  1. really? where is that coming from? At least the second part of that goes against what pretty much every source has agreed on so far... I am not saying that another acceptable club will step in and offer more, but right now a # 1 starting pitcher is on the market and, in Tower's mind, teams are offering spare parts. The pads want more than that and are chatting with other clubs. Will they get it? Time will tell. If the Pads were happy with what was being offered, the deal would be done. But what about all the reports that Peavy had a very limited number of clubs that he would wave his NTC for?????? It is limited, but not to 2 teams. Towers also wouldn't hesitate to try to convince him to expand that list if an attractive team made a better offer. It's really three teams, but one of them is in the division, and Towers really doesn't want to improve one of his divisional rivals. So, until Peavy comes out and says "I will accept a trade to the Yankees or someone else," the pool is two unless Towers determines that trading him to the Dodgers is worth it. At this point, Towers is talking to a few other teams. He is in a tough spot with Peavy holding the best cards. Time will tell.

  4. The Pads aren't happy with what the Cubs and Braves offered. They are looking around talking to other clubs. Time will tell.
  5. http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/stories.nsf/cardinals/story/91F14AB4146E96B2862574FB0013787B?OpenDocument Lily mention
  6. cedeno could step in and possibly out hit theriot Sober up. Edmonds could also hit .325 next year and play 150 games.
  7. I would be thrilled with an upgrade at ss. My point is that it isn't Cedeno. Since apparently nobody disagrees with that, let's move on.
  8. hyperbole galore here. Where? The word many? The fact is he had some horrible caught stealing numbers and other situations where he took himself off the basepaths, far more than should be acceptable. I think he's implying that Theriot's base running gaffes do not take away enough of his OBP for it to be a relevant point. I don't agree with him, but I think that's his line of thinking. correct. Trying to insinuate that he had so many "baserunning gaffes" that it erased a .390 OBP is hyperbole. Hey, I am all for upgrading ss, Cedeno would be a significant downgrade, not an upgrade.
  9. hyperbole galore here.
  10. Worse than Ryan Theriot? Not even close Because Ryan Theriot didn't make several boneheaded mistakes throughout this season. No, he did make a few as our starting ss. Cedeno made more in very limited play. Theriot also had close to a .400 OBP. Cedeno, not so much.
  11. Worse than Ryan Theriot? Not even close
  12. agree, I wish Cedeno well, but he isn't very good. He may have the worst baseball instincts of any Cub I have seen.
  13. Looked like Edmonds hurt his right arm when trying to make that diving catch. I'll bet that is why the pinchhitter, take no chances.
  14. well, obviously the rumors are strong that Gaudin's injury occurred as a result of heavy drinking. Guzman I assume is for baseball reasons.
  15. I would leave off Ward and Howry. Neither can be justified to be on the roster.
  16. props to Cro from dredging up this old thread. :)
  17. They are practically the same player. I mean Ludwick was a high school kid drafted in the 2nd round and made it to the majors by age 23. Huffpauir was a college guy drafted in the 13th round and made his major league debut at age 28. Even so, Ludwick isn't going to repeat these flukish numbers ever again. But, then again neither will Huffpauir. So, maybe they are alike. Wasnt Ludwick once considered a top prospect though? I dont think the same can be said for Hoff. I think that was his point, he was being sarcastic. You guys keep believing that guys like Ludwick and Carlos Pena are the norm for 28 year old career minor leaguers. Cub fans are the single most over-reactive fan base in America. Matt Murton had 7 homers in 140 at bats his first cup of coffee, so of course, Cub fans had him pegged to be a 30 homer a year player. Hoff does great in a VERY small sample size and fans are already handing over an everyday job to him for next year. He's probably good enough to be the #1 pinch hitter on a NL team or a DH on a bad AL team, but that's about it. To expect anything more would be....well, that'd be typical of most Cub fans I guess... the "cubs fans are too optimistic and expect amazing things from all their players" angle is not one that will likely ring true here. Yup, I see the opposite here most of the time.
  18. I want anybody but BP Bob.
  19. Looks like the heavy rain will hold off.
  20. rain not supposed to start till overnight. Sat more in jeopardy than Friday.
  21. i think this itself is a bit of hyperbole, if i have my definition straight. never ever go with baseball people, baseball people probably know the least about the game of anyone because they think they know the most. i won't complain about theriot's season because he's been adequate at the position, for the most part. Yeah, sure, I won't go with the baseball people because they think they know baseball. I will go with the moneyball people because they show such great humility when discussing their baseball knowledge. Wow. Again, when posters get entrenched in their position, they resort to hyperbole and extremes to try and make their case. It actually weakens their case. Substitute a few words here and see how silly this statement can sound: never ever go with moneyball people, moneyball people probably know the least about the game of anyone because they think they know the most. since when did humility have anything to do with being right or wrong? and i don't think "moneyball people" is the right term. personally, i think that anyone who professes to be right all the time, especially in a game where so much is up left up to chance, is probably an idiot--no matter who they are. absolutely!
  22. Have a great day everybody and let's go win a World Series!

  24. I am done with this. It has gotten silly with posters trying to justify their positions with hyperbole, over the top arguments and obscure stats. I will go with Lou and the rest of the baseball people on this one--Theriot is our shortstop and has had a fine year. I hope he and Cedeno play well and we win ourselves a World Series. The rest is just noise.
