  1. I think he's envisioning Bell + Thome to Seattle for Beltre. The Phillies might have to toss a prospect into that to make it work though.
  2. Encarnacion hit 287/349/447 in 2005 to go with 265/320/434 over the three years from 2002-2004. He may put up the 2005 numbers, but if he regresses to the other line, we will be lacking production in right field. Giles hit 301/423/483 in 2005 to go with a 2002-2004 line of 294/407/489. Giles numbers for 2005 are right in line with his previous three years. For Giles even to hit Encarnacion's high water mark, he'd have to regress 15 points in average, nearly 75 points in OBP, and 50 points in slugging. I don't see why we should be "saving" money. Where else would we spend this money? We have the money available this offseason. We need to improve the team as much as possible. Giles does this. Encarnacion does not. I guess if we save money and sign Encarncion it will help us fans save money as well since we won't be buying any playoff tickets... :-k
  3. The difference is that the upgrade from what we have in CF to Bradley would be much greater than the upgrade from Walker to Kent. Based on that alone, it would be better to get Bradley than Kent. And just as people want to criticize Walker's defense, Kent is just as poor defensively.
  4. Did they win because they got along well, or did they get along well because they were winning?
  5. Sammy returns to Texas for 2.5 million plus incentives.
  6. The more I think about it, the more this move signals that Mitre will be traded before Opening Day. He's out of options and would have to be kept on the 25-man roster all year next season or exposed to waivers. I'm certain that he doesn't have oodles of value, but someone would claim him off of waivers for certain. Right now, you have a rotation of: Wood, Prior, Zambrano, Maddux and let's pencil in Rusch. Even if you play with a seven man pen (Kentdammit), you have Dempster, Williamson, Novoa, Wuertz, and Ohman ahead of Mitre there. There's two spaces in the pen that could go to Williams, Wellemeyer, Leicester, Hill or Mitre. Mitre has been the least effective out of the pen. Also, while I'm aware that Mitre is out of options. Am I correct that Welly and Leicester are out of options as well? Also, does anyone know what the option situation with Williams is? I believe he has one more.
  7. How about this deal: Cubs get: Castillo, Bradley, Drew, and Lowe. Dodgers get: Lowell, Pierre and 2 million from the Cubs. Marlins get: Walker, Nolasco, Patterson and another prospect from the Cubs. Cubs line-up: Castillo 2b Bradley CF Lee 1b Drew RF Ramirez 3b Murton LF Cedeno SS Barrett C Rotation: Zambrano Prior Wood Maddux Lowe That's not too shabby.
  8. =P~ Walker 2b Murton LF Lee 1b Giles RF Ramirez 3b Drew CF Cedeno SS Barrett C Wow..wow...wow...wow.
  9. But only if they ate a large portion of his contract. I don't see why they would need to eat a "large" portion, or any portion for that matter. He has 3 years at 10 million a year left. That isn't burdensome by any means. He can play RF, LF, or CF so he gives us the option at looking at multiple ways to build the team. I think it is more likely the Dodgers will look to deal Bradley, but if the cost in players wasn't prohibitive, I'd take on Drew and the entire contract. FYI, it's 4 years at 11 million per left. I'd love Drew or Bradley. What's an extra million between friends?
  10. According to this article, the Mets, Mariners, and Padres are interested in Jojima.

  12. I'd be willing to gamble on Drew if the Dodgers made him available.
  13. You may not like Stoney's attitude, but the man knows baseball and he's never been afraid to voice his views. Brenly is nothing more than a lapdog and Kaspar is just average at best. Whether Stoney would ever be given an opportunity to be a GM or front office decision maker is open for debate. Teams don't often take chances on out-spoken announcers and GM-types. They want house men who spew the party line and do what they are told. Harry Caray may have been the last of the great announcers in that regard. Teams are more concerned about the image of the team, rather than have an announcer actually tell you what's going on. They didn't learn that Harry sold more Cubs tickets than any marketing campaign could by telling the truth and not sugar coating it. When I see Hendry start '06 by bringing back the entire coaching staff, Walker, Wood(on the team at all), Dempster as a starter, CPatt, etc.. makes me want someone else in charge. Whether that's Stoney or Theo Epstein or even Tim, at least they would speak their mind and not stand pat. Pure heresy! I was lukewarm when Kasper was hired, but he's proven that he is an excellent play-by-play guy. As he grows into the job, I think all in all, we will be very pleased with this hire. He was their 4th choice, not a ringing endorsement for the Cubs-probably one of the Top 3 broadcast jobs in the country. He's too vanilla for my tastes. He may have been the fourth choice, but he's done an excellent job. His ability to subtly work some of the new approaches to looking at the game into his broadcast put him on the cutting edge. He calls a good crisp game. I think within a couple of years, Len will be regarded as one of the best in the game.
  14. Teams are allowed to express interest and ask if there is mutual interest. They are not allowed to discuss financial terms or negotiate a contract until the exclusive window passes.

  16. I wouldn't be upset at signing Burnett, but I don't think he should be a top priority. If healthy, we have a top pitching staff. Also, since health is the primary concern, the last move to insure against it is to sign a pitcher with health issues himself. If we're going to sign another starter, I'd prefer to sign one that has avoided most health related issues.
  17. I'm not a big fan of Pierre, but lots depends on what goes with each one. Furcal is a better player, but if having Furcal means Patterson or Preston Wilson in Cf, but having Pierre means having Nomar at SS, I think I'd take Pierre/Nomar over Furcal/Patterson. But just on evaluation of the two players, Furcal.
  18. I took my daughter to a few houses and, then it started raining.
  19. Maybe go after a CF (Bradley/Cameron) with those extra starting arms we have, but I agree.. LF - Murton CF - Patterson (Bradley? ) RF - Giles 1B - Lee 2B - Walker SS - Furcal 3B - ARam C - Barrett To me, that lineup looks good enough to compete for the division. Amazing how much of a difference 2 signings would make. I think with Giles and Furcal, we could afford to let Patterson try one more time in CF. The line-up could be: Furcal SS Walker 2b Lee 1b Giles RF Ramirez 3b Patterson CF Murton LF Barrett C I think that line-up could conceivably be a top 3-4 offense.
  20. Vance, what's Addison dressing up as for Halloween? She was Tigger. We only went to about six houses before it started raining and then came home.
  21. I'm not sure about Griffey. How many years does he have left on that deal?
  22. While I don't put much stock in Gammons's predictions, it is nice to have someone of national significance mention the Cubs in regard to Giles. Up until now, I wasn't even sure Hendry knew he existed. If we signed both Giles and Furcal, I think we could call it an offseason.
  23. hahahaha it's been a rough week for Vance. Nothing I can't handle.
