  1. I'm being completely serious, but if the season started today with each team in the NL Central having the exact players they have now, the Brewers should be the favorites.
  2. Trading Ramirez for Tejada is something I'd consider, but there's now way I'd trade Ramirez + all those guys for Tejada. That's reidiculous. Tejada isn't that much better a player than Ramirez to warrant throwing in Williams and Dopirak. If the Orioles want Ramirez, it would have to be Ramirez straight up for Tejada. If not, no deal. If I did the first trade, I would probably consider the second. A better deal however might be to trade Patterson and a pitching prospect for Troy Glaus. Or...maybe expand the deal to include Glaus and Vasquez.
  3. When Prior was drafted, he signed a major league contract that guaranteed him that kind of money. Had he sucked and never made it, he still would be making that this year. He forfieted many of his arbitration years for the security of a guaranteed deal. Players like Zambrano didn't do that.
  4. I don't follow the Cubs minor leaguers closely, but I was never too enamored with Hill or Choi. I will admit I was very enamored with Choi, not so much with Hill.
  5. And that was? Or is it unprintable here? "Mr. [censored] swing at everything!"
  6. Vance, I disagree. I don't believe Hendry will include him. We can discuss whether that's a mistake, but I don't think Pie will be part of any Cubs offer. I don't think he'd be part of the offer Jim makes, but I do think that Baltimore is going to keep countering with him. I think a lot depends on how special a player Hendry believes Tejada can be for the Cubs. I also think that whether Pie is in the deal will greatly depend on a.) does Hendry think he can retain Pierre after 2006. b.) what other players Baltimore is insisting on.
  7. We can't sign Nomar until May 1st. He'll have a job by then, so that is no longer an option. Had it been one, I would have to really think about that deal. I don't think I trade Aramis for Miggy. Ramirez is younger and provides more offensive punch than Tejada does. There also aren't any thirdbasemen available that equal things out. Now if a package were created that included Ramirez for Miggy with other players involved, I might have to look at the deal to reconsider, but Ramirez for Tejada as one for one, I'd pass.
  8. Baltimore could see it as a chance to re-tool. It just depends on how they view the situation. With the pitching staff they have, they aren't going to contend in the AL East. They'll be at best, fourth place, and could finish behind the Devil Rays. Also, the Devil Rays have some of the best talent coming up in the next few years and if the Orioles aren't careful, they could end up a last place team for years to come. If they decide to take a step back and get a bushel of minor league talent, they will help themselves down the road. They will also free themselves of some salary they can use next year to lure more talent there. Personally, I see it as a long shot, but I have no idea what is or is not being discussed among the Oriole front office people.
  9. I have a feeling Pie will be involved in any deal we make for Tejada. To give up a player of his caliber, they will won't the gem of our minor league system. I think if the Orioles decide to go prospects for him,it will be a four player package going to the Orioles. The package will begin with Pie and they'll likely want Cedeno unless they believe they can fill the need signing Alex Gonzalez. My guess is they'd ask for Pie, Cedeno, and then likely one pitcher. Would they prefer the major-league ready Jerome Williams, the injury-prone, high ceiling Angel Guzman, or the lefty Rich Hill? I'd also see them asking for one of Dopirak or Harvey. I'm pretty sure at that point, Hendry will try to get the deal done without giving away that many of our top players, but I'm guessing that's where it would start.
  10. Reading all of these discussions, I can't help but think of the nickname Billy Beane had for Tejada that was quoted in Moneyball.
  11. With this as the current line-up: CF Pierre 2b Walker 1b Lee 3b Ramirez RF TBD C Barrett LF Murton SS Cedeno I'd have the bench as: 1b/3b/of Mabry 2b/cf/lf Hairston C Blanco 2b/ss Perez I'd look to add Rondell White as a bench bat who would do well as a spot starter. I might give a look to Richard Hidalgo, and D'Angelo Jimenez. If Walker is moved for a RF bat, then I'd definitely look at Jimenez or put either Fontenot or the riot on the bench.
  12. The Cubs can't resign Burnitz until May 1st. So, we play Mabry in rightfield until then? I just don't see that as a likly nor justifiable option.
  13. One thing to consider when trading for Tejada is he would have the right to demand a trade after the 2006 season. Given the way salaries have risen, he may see the chance to become a free agent again promising and make that demand. So, when giving up so much to get him, you run the liklihood of having to shop him next offseason.
  14. I'd rather have Juan Encarnacion than Jones, and I don't want Encarnacion. I still find it hard to believe that Seattle wouldn't deal Ibanez.
  15. I think that's a very REALISTic assessment.
  16. I don't think we can rule out the fact that Jerome Williams might be in Iowa's rotation.
  17. If you want Vidro, now is not the time to trade for him. Wait until spring training to see if he returns healthy and wait until Sori is sulking and they have no place to play them both. He'll be less of risk, and he'll likely come cheaper.
  18. According to the papers in Tampa, a Marte for Lugo trade was never offered. The article goes on to suggest that Renteria was always the target for the Braves and that Lugo and the Devil Rays were brought into the discussion because Boston needed a shortstop. In the end, the article suggests, the Red Sox decided to keep Marte and cut the Rays out of the deal. This could also mean that Lugo is still in play and may not be as costly as we previously thought. I'd still hope the Cubs would move on a rightfielder first, but apparently Lugo is still available and at a lower cost than once believed.
  19. After reading the Sun Times article, I'm really surprised that Ibanez isn't available. I'd have guessed Seattle would at least listen to offers for him.
  20. Yes, he's said he only wants to go to Seattle, Anaheim, Cleveland or Arizona. Those are the places supposedly he wants to go. Right now, I think Manny (and his agent) are trying to force Boston's hand. Manny has 10-5 rights, so he can reject any trade. He also has threatened to sit out if the Red Sox don't trade him to someplace he wants to go. That being said, those four teams aren't interested in picking up Manny's contract and sending decent talent back to Boston. Boston won't move him unless they get an excellent return on him. While Manny may believe he can call the shots, Boston may force him to reconsider. They could work out deals to places he says he doesn't want to go and then let him decide how badly he really wants out...or they could just not trade him and see if he'll really walk away from 20+ million as well as forfeit part of his signing bonus.
  21. They didn't offer Sanders arbitration, so he's no longer an option for them. Let me just say, I love this move for the Cardinals. Absolutely love it!
  22. Mets? They could move Reyes to 2B (again). As I prefaced my comments, the list isn't comprehensive.
  23. Nice breakdown of the numbers. On the other hand, the Cubs are still 16-20 million under budget for 2005, and maybe more if Walker is moved. The Cubs could absorb Tejada's 12 million and still go out and sign Juan Encarnacion for RF. While Encarnacion isn't a great option, he would be adequate if Tejada were our SS.
