  1. I think there are a number of scenarios where Patterson could be passable in CF for 2006 and yours is one of them. In fact, even without getting Castillo...simply adding Furcal and Giles and keeping Walker also strenghtens the line-up enough to keep Patterson around. Keep in mind, that just replacing Giles's numbers for 2005 with Burnitz's numbers for 2005 we would have vaulted to 5th in team OBP and that is with the drag that players such as Neifi and Patterson, etc put on the line-up. Giles alone makes a huge impact. Furcal for a season would help as well. So, just adding those two, with or without Castillo, gives the Cubs the option of trying to let Patterson play out of his funk.
  2. I didn't have a problem with the article. It gave a balanced view of both sides of the issue and raised a significant question with support about whether the Cubs should pursue Furcal in light of his problem with alcohol.
  3. Hopefully we sign Furcal and Giles and will only need to trade Walker either for a pitcher or a Cfer.
  4. Personally, I'd prefer to keep Walker at 2b and let Cedeno be my back-up infielder for a season and then move Ronny into the starting role in 2007. On the other hand, if the Cubs are determined to trade Walker, there are some interesting possibilites. I'd look to use him in a deal to get Bradley away from the Dodgers if possible. The Dodgers could then move Kent to firstbase. I'd also look into sending Walker with some other players to the Diamondbacks for Tracy or Quentin.
  5. More about the Mets' pursuit of Jojima in today's papers.
  6. On the "The Show" with Kennedy and Dibble yesterday there was a lot of talk of Furcal going to the Cubs. It was very reminiceint of all the Pudge to the Cubs talk of a few offseasons ago. I wonder if it will have the same result... :-k
  7. Of course you'd have way more reason to be sad about Wrigley. Busch isn't exactly the baseball mecca that Wrigley is. Busch isn't as old, but probably holds more memories than Wrigley does. Do you just look to start arguments, or do you actually believe the stuff you type.... Awww c'mon. The "best fans in baseball" would never look to start an argument.
  8. Of course you'd have way more reason to be sad about Wrigley. Busch isn't exactly the baseball mecca that Wrigley is. Busch isn't as old, but probably holds more memories than Wrigley does. Please explain. He likely doesn't have an explanation. It's just more drivel from one of the "best fans in baseball."
  9. True, it's not absolute like ops. But it can be backed up w/ various observations... Jeter, Bernie and Paul O'Neill were "great clubhouse guys," the Red Sox have a fun clubhouse," etc., etc., etc.... Thus an opinion can be supported to some extent. If you want to give it a value, perhaps 5-10% of winning a title is based on "chemistry." Sometimes talent and luck can override this though. See the 72-74 A's for more.. The problem with saying chemistry is the cause of winning rather than the result is that certain players are at one time, while their team is winning viewed as great guys and then suddenly they aren't when the team struggles. Case in point: Manny Ramirez. He's part of the Red Sox who had such "great chemistry" in 2004, yet is seen as a cancer now. AJ was seen as a cancer in S.F., yet he's such a great guy in the White Sox clubhouse now. What about crazy Carl? Did these guys suddenly become model citezens, or is it just easier to get along when you're winning? I think it's more of the later than the former.
  10. Once again, no one can answer with precision whether the teams had good chemistry because they won or won because of good chemistry. Are losing teams bad because they don't have chemistry? No, ususally they are bad because they lack talent. And just because you find a bunch of players that really like each other doesn't mean you'll put a winner on the field. Secondly, I find it entirely impossible to build a team for "chemistry." Just because someone was well-liked by one group of people doesn't mean he will similarly be well-liked by another. You build teams according to talent and hope the chemistry is there. Teams can win on talent without chemistry. I doubt you'll see many win on chemistry alone.
  11. I don't think there should be any doubt that Furcal is prime target number one. I'd prefer that target be Giles, but I expect to see the full court press to sign Furcal begin the day FA can begin negotiating financial terms with other teams.
  12. If there's any validity to it, it's not a bad move. I'm not sold on Pierre at all, but we're really not giving up much. I like Sergio as much as anyone around here, but he's out of options so he needs to be traded. He won't clear waivers, and when looking at the current personell in the bullpen and rotation, I don't see where he fits into the Cubs 2006 plans. Patterson also is likely to be moved after his dismal season. Pierre will fill the gap in CF, although costly, and gives us the prototypical lead-off hitter Dusty desires. It's not a great move, but it likely doesn't make us a worse team either.
  13. I would say that's a little excessive. I agree. That's why it's doubtful I'd trade him. If the Phillies would give up that deal, I'd take it.
  14. I have a response...but nah....it's not worth it.
  15. If I give up Zambrano, I'd want the Phillies to send Abreu, Padilla, Floyd, and Michaels and pick up some of Abreu's money.
  16. I would not trade Zambrano for Abreu, at least not unless Philly eats some salary and throws in a prospect. Abreu is productive, but he's paid comensurate with his production. Zambrano is still a value for his production. I'm also not certain this team is better after that trade.
  17. The Mets have some interest in Dotel. The article goes on to say Dotel has begun tossing from 60 feet and expects to be ready by Spring Training. I still hope the Cubs look into him. He'd give us a formidable back-end of the bullpen.
  18. That may be true, but we would be a better team with him on it.
  19. Yes, I might would trade Lee, but I'd be unlikely to net a return large enough to make me want to pull the trigger on a deal. We're not rebuilding, so I'd have to get some major players back to even think about it.
  20. I'm pretty certain Texas hasn't ever moved the fences.
  21. I think it will take a whole lot more than that. I'd think more along the lines of J. Williams, Pie, Hill, and likely one other prospect at least. I'm not sure if I pay it or not, but if I could get Ichiro without giving up Pie, I'd strongly consider it.
  22. Sheffield: 2005- 291/379/512 2002-2004: 304/397/550 Burnitz: 2005- 258/322/435 2002-2004: 261/327/492 uhmmmm....Sheffield please. (I guess I should be careful. The last time I compared a player to Burnitz's suckitude, they wished for me to die.) While you're at it, why not add Joey Belle to your list too, he really could put up the numbers! Sheffield's problems are not anywhere near what Belle's have been. Sheffield's issues must not be much of a detriment to winning teams either. The Yankees have been to the playoffs with him as have the Braves. He also went to a World Series with the Marlins. So either, he isn't the problem everyone makes him out to be or chemistry is overrated. Roll your eyes all you want, but if you really think Sheffield hurts his team, you haven't looked at the standings the past three years.
  23. Don't put much stock in these. Last year, the pre-season ranking had the Astros below twenty. We saw how that played out.
  24. If you read his quotes, Lawton claims he did not appeal his suspension. This rumor obviously involves someone in the appeals process. There could still be another one forthcoming.
