  1. The article also mentions Braves thirdbase coach Fredi Gonzalez who is someone I'd like to see the Cubs consider if and when Baker is replaced.
  2. Yes, hopefully Murton is in there tonight. Is it just me, or would anyone else like to see Grieve get a start every now and then against a right hander?
  3. I don't think it is any secret that Alou wanted to come back. It's also no secret that his feelings were hurt that the Cubs didn't make any effort to contact him about keeping him around. I also don't think there's any doubt we've missed not having him in left field.
  4. I'm inclined to say no to Pierre. If he could be acquired for a player like Wellemeyer(which we could not), I might get him and platoon him with Hairston. His value is way overrated.
  5. Sox will be in the play-offs, but will lose in the first round. You can take that prediction to the bank.
  6. I'll be at Tueday's Brewers-Cards game wearing a Cubs hat and cheering the Brew Crew. I may go on Wednesday as well since Sheets will be pitching.
  7. This is one of the toughest teams to figure out. We just way too damn streaky. During our winning streaks, it is so easy to think we have everything we need. We've also had two seven game losing streaks which make me believe there isn't even one move that would significantly help. If we can play consistently like the team that's playing right now, sure we can get the WC without any significant moves...especially if Nomar will be back in August. On the other hand, I have little confidence that we can continue to do that.
  8. I've gotta be honest. No offense, but I can't believe some of the things some of us are finding as important. He doesn't have enough sac flies? Well, Aramis Ramirez has none so far this year. Does that scare us to death? On a Reds radio braodcast, Marty Brenneman mentioned that stat, but said someone in the Reds organization did some research and found that Dunn had 9 homers in those at bats, which is actually as good as 18 sac flies. I'm guessing that would pretty much lead the league. If you don't want Adam Dunn because his power and patience hinders him from making "productive outs" then I think you are outsmarting yourself. This needs to be posted every time Dunn's name is brought up. Well said. Very well said, although the 9 homers is really way better than 18 sac flies since they generally dont result in outs. Excellent point!
  9. With Hairston playing decent CF and hitting lead-off, I'm not seeing a need for Winn. He falls into the same category as Matt Lawton. When Corey was in the line-up everyday, I was a big proponent of trading for Lawton to play left. But now, if we upgrade in left, I'd want someone with a little more power.
  10. Why would Dunn be someone we couldn't keep beyond this year? He's not eligible for free agency until after the 2007 season. I think it's pretty ridiculous to think that we couldn't keep Dunn at least that long.
  11. There's no way that happens. In fact, I think Lee and Ramirez would enjoy the friendly competition for those titles.
  12. How can this be explained? How old was he when he came to St Louis? And did he move up in the order? Putting him in front of McGwire is similar to hitting in front of Bonds. He's going to see more pitches to hit. As for his improved durability, any ideas? Support hose and a sports bra?
  13. that's a good score! get anything else? Vance got an Iowa team signed bat. I also bought a ceremonial first pitch and my friend bought lunch with Ribbee. lunch w/ the mascot sounds brutally awkward. It's all the more awkward when the mascot can't talk. He could discuss the techniques of his blitz.
  14. No but I did hear he almost never signed autographs as a Cub, so its kinda weird. That's just not true. I have Patterson on every team ball 03-05...I have a couple of signed cards, a signed picture, a signed mini helmet, and a signed baseball. That in itself disputes the fact that he "almost" never signed autographs.
  15. That's a beautiful jersey. Has the smell subsided?
  16. If Philly trades Wagner, they'd surely take minor league talent because they would be sellers. If Philly decides to sell, I see if Wagner comes cheaper if we take on Burrell's contract.
  17. The Nationals may hang around, but not with the RS/RA differiential that they currently have. If that remains as it is, they will finish the year as a .500 team.
  18. That was [chris farley voice] AWESOME. [/chris farley voice]
  19. Fergie's number isn't retired, and it probably should have been. Personally, I think two factors kept it from happening. First, he didn't play his entire career with the Cubs. Secondly, and likely most importantly, around the time Fergie retired he was busted for drugs at the Canadian border. I'm sure that reason caused the Cubs to want to separate themselves from him for awhile. Now that Maddux has worn the number and Fergie has rehabilitated his image, I'm certain that there will be a dual retirement of the number after Maddux retires.
  20. I'm looking forward to Shurholtz's book that is due out next spring.
  21. Just because I feel that way does not mean Walt agrees with me. He rarely listens to me. As someone else mentioned, I highly doubt he goes to an NL Central team. It's just as likely that he'll go to an NL Central team as anywhere. You can read my comments in the thread in transactions. The Astros already turned down one deal. Dunn is available to a NL Central team, but it will be very costly.
  22. Just arrived at the in-laws in Edwardsville. I'm glad to see the Cubs won since I'll be stuck in Cardinal country for the next week. Of course I'll be at all three Cub-Cardinal games so that's a plus!
