Message sending for the next game, it's happened since the beginning of the sport. Very similar to how baseball used to be... you take care of it on the field... you hit my guy I'm going to make sure to hit your guy(s)... there were no warnings or ejections for that crap. Let the players police the game themselves. There is a reason why baseball stopped allowing those fights...it's [expletive] and shouldn't be part of the game for the most part. It should be the same why in hockey in terms of warnings and ejections. not really. baseball is not a particularly physical or intense sport. hockey is very much so. rather a couple guys fight each other and end up with a few sore fists than nasty cheapshots happen and guys get seriously hurt. fighting lets the players release frustrations etc. in a pretty safe way. if it were 'banned' guys would resort to very dangerous stickwork or intent to injure hits. so fighting in hockey is a good. Last time I checked the rulebook, slashing, crosschecking, high sticking, and hooking are all penalties and they can get you a major penalty as well. At least that is the sort of stuff I am going to assume you mean by "very dangerous stickwork". Football is a very intense physical sport that doesn't allow fight. You don't see people other than albert haynesworth going up and cleating someone in the face or something like that all the time do you? The same would be true in hockey.
