  1. Reading this article about how the new agreement affects the Rangers, it seems to be stating that teams will not lose picks for signing a Type B FA, but that the team losing the type B FA gets a sandwich pick. It looks like the only way a team gives up a pick is if the team signs a type A FA.
  2. All of the above could be true but it still does not explain taking on another all-glove-no-bat middle infielder for anohter year and a half. I'd rather they not traded Maddux or gotten a couple of AA level roster fillers. What good would that do? At least Izturis has perceived value in the baseball world The good would be that the Cubs aren't straddled with Izturis undeserved 4 million for next season.
  3. That appears to be correct. They are eliminating class C compensation, and reducing the numbers for class A and class B, but there will still be compensation for losing class A and B players.
  4. I don't think Girardi will be George's choice when he does replace Torre. While Girardi may be a favorite of Torre, I don't think he's a favorite of the boss.
  5. This is a question that would be better asked to Bruce Miles, I thought the Cubs had a choice to get someone from the Dodgers minor league system (assuming the Dodgers created a list of minor league players as well as the Cubs creating one) or getting someone who can help now and the Cubs decided to get someone who can help now. Given the Cubs current state and the possibility of getting someone from the Dodgers, I think they would've been better off exploring a prospect rather than someone like Izturis. They did explore a prospect (prospects, actually) and were told flat-out no. Bruce, can you confirm or deny any of Kaplan's other claims?
  6. It's starting to appear that no one wants to manage the Nationals, as now Terry Pendleton has pulled his name from consideration as well. Link.
  7. Here's Bruce's most recent take on the Ramirez talks.
  8. Well, could Iwamura play CF? We have a need there, and if he comes cheaply could make an all-around utility player.
  9. Fukudome would definitely be the answer to our CF problem. Too bad he's not going to be posted.
  10. While we're discussing Japanese players, any word on if Fukudome will be posted?
  11. My guess is the Cubs will still lose more picks this year than we gain.
  12. This part will be critical as well. Remember this deadline took the Astros out of the Beltran dealings. It also likely affected Alou's possible return to the Cubs.
  13. Well, no score through three.
  14. Gillick is now talking as if Burrell will not be traded. Link While he could be posturing to drive up Burrell's value, this is a change from earlier statements.
  15. Girardi withdrawls his name from consideration for the Washington job. Link.
  16. Chambliss would be an excellent choice for hitting coach.
  17. Patterson is continuing to look like he'll be a decent player. Moore's numbers are lower than what I had hoped, but his OBP is still respectable despite the low average. I'd almost consider using Moore as a player on the bench in 2007.
  18. I just wonder if the Tigers were managed by anyone other than Jim Leyland if Larussa wouldn't have raised a bigger stink? If that was Dusty in the other dugout I'm sure Larussa would have been out there in a heartbeat. I don't think someone as intense and baseball savvy as LaRussa would put friendship above winning a World Series. I just think he realized arguing would not have accomplished much (especially after Rogers hand was cleaned) and didn't want to come off as a whiner. The fact remains, Rogers pitched 7 of 8 innings with a "clean" hand. True. I just remember sitting in the box seats of that Cubs/Cards series a couple of years ago where Dusty and Larussa got into it. At one point they were yelling at each other from the dugouts. I couldn't hear everything but the eff bomb did slip a couple of times. Ah yes, the confrontation that prompted Dusty to use the infamous "wolf tickets" quote.
  19. Go Cowboys!
  20. What the hell is this supposed to even mean? What's with the Missouri hate, by the way? It was just a joke. I knew you guys would take it to the extreme. I didn't get the joke either... Apparently it wasn't a very good one.
  21. This just sets the bar for a pitcher like Maddux. Greg will be looking for 2/14 now.
  22. Who's the bigger fool, the fool or the fool who follows him?
  23. Washington plans to interview Acta. Link. Cooper, Cora, and Baker, however, appear to now be out of the running.
