So when he's not batting leadoff and not in a big ballpark, he'll get homeruns? But he's only batted 29 times out of leadoff in four years. Plus, his homerun totals over the last four years are, 11, 32, 19, 20. That doesn't speak 30 homeruns a year to me. His OBP% is good. But we already have a leadoff man. Where would you bat him in the lineup? 2nd? That would be some awesome OBP in the top of the lineup, but do you think that leaves enough pop in the middle? Ideally, I'd like a little more pop out of RF. But let's face the facts, who available gives you that? Mench is about the only one there that I think is definitive 30 HR power and his other numbers leave something to be desired. Depending on the rest of the make-up of the team, I'd hit Wilkerson either 2nd, 5th or 6th. I think he has enough power to handle those positions and his OBP is very good. I might be really creative and sandwich him between Lee and Ramirez. While he lacks the power of a typical number four hitter, it would create a R-L-R arrangement and utilize his OBP ahead of Ramirez.

Well, let's assume that Pierre eats up 6 million of the 22 available, we still have 16 million. If we trade Walker, that adds 2.5 more. We definitely have the cash to get into the Millwood bidding; personally, I'd prefer going after Weaver.

I agree on Soriano. I just fear that Baker would bat him 2nd where he would hurt more than help. I'd rather have Walker than Soriano. But, if the Cubs did trade for Soriano, would you rather have Soriano or Neifi batting 2nd? I think I'd prefer Soriano. Remembering that Dusty is the manager, it would probably be one of those two rather than Murton. What about Barrett hitting second?

Haha, I don't think I'll ever forget chanting that that night. What a great game. I feel compeled to add that while Vance and Mizzou were busy hurling mean-spirited and hurtful insults at Mr. Pierre, I was notably absent; having retreated to the back row of the bleachers to indulge my tobacco addiction. :angel: Now, if anybody would be interesting in purchasing some land for development in South Florida, just PM me. If you remember our discussion that night, Fred...it looks like we now have the "one-trick pony."

I'll try to explain the value in Wilkerson for the umpteenth time. First of all, his batting average is irrelevant to me. He has an uncanny knack for taking a walk and getting on base. His OBP is consistently 100 points higher than his average, so even when his average dips, he still can help you by not making outs. Secondly, when not injured and playing in caverous ballpark, Wilkerson has 30 HR power. Citing his RBI's is foolish. First he's spend many AB's in the lead-off spot. I guess it's his fault the number eight hitter and the pitcher weren't on base ahead of him. Secondly, RBI is probably the most asinine way to value you a hitter in the first place. Finally, I'm sure playing on some weak Montreal teams had a lot to do with his RBI chances. Wilkerson would be a nice option. Is he the best? I don't know. A lot depends on how healthy that shoulder is.

Here's my rundown on possible costs. (Keep in mind this is just estimation.) A- Probably Todd Walker. Player makes 5 million in 2006. B- Cheapest of the group. Probably a mid range prospect or pair of prospects. Player is arbitration eligible. C- Corey Patterson and possibly a minor league pitcher. Player makes around 10 million. (I'm too lazy to look it up.) D- Jerome Williams and maybe more. Player is arbitration eligible. E- Jerome Williams and more. Player is arbitration eligible. F- Jerome Williams, Corey Patterson + prospect(s). Player is arbitration eligible. G- Only your money. Player is a free agent.

We've all assumed based on what has been said, and in some cases not said, that Walker's days with the team are numbered. So far, nothing with Walker has developed. So, if Hendry is unable to get a decent return on Walker, what will he do with him? Will he sell him off to the highest bidder even if no one offers decent players in return? If Walker is on the team, will he start? Will he be a platoon player? I guess we could still see a Walker for Mench deal if the Rangers trade Soriano, but I'm starting to wonder what possibilities for moving Walker for value exist. Thoughts? (Also, Bruce, if you're reading this...are you still certain the Cubs want to move Walker if we don't get another SS?)

I like Wood. I really do. But assuming the offer was on the table and Wood would waive the NTC, I'd make this trade. In fact, I might even kick back a low level prospect to make it happen...though I'd probably try to get Philly to send Padilla to us in return.

At least that might make Neifi somewhat useful...even though I abhor the sacrifice bunt in most circumstances.

Juan, if you're reading this, I really don't think all those things about your mother...and I really don't thing you and Miggy actually do those things we suggested. :oops:

Sorry. You're right, Huff should've been on the list, but compiling it while trying to coral a class of 8th graders, errors were bound to be made.

I tried to pick players we have a realistic shot of getting. From all reports I've heard, the Cubs aren't a match for Mr. Abreu. For the same reason, Adam Dunn isn't on the list.

Ok, now that we have Pierre in center, it's time to choose a rightfielder. I've compiled a list of 7 potential candidates that I believe are realistic options. It's not comprehensive, but lets see which you choose. Numbers are AVG/OBP/SLG Ages are ages for 2005 season. Player A- 2005: 280/355/436 Bats: Left Career: 283/341/460 Age: 33 Player B- 2005: 290/350/484 Bats: Both Career: 269/358/426 Age: 27 Player C- 2005: 286/355/477 Bats: Left Career: 283/356/505 Age: 32 Player D- 2005: 264/328/469 Bats: Right Career: 272/334/484 Age: 27 Player E- 2005: 240/333/452 Bats: Right Career: 266/360/461 Age: 25 Player F- 2005: 248/351/405 Bats: left Career: 256/365/452 Age: 28 Player G- 2005: 287/349/447 Bats: Right Career: 268/316/440 Age: 29

It does make the deal better, but I would have preferred it to say that either Nolassco or Pinto were not a part of the deal.

If the Yankees are truly interested in Nomar, I think the best course of action would be to shift Jeter to CF, put Arod at SS, and install Nomar at 3b. I think Jeter has the range to play CF, it would put the game's best SS at SS, and Nomar should be able to play an adequate thirdbase.

I'm not sure I want Bradley now. I want a 30 HR 280/350 guy in right and I'm not sure Bradley fits that bill. Are any of those guys available? Here are the three guys I think the Cubs could be able to get. Through trade: 1. Kevin Mench 2. Austin Kearns 3. Milton Bradley 4. Brad Wilkerson 5. Aubrey Huff Through free agency: 1. Juan Encarnacion 2. Jaque Jones 3. Preston Wilson Wilkerson could put up those numbers, but I think he'd come short in BA. If he recovers from injuries, he has 30 HR power. Mench can provide the power, but his average is likely going to be in the 265-270 range with a 330-340 OBP. Bradley will give you the average and OBP, but will come up short in the power department. Huff would likely give you the power, but I'm a little concerned about him. Kearns could be the complete package, but he's less proven than the others. None of the free agents impress me.

Soriano to the Dodgers?

So, basically the Dodgers are about to acquire both of the middle infielders that Inside the Ivy said were heading to the Cubs in his infamous scoop article. Sweet! Maybe he talked to a source in the wrong organization. -
With the acquisition for Pierre, maybe Dusty was there to guage whether Bradley would be opposed to playing rightfield.

Do I think we overpaid? absolutely. Giving up Mitre isn't a problem, but tossing in both Nolassco and Pinto is overpaying some considering Pierre is a one-year rental. Will Pierre make us a better team next year? I guess it depends on the next move. I really doubt we see a huge bat, ala Dunn coming this way now. We just don't have the guns left to pull a trigger on such a deal unless Hendry signs Pierre to an extension and then trades Pie plus other players in deal for Dunn. I'll try to breakdown the trade like this: Positives: 1. The Cubs acquire a CF and lead-off man that has had success in the role. 2. Pierre will be a significant upgrade over what we had in the position last season. 3. We made the trade without giving up Jerome Williams or Rich Hill or Todd Walker. Negatives: 1. Patterson is still here. 2. Pinto and Nolassco were two valuable trading chips as well as guys who could've helped the Cubs in the future. Losing both in the same deal along with Mitre is pretty steep. 3. Pierre is a rental player. I think the positives outweigh the negatives. We still need to acquire a bat for RF. I'm hoping for Wilkerson in a deal involving Patterson, but Bradley would be ok. Signing Encarnacion may be an option as well.

I might take a flyer on him, but it would have to be a more complex deal that would land the Cubs more than Renteria.

Am I happy about giving up Pinto and Nolassco for Pierre? Meh. It beats another season of Corey Patterson, but I'd much prefer Wilkerson and Bradley. I don't know if those guys are available, but they would be my prime targets over Pierre. On the other hand, if we do have to pay this price for Pierre, we still have Walker on the team. Since we've already addressed the bullpen, what would we trade Walker for or would we trade Walker? I think there's still a lot of moves to make.

Let's make a rule that to stop citing the Score. This radio station doesn't seem to ever report accurate information. Might as well cite a poster on an ESPN board or something. I've seen nothing from Hendry indicting interest in Preston Wilson. If we don't cite the Score, CubbieRich might feel slighted.
