  1. Assad was fine yesterday and unlucky. He had a batter fly out to PCA, the best in the game. It would have been the 3rd out. But, PCA lost it in the sun and the next guy up hits a HR, for 2 runs. Inning should have been over and he would have only given up 2 runs on a day with the wind blowing out.
  2. IMO, Both Castro and Turner need to have minimum time at the plate or in the field. And I would not sit Busch for every LHP. That's being over done.
  3. Turner is a great clubhouse guy. He deserves a position with the Cubs org. if he wants one. However, he should be removed from the roster as he is struggling offensively and is being used only as a DH or PH. His value is leadership, but no longer on the field.
  4. I remember how panicked the Front Office was in trying to sign a 3rd baseman to supplant Shaw. I posted that it would be a huge mistake to give up on him and have to give up either Cassie or Alcantra or other top prospects. Matt Shaw will have ups and downs at the plate. But right now, he and Hoerner are playing Gold Glove defense and both have saved runs. Matt has been outstanding on D. There is no reason to search for a 3rd baseman as we potentially have a great one. His offense and Hoerner's have solidified the Cubs lately.
  5. I wouldn't solely bench Happ. He has hit better and how many times has he hit the ball to be robbed by a great OF play or a catch at the wall. Cassie should play more until he proves otherwise, but Suzuki should be in the mix to lose time. The 1st pitch is his failure. He fails to swing at what usually is the best pitch to hit, then is in the hole 0-1 and goes downward from there.
  6. As I said from the start of the season, Tucker was a very slight upgrade over Belli. I was wrong. Belli is the upgrade over Tucker. He can play 4 positions well. His year thus far has been better. Hoyer, who got an undeserved extension is to blame. Giving up 2 good players and possibly a third in Hayden W. plus paying the Yanks $5 million. to take Belli was ridiculous. We could have used that package (many teams wanted Paredes) to get a SP. I would not extend Tucker now, even if he has a good rest of the year. Boras will make too many demands and we have some good OF prospects, not just Cassie and Alcantara, who will be inexpensive and allow us more room in free agency.
  7. So glad we didn't take the bait to sign Suarez and give up top prospects. I urged long ago that Shaw is our 3B period. Of course he struggled when he first came up, but even then his defense has saved several runs. We have a terrific IF and a terrific OF. However, I would not sign Tucker to a long term deal which Boras will want. We have Cassie, Alcantara and more and Suzuki plays a respectable RF.
  8. I would not extend Tucker. As I stated at the beginning of the season, he isn't much of an upgrade from Bellinger. Both are good players. But check the stats, they are similar with a slight edge to Belli. And we stupidly paid $5 mil of his salary to NY and gave up 3 decent players. IMO, Hoyer signed Tucker as his job was in jeopardy. There is about a 5% chance that Tucker will resign as his agent is Boras, who puts money over comfort levels. Tucker is not worth a long term contract at funny money. If he were to sign for 3 yrs. at $40 mil. per, I would be OK with that. But he won't and I don't want another Jason Heyward deal.
  9. NO to Suarez, a 60 day rental. I think Cam Smith is the answer at 3B. How many runs has he already saved? His bat is coming around. May Ryno rest in peace, but he struggled badly when he first came up. So did Tucker who was also sent down. I wouldn't trade for Suarez under any circumstances. Offense is not normally the problem and he is not a good fielder. Right now we have close to a Gold Glove IF and OF. Don't mess up the chemistry. Cam Smith will be an excellent player.
  10. If Tucker leaves, which is likely, due in part to Boras, we need Cassie and or Alcantara. I don't want another Jason Heyward contract. 3 years tops. I can understand it if we got a #2 Starter and had to package one of them with some other prospects, but otherwise we need to keep at least one of them.
  11. Horton was terrific for 6+ innings. And as I have repeatedly said, Shaw is our 3B. We don't need another one. Bench help instead of Berti, Brujan and Turner would we welcome, but Shaw should play nearly every day.
  12. Here are the stats as of today: Bellinger .282 19 HR 58 RBI 840 OPS Tucker. .275 18 HR, 58 RBI 874 OPS So, was it worth paying the Yanks, $5 mil and giving up Paredes, an All Star and Cam Smith who is having a great yr., + Hayden who is injured? And I would give only a 10% chance that Tucker signs with us. And I doubt he will take a 3 yr. extension. Any longer would be dangerous. (e.g. Heyward )
  13. Our bench of Berti, Brujan and Turner have cost us games. None can field like Shaw who is now pounding the ball. We need to keep him and focus not on a rental like Suarez, but bench help and a starting pitcher under control or who agrees to an extension. Our offense has been really good so far. Get the bench help which would come without top prospects being moved and focus on a starter. But don't give up the farm for a rental. We did that for Tucker, who with Boras will leave us and we need Cassie to take that slot. Ironic that Bellinger and Tucker are not that far apart and Bellinger plays IB as well as all 3 OF slots. Beyond ignorant to pay $5 mil. of his salary to the Yanks for a 1 yr rental.
  14. Totally ignorant to get a replacement for Matt Shaw when he plays gold glove caliber defense. Shaw is now hitting the ball hard. We have enough offense to handle 1 below average hitter. Shaw also has good speed. To get Suarez for 60 days and pay a heavy price is ridiculous. Hoyer went all in on a 1 yr. rental for Tucker, even paying NYY $5 mil. of Bellinger's contract. Is there a difference? Yes, but slight. At the end of the year, their stats won't be that far apart. And Belli is more versatile and plays IB and all OF positions. We gave up Paredes, an All Star this yr. and top Rookie, Cam Smith + Hayden who is now injured. Was it worth it? Heck no. Not for a 1 yr rental represented by Borass who bleeds teams for long term funny money deals. We should not agree to anything more than a 3 yr. extension and that won't be accepted. We need improvement on our bench. Turner is a great clubhouse guy and should be a coach. Berti and Brujan are not good at all. Hoyer, don't make another mistake. Stick with Shaw.
  15. 2 Cubs IMO were heavily underrated by Sports Media: Suzuki and Nico. Nico has been the steadiest of Cubs all yr. He leads all 2B in defense. He is a threat to run and adds speed. But, most of all, he has been either #1 or #2 in avg. with men in scoring position. I remember Cubs thinking of trading him in spring training. That would have been a horrible mistake. He is solid and has been at the .285-.300 mark most of the year. A keeper for sure.
  16. Not impressed with the Cubs draft at all. They selected many players without a commit to drop college. They picked a few players coming off serious injuries. I see quantity, but not quality with very few exceptions.
  17. We have a surplus of MLB ready outfielders tho 1 will likely be traded for pitching help, hopefully not a 1 yr rental. IMO, there were good pitchers still available when the Cubs selected the 2 outfielders. Big mistake. And all 3 of their picks were predicted to go below where they were selected. Grade = D
  18. I know the sentiment is to trade Cassie. I disagree. Unless Tucker signs a 3-4 yr deal with the Cubs, Cassie will be needed. Certainly, never trade him for a 1 yr. rental. The only weak hitter in the lineup which already scores lots of runs is Shaw and his superb fielding has already saved runs. He will come around. We gave up Paredes who has 18 HR and is fielding well and rarely strikes out and Cam Smith who is having an outstanding, true rookie year + Hayden for a 1 yr rental. Tucker has been very good, but was just traded so Hoyer could keep his job. Let's not make the same mistake with Cassie as Cam Smith..
  19. What I have said from the beginning is that is was foolish to trade for Tucker without getting an extension. That was done to save Hoyer's job. He is represented by the shark, Boras, who puts money way ahead of players' comfort levels where they are. Boras also has conflicts of interest when he represents so many players and often several at the same position. Tucker is an outstanding player, Bellinger whom they discarded and paid part of his salary is a very good player. Bellinger fields well and can play 1st as well as all OF positions. There is a difference, but not worth the likely 1 yr. rental. How will Tucker even spend the money he will be getting?
  20. The Cubs have several players at or below the Mendoza line and some have to go. Lopez, Brujan, Berti, Turner. None are even above average defensively. Either Brujan or Berti need to go. One could be kept for their speed. Then decide between Lopez or Turner. I would rather have Matt Shaw and his low batting average to learn as he goes. He is at least as good a fielder as any of the above. Carrying 4 primarily infielders who can't hit a lick is ridiculous.
  21. Obviously, Tucker is a terrific player and will help the Cubs win more games. However, it was beyond ignorant to trade for him, giving up good assets (many teams wanted Paredes, Hayden always had good stuff, and Cam was a top prospect) without an extension at that time. A 1 yr. rental to save a GM's job was foolish.
  22. A 3 yr extension is what we should have obtained for Tucker instead of a 1 yr. rental. Not 5-6 years that Boras wants for Bergman. Big diff. betw. 3 and 5-6 yrs. I am totally against 1 yr rentals for big money.
  23. Bregman is an excellent player, now 30. He is represented by Boras who wants a 5-6 yr. deal. How did that work out with Bellinger, whom the Cubs dumped on only a 3 yr deal, getting virtually nothing for him in return. Bellinger is still a good player but in a salary dump, he was gone. Beyond foolish with so many good prospects like Shaw to enter into a long term deal. How did that work out for Heyward? And tho I really like Tucker, he should never have been obtained without more than a 1 yr. rental guaranteed.
  24. I prefer keeping Nico than getting into another long term deal with Boras. Especially true with opt outs. Give Shaw a chance or sign Bergman for a short term deal. No more long term deals and once again, you never should buy a 1 yr rental like Tucker unless a long time deal is worked out before the deal. Nothing against Bergman but he's 30 and a really good player, but not for $25-$30 mil a year.
