  1. I know the sentiment is to trade Cassie. I disagree. Unless Tucker signs a 3-4 yr deal with the Cubs, Cassie will be needed. Certainly, never trade him for a 1 yr. rental. The only weak hitter in the lineup which already scores lots of runs is Shaw and his superb fielding has already saved runs. He will come around. We gave up Paredes who has 18 HR and is fielding well and rarely strikes out and Cam Smith who is having an outstanding, true rookie year + Hayden for a 1 yr rental. Tucker has been very good, but was just traded so Hoyer could keep his job. Let's not make the same mistake with Cassie as Cam Smith..
  2. What I have said from the beginning is that is was foolish to trade for Tucker without getting an extension. That was done to save Hoyer's job. He is represented by the shark, Boras, who puts money way ahead of players' comfort levels where they are. Boras also has conflicts of interest when he represents so many players and often several at the same position. Tucker is an outstanding player, Bellinger whom they discarded and paid part of his salary is a very good player. Bellinger fields well and can play 1st as well as all OF positions. There is a difference, but not worth the likely 1 yr. rental. How will Tucker even spend the money he will be getting?
  3. The Cubs have several players at or below the Mendoza line and some have to go. Lopez, Brujan, Berti, Turner. None are even above average defensively. Either Brujan or Berti need to go. One could be kept for their speed. Then decide between Lopez or Turner. I would rather have Matt Shaw and his low batting average to learn as he goes. He is at least as good a fielder as any of the above. Carrying 4 primarily infielders who can't hit a lick is ridiculous.
  4. Obviously, Tucker is a terrific player and will help the Cubs win more games. However, it was beyond ignorant to trade for him, giving up good assets (many teams wanted Paredes, Hayden always had good stuff, and Cam was a top prospect) without an extension at that time. A 1 yr. rental to save a GM's job was foolish.
  5. A 3 yr extension is what we should have obtained for Tucker instead of a 1 yr. rental. Not 5-6 years that Boras wants for Bergman. Big diff. betw. 3 and 5-6 yrs. I am totally against 1 yr rentals for big money.
  6. Bregman is an excellent player, now 30. He is represented by Boras who wants a 5-6 yr. deal. How did that work out with Bellinger, whom the Cubs dumped on only a 3 yr deal, getting virtually nothing for him in return. Bellinger is still a good player but in a salary dump, he was gone. Beyond foolish with so many good prospects like Shaw to enter into a long term deal. How did that work out for Heyward? And tho I really like Tucker, he should never have been obtained without more than a 1 yr. rental guaranteed.
  7. I prefer keeping Nico than getting into another long term deal with Boras. Especially true with opt outs. Give Shaw a chance or sign Bergman for a short term deal. No more long term deals and once again, you never should buy a 1 yr rental like Tucker unless a long time deal is worked out before the deal. Nothing against Bergman but he's 30 and a really good player, but not for $25-$30 mil a year.
  8. It is absolute madness to trade part of the Cubs outstanding prospects for a 1 yr rental UNLESS it comes with an extension. The move for Tucker and possible move for Cease is just an attempt by Hoyer to save his job. No to any trade for rentals without an extension.

  9. Enough with injured, marginal pitchers. Give Tucker what he is asking for in Arbitration. The difference is slight. It was beyond ignorant to sign him for a 1 yr. rental to preserve Hoyer's job. You ask the team you are trading with for permission to talk to your new acquisition before you take him in trade. If he says no to an extension, it should be a hard pass.
  10. IMO, giving away Bellinger for almost nothing in return was a horrible mistake. Many teams were looking for both OFs and 1B and Belli is above average in both. To throw in another $5 mil was foolish. What is worse is that the move for Tucker is likely a 1 yr. rental. He will command big money and to not have an extension worked out with him before the trade is malpractice. It was done because he is an upgrade over Belli, but not enough to justify a 1 yr rental. It was done by Hoyer to hopefully preserve his job and allow a good shot at the playoffs.
  11. Pitifully low return for Cody. Many teams were looking for a 1B and OF help, esp. a left handed bat. We got a 30 yr old reliever with a fair minor league record and I believe 5 games in MLB that went well. Last yr. Cody only played 130 games and was injured. His prior year was outstanding. He hits LHP as well as RHP and is a plus defender in OF and 1B. A trade with Seattle for 1 of their SPs, even if we had to pay a little more was the best option.
  12. I enjoy your articles. But, there should be far more criticism about giving Belli away for an unproven, 30 yr. old reliever with a bad minor league record. Seattle is begging for a good 1st baseman. They have a surplus of good pitchers. Surely, Hoyer could have traded the versatile Belli to them, along with a mid range prospect for a front line pitcher, even if we had to pay $10 mil. of his salary. That would be far cheaper than getting a frontline pitcher. Toronto also would have been interested. Shame on the Cubs for even paying a penny of Belli's salary for basically no return.
