  1. I remember MacPhail's line (I think it was from the Cubs Convention) when he said he felt the Cubs would have won the World Series in 2003 if Angel had stayed healthy. MacPhail wasn't with the O's last offseason, I believe there were a few people in the organization who liked Gooz last offseason. I'm well aware of that.
  2. the more scientific the data is when it comes to defensive metrics, the more the sabremetric community will embrace it. I await that. I wish I had a better idea of what defensive stats to turn to for quick analysis and comparison. Also, I don't think I really said what I wanted to say in that last post. It's not that I'm really advocating all-glove, no-bat players in our lineup. I do like to see discussion and comparison of the total player rather than just always taking the better offensive player and assuming defense doesn't matter that much. In the majority of cases you obviously should go with the offense. But that .050-.080 point difference in OPS can be made up for if you truly have a difference maker in the field.

  4. This is honestly the most worth I've seen given to defense in my time on these boards and I don't mean that as a knock. Usually most discussions like this are met with the sarcastic "driving in runs with your glove" type remarks or people refuse to believe that a truly elite defender (at a spot like SS) can have value even if they OPS under .650. Not that I'm necessarily advocating bringing in Everett, it's just nice to see people recognize that he has some value even with a putrid bat. As Ping said, we would have one hell of a defense if we added him and kept our outfield the way it stands.
  5. Theriot. Khalil Greene will start No offense to you in particular, but why is everyone so nuts about the average SS Khalil Green? Because Meph started advocating him and posted his rationale. Suddenly a bunch of people who hated him months or even weeks ago (because of the terrible OBP) are clamoring for him.
  6. The injury prone stuff is overhyped. He had two injuries in college, neither to the same body part. He had a high ankle sprain and a broken collarbone on a freak fall. Nothing chronic. All RB's are going to get banged up from time to time. As far as the upright style, if you watch him run, he's rarely upright when he's about to take a hit. He's tall for a RB so he looks upright when he's in the open field but he lowers his pad level when he's near contact. At any rate, nice to see us put away a bad team early and win big (even against a terrible team) without Adrian having any success or our entire running game for that matter. Injury prone doesn't really have anything to do with injuring the same body part. He missed significant time the past two years at Oklahoma and missed two games this year while splitting time. I hope he can stay healthy, but I just don't see any indication he will. I know what you're saying, I guess when I think of injury-prone, I think more of chronic injuries, a series of small injuries, or at least some major things that could linger. A running back having an ankle sprain and a broken bone on a freak landing that didn't involve any ligament damage or long-term risk, I don't see it being as big of an issue as it's been made out to be.

  8. Willis is a freak. It's gotta be the offensive ROY against the defensive ROY in that game. This is the ultimate trap game. The kind of game the Vikings love to lose.
  9. If the Vikings choke against San Francisco.....
  10. I was wondering what the hell that was on his face. When Illinois starting backcourt is Chester Frazier, Trent Meachem and Calvin Brock, there is probably something wrong. Iowa just got pushed around by Iowa State and lost 56-47. We shot 32% from the floor and actually held them to 31%. Without Freeman, our best players are freshman but they got no support. Cole had 15 points (7-10) and 9 boards and Kelly had 13 points, 5 boards and 5 assists. Man do we need him back. Speaking of Freeman, I'm convinced he would be Illinois' best guard this year. Can anyone explain why Weber didn't offer him (in his own backyard when he wanted to go to Illinois) and chose Chester Frazier instead?
  11. Doesn't look like it.
  12. Damn, Freeman is out against Iowa State today.
  13. I don't know that I'm completely behind the Roberts deal but, two guys with an OBP in the neighborhood of .370-.380 and speed hitting 1 and 2 in front of Lee, Ramirez, Soriano would be nice. Fukudome would give us some flexibility and when combined with Pie and Soriano, we would have exceptional outfield defense.
  14. Okay I'm sure it was posted already in this thread but what is the consensus on Roberts' defense at 2B?
  15. Olney just repeated that people are expecting things to heat up after midnight Nashville time. The thought is it's between the Cubs and Padres and many feel the Cubs have the biggest offer on the table right now.
  16. The Hawks win 62-55 at UNI! Unbelievable! I gave us zero chance to win this game. Freeman came back and had 15, freshman SG Jake Kelly had 19. We absolutely abused them on the boards and led all night long. By far the best played game of the year and it's not close. Huge win for Lickliter!
  17. Yeah, I've been reading that as well. I just don't see that happening. I can't see him leaving Iowa. I also don't know how I would feel about that. He turned around an Iowa program a couple years ago, but his teams have been down the past couple of years and he can't even beat Iowa freaking State. The thing is I haven't seen anyone mentioned this week that has a resume which compares with three straight #8 finishes and two shares of the Big Ten title at Iowa. The last 2.5 years have certainly changed things drastically though. I'm not quite sure what he would do at Michigan. I can see him being a lot like Carr but if he were to develop the culture he had at Iowa with the talent he could bring at Michigan, he could be Tressel-like. The last sentence is something I think would really be a strike against him for Michigan. I'm sure they all want something like Tressel coming in and immediately talking about the Michigan game and what his team would do. That's not Kirk. He doesn't treat rivalry games different than others. McCarney did and his teams always played with more fire in that game and often played their best game of the year. With all that said, I think he would listen if they offered but ultimately would turn it down.
  18. I've been trying to get on their the last couple of days but you now have to be a member. Any of their insiders saying anything? Nothing really. Of course, the consensus there is that they want Hill + Pie for Roberts. If it's Gallagher, they want Gallagher + Pie + Patterson. I've learned since reading that board, that they expect a lot for their players. For what reason do you have an account on an Orioles message board?
  19. Between this and his "Life would be easier..." comments, Jim has directly provided punchlines for months to come. Honestly Sam Fuld?
  20. Well Iowa will probably lose by 20 or more to UNI Wednesday night. Tony Freeman probably won't be back until next week with his injury. The freshman starting PG playing with a broken thumb for the last two weeks won't be available because his grandmother just died and he'll be at the funeral. Our former walk-on wing who was forced to backup PG with Freeman's injury was arrested for public intox Sunday night and is suspended. Long story short we have no PG for the game and only 3 guards/wings available to fill the 1, 2 and 3 spots. Lickliter has to be wondering what he did to deserve this as he watches the #13 ranked Butler team he built continue to roll.
  21. Neither would I. I would definitely trade Marshall for him though.
  22. Les Miles is a goofy SOB. Spencer Johnson is also an idiot.
  23. There are SOOO many rumors floating around here right now it's not even funny. At this point I'm just waiting until something is finalized one way or the other, so I don't get caught up in the hoopla. I won't be upset either way. Frankly, I might be glad if LM leaves at this point. Wow, if that's true then Herbstreit's credibility is going to take a huge hit. I disagree. It's not like he's Chris Mortenson or Andy Katz and it's his job to report on rumors and get scoops. He's an analyst who apparently thought he had the right news and it turned out to be false. His credibility comes from being the best college football analyst on tv. Who knows, maybe Miles was set to agree with Michigan and had planned on Tenuta being his DC, but before it went official LSU stepped up with a huge offer. These things are never a done deal until the ink is dry on the contract but an agent or athletic program can believe they're almost certain.
  24. 29 turnovers (yes that was 40% of their possessions tonight) and 14-26 from the FT will do that to you. Unbelievable. This was the first game this year where I really didn't think the coaching staff did a very good job. When they went zone our offense was baffled, we overhelped defensively to no end in the last 16 minutes leading to wide open 3's, could not get the ball inside despite having a major advantage and had some questionable substitution patterns.
  25. Well it sucks getting dominated by the ACC again. Give the Big Ten one or two more years though to be up around the top in the nation. I really feel the coaches in the league are as strong as they have been in quite a while. We know what Izzo, Ryan and Matta can do. Weber is getting better recruits in the future. Sampson was a big upgrade at IU and Painter looks very solid. Michigan, Iowa and Minnesota all made real upgrades this year with Beilein, Lickliter and Tubby. None of the top 9 figure to be leaving anytime within the next few years.
