  1. Wilson will swing at anything, won't he?
  2. Listening to Buck and McCarver is making my ears bleed.
  3. If Brenly leaves, Santo should be moved to the TV side. Seeing those Hawaiian print shirts on a daily basis....faaabulous!
  4. Interesting, the same could be said for Alou. Alou has always been known as a pretty good teammate. In fact, from all indications, he was a very positive influence on Ramirez. Where did you hear he was a positve influence on Ramirez? It was written somewhere. I don't have the link, and given the article is likely two years old, I'm not optimisitic about finding it. But (and maybe others can back me up), I am certain that I've read he was a positive influence, and some have even indicated that Ramirez has gotten more moody since Alou's leaving.

  6. I heard he was last seen mumbling about Delino being stuck in the a-hole.
  7. True, but with what team and how much will they pay? If we offer five million for a part-time role and a team such as Texas offers 3 million for a fulltime DH job, would he take more money to play less?
  8. Dubois got a shot with the Cubs, and he was moved to Cleveland where he didn't do much either. He had an OK year with Cleveland's AAA team. I think Dubois and Restovich are long lost brothers. I'm not going to defend Dubois any longer. He had his shot. His minor league numbers indicated he should have done better. On the other hand, just because we had Dubois didn't mean we should have let Alou walk. Hendry knew he was moving Sosa no matter what and he shouldn't have been left with Burnitz as his only other option.
  9. First of all, those stats are only batting averages and are incomplete. Let's look at the total productivitiy of each player vs what Alou would bring. Kapler vs LH for 2006 265/367/372 Compared to Alou 349/687/407 That's like the difference between Chase Utley and Mark Grudzielanek. Marrero vs LH 234/315/531 It still pales in comparison to Alou. Furthermore, what sets Alou apart is that if needed, he actually can perform against righties. Kapler vs RH 242/309/323 You wouldn't want him anywhere near a RH pitcher. Marrero vs RH 138/342/241 Once again, horrible. Alou vs RH 286/334/534 That's pretty good right there. So, while it is more money, Alou is a better platoon option and a better replacement regardless of who is on the mound. Alou could be the power hitting bat on the bench regardless of the handedness of the pitcher, while the above are useless unless a LH is on the mound. I'll admit, I don't know if Alou would accpet a part time role, but even if the cost is 5 million, he'd be worth the gamble.
  10. And I'm not sure how much of a shot Dubois actually received. But regardless, yes I wanted Dubois to get a shot, but like Goony, I didn't want Burnitz. Had I known Sosa was going to be traded for nothing, I'd have preferred to keep Alou in left and let Dubois/Hollandsworth attempt in right. At least in that scenario we would have had only two thirds of the OF sucking rather than the whole shebang! (And yes, I've been waiting all day to use the phrase "whole shebang".)
  11. That's too bad. Brenly is a pretty bad partner for someone like Kasper. I prefer Brenly to all of the options above. Of course a drunken Rick Sutcliffe might be nice.
  12. What? Neifi and Rusch money? The difference is the guy would produce. Add his $5m to Jones's $5m, platoon them, and you are getting the produciton of a $15m+ individual player. Thank-you! Furthermore, when Alou isn't starting there's a great threat of a pinch hitter, something we haven't had in recent years.
  13. Just think, Tim. If you had the blogs up and running this might have been the subject of my blog for today. :P
  14. Essientially, yes 4-5 million is a lot for a platoon guy. But Jones makes 5 million and if Alou signed for 5 million, then 10 million is alotted for RF. You'd find it hard to get a slugger at 10 million who would give you the combined production of Alou + Jones. Don't look at it as paying 5 million for a platoon player, but instead paying 10 million for all-star level production from RF.
  15. A poor college student can probably scrum up the money for a fee, but I won't object if I can donate my Google-ad revenues to the site in lieu of one. This would be the more likely scenario based on how the conversation has flowed. Tim, Would it be possible to make having a blog a benefit of premium users with those individuals keeping their google ad share, while non-premium users could have a blog as well, but google ad share would go to the site?
  16. As a platoon or part-time player, I think Alou would prove durable. Furthermore, the 250 point difference in OPS makes Alou a better gamble than Payton.
  17. I mentioned that clause in the thread about the agreement, and yes, I feel it is significant. The Astros have been burned by this rule more than once. It made them wait on Clemens last season, but it also created a deadline when they were negotiating with Beltran as well. It's a rule that might have impacted the Cubs negotiations with Alou a few years back. When it was instituted, it had a good purpose, but it wasn't good for clubs or players any longer. On the player side, while it may have helped them by giving their current team a deadline, it also served to remove teams from the bidding process. On the team side, they might not offer arbitration because they didn't want to risk having a player accept, but they might want to continue to negotiate with that player. I think this will be a very significant change in the CBA.
  18. It appears that Bochy may be the top choice in San Francisco and the Padres have given the Giants a seven-day window to work out a deal. Link. It also appears that the Padres will not ask for compensation if the Giants want to hire Bochy.
  19. I don't know, but he turns 41 next season. Unless he's a DH somewhere, I don't see him being a productive, healthy player playing everyday in the field. He may realize that too. While it is a small sample size, check out Alou's PH splits for 2006. Amazing!
  20. According to the NY Daily News, the recently agreed-upon CBA includes a 12-million dollar pay-out to the union for damages resulting from collusion by the owners during 2002. Link. Interesting.... :-k
  21. That is my intent. Kind of like how the articles have a link to a thread down at the bottom. I might go one step further and display the messages in the thread at the bottom of the blog post, though. I'll have to think about the best way that can be done. Cool. If deemed worthy, I'll do a blog.
  22. Are the blogs going to be linked to the message boards so that people can discuss what the bloggers are writing about?
  23. Why? Alou is more productive against both lefties and righties than Payton has been. Payton's OPS in 2006 vs LH- 817 Alou's OPS in 2006 vs LH- 1094 This is true for their entire careers. Alou is a more productive hitter. Payton might be a nice plan C or D or M-Z, but he shouldn't come before a pursuit of Alou.
