, and he's only replacing one guy and not two. That's a clear 1-2 win difference in a year where 1-2 wins might be crucial.

I don't know what that means It means he's never reached 180 IP and doesn't seem likely to start now. Edit: It probably sounds like I'm complaining. I'm not. He's an upgrade. I'm just honestly surprised that's how much he would command.
