  1. I also think a lack of foward thinking has been the problem as well. There were FA that were passed on because the Cubs had a short-term player already in the position. Not pursuing Tejada because of Alex Gonzalez's contract. Not finding a way to pursue Vlad because of Sosa and Alou. Not making more of a pursuit of Beltran. Those are just a few of the problems. 2003 was an exciting year for us, but I think it was also the beginning of the problems. Stop-gap solutions began because after 2003, Hendry believed this team was closer to a championship caliber team than they really were.
  2. Shea has some of the largest speakers ever created. They are extremely annoying, but not as annoying as the dude with the cowbell. Did someone ask for the dude with the cowbell? http://www.bobandaj.info/img/cowbell.gif
  3. I also don't think the Yankees need a 3b in exchange. My guess is they will be looking for pitching. They will want a number one starter or they will want a 2-3 starter with bullpen help. The Cubs could likely meet those demands. As someone else posted, they could easily make a separate trade for a 3b or sign one.
  4. Moore's numbers at this stage are Dunn-esque minus some slugging.
  5. I always held out hope for Nic. I just don't think he has a future in the majors. If he hangs around long enough, he might get a call-up when someone gets injured, but he's roster filler at this stage in his career.
  6. Or, what about Soriano in CF and Durham at 2b. Now that's a real winner!
  7. I like Lugo for SS. I think there are better options for second. I really don't want Izturis, despite the fact Kevin Kennedy swears I will love him once I see him play.
  8. Bud Black interviewed with the Giants yesterday, becoming the third candidate. The Giants have interviewed three candidates, Black, Wotus, and Piniella. Link. Of special note, it appears even amidst all the speculation, Brenly has yet to interview for the Giants job. It also looks like Bochy is on the Giants' radar.
  9. Gary Matthews' agent has informed the Rangers he will test the market before signing. The Rangers had hoped to keep Matthews, and still will try, but they won't do it during the exclusive signing period. Link What is the general consensus on Matthews? My guess is that he will get a deal too expensive and too long for his skills. Other opinions?
  10. This article details the growing list of candidates for the Nationals job. It also speculates that Girardi has an offer on the table, but he's waiting to see if he can become heir-apparent to Joe Torre after the 2007 season. Baker seems to be pining for the job as well.
  11. I finished way out of the running as well.
  12. Really? I don't think it'd be enough for the Mariners to do it. For what Ichiro brings to the table, there are better options. I'd look at Andruw Jones for one before settling on Ichiro. I'd rather take Pat Burrell off the Phillies before settling for Ichiro.
  13. Lofton wouldn't be my first choice, but he's not a horrible option either if we have Soriano at second.
  14. I think even managing Iowa is too much at this point. There's others in the organization that have earned that. My guess is Listach might get promoted to Iowa manager, and Sandberg could manage at AA or A. However, I don't think Sandberg has any interest in doing that. My guess is it's either Chicago or bust for him, and frankly if that's his decision, I'm fine if he's never more than an ambassador for the Cubs and never making decisions for them.
  15. This was a good move in my opinion. Hopefully, scouting Asia will pay off.
  16. I agree. Ryno was told by the Cubs in 2002 that if he wanted to manage, he would need to get experience. The only thing he's done to accomplish that since then is work as a guest instructor during spring training. I love Ryno. He was my favorite player for a long time, but I don't see him having the desire to put forth the effort to do what the Cubs want before they hire someone as a manager. If he wants to manage, he needs to offer to manage one of the minor league clubs, work as a roving instructor, or something like that. Furthermore, after reading Sandberg's antiquidated ideas for Yahoo sports, I really don't want him managing this team.
  17. On XM 175, Kevin Kennedy asked Jim Hendry about who the candidates were. Jim mentioned Girardi, Quade, Brenly, and Listach and then said Ryne Sandberg approached him and expressed interest. Jim said he talked with him and then told him quite frankly that they wanted "someone who had done it before."
  18. Sheets is an interesting player. He went to ULM, so I've always been a big fan. I wouldn't mind having him, but if the Cubs traded for him, they would need some insurance for when or if he's not healthy. Of course, how about the deal proposed...Marshall, Ohman, Jones for Sheets and then spin Sheets and Dempster to the Yankees for Arod?
  19. While we hear a lot of the great pitching beats great hitting mantra in the postseason, in the regular season it is possible to make the postseason with average pitching and an extremely potent line-up. Why is this true? There is more mediocre to bad pitching than there is great pitching. A powerful line-up will feast on that bad to mediocre pitching. Pitching becomes more important in the postseason. But even then, it's more important to have 1-2 great starters than it is to have a very good, deep rotation. While most of us are clamoring for a deep rotation, if the Cubs were able to get Arod for SS and improve CF with a Soriano additon, the offense might look like this: CF Soriano LF Murton SS Arod 1b Lee 3b Ramirez RF Jones C Barrett 2b Izturia/Theriot Even if the Cubs had to pay the price of Rich Hill for Arod, if they could sign one of the dominant pitching FA like Daisuke, Schmidt, or Zito they would be ok. Yes, 3/5 of the rotation would be up in question, but with that line-up the Cubs would score plenty. And even in the playoffs, the Cubs would have Zambrano + Schmidt/Daisuke/Zito as the two aces needed to win along with a potent line-up.
  20. I've heard that there is a lot of interest in Carlos from the Astros. They figure they will use the Bagwell money to sign him.
  21. Thinking in terms of Colorado, what about Helton going to the Yankees? The Cubs could send prospects to the Rockies, Helton and maybe Prior or a Cubs reliever go to the Yankees, Arod comes to the Cubs.
  22. Now that we have our manager, I'm sure interest has waned in regards to other teams' managerial search, but Ron Washington becomes the first candidate to interview with Texas. Link.
