  1. I would say there aren't many teams that fair very well when trailing by 5 runs or more after 8 innings. I find it amazing the cubs have been trailing by 5 or more runs 22 times heading into the 9th inning.
  2. Bryan Johnson and Dusty Dvoracek were placed on IR. In my opinion, the Johnson injury is one that won't get a lot of coverage like the Benson, Jones, Browns (M and A) injuries but this is a big part of the offense. I don't think too many of us are expecting anything spectacular from the passing game, so its run, run, run. With the #1 fullback out for the season, the running game will be hurting. Hopefully McKie can step up, like he's done in the past, and do an adequate job.
  3. Maybe they can just buy their way out of that group We're talking about the champion's league, all of these teams are loaded with money. Its not like Barca is poor or something...18 million pounds to buy Ronaldinho says plenty about their financial state. Real Madrid isn't doing too bad financially, either. Exactly the G-14 teams and the remainder of the big clubs in the champions league spend massive amounts of money. Chelsea gets singled out now, because its a relatively new trend for them.

  5. Chelsea got hosed by the draw. Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United were all put into Pot 1. The Champions of England were put into Pot 2 and now have an uphill fight to advance past the second round. If they place second behind Barca, they will have to play the winner of another group and probably one of the better teams in the champions league.
  6. Kalas has a fantastic announcing voice.
  7. Chelsea got embarassed last night at 'Boro. I think this team is not as strong as the last two have been, hopefully they can get healthy and play up to their capabilities.
  8. Actually, Dusty did comment on that one-he called the Pierre steal from the dugout-so he can't exactly criticize Pierre since it was Dusty's fault. His comments were posted the next day at the end of that particular game thread. my fault, i never saw. nevermind.
  9. Pierre tried to steal second with 2 outs late in the game a few weeks ago when the game tying run was either up or on deck. Never heard a peep out of Dusty on that one. Both plays are stupid.
  10. Brad Biggs' piece in today's Sun-Times.
  11. It's Tony that doesn't get FSC. I have FSC and GolTV (gotta watch my first love - Roma!) through Dish Network. my bad. well in any case, i only spend $5 a month on mine. Do you know if you can get it with any package? Hmm...I'll have to check specifics when I get home tonight, because I can't get onto Comcast's website. If my memory is correct, I have Digital Cable Silver and then I just added on the Sports Package that includes FSC and GOLTV this summer.

  13. No. Its definitely much worse than MLB with its disparity in finances. Look at Chelsea, up until they were bought by Abramovich, they had a very outside chance of actually winning the Premiership. They were constituently finishing 2-6 in the league. They now have more money than anybody else and have dominated the league to the point some lower tiered teams aren't bringing their 1st squads into Stamford Bridge for a match. For teams such as Everton, Tottenham, Bolton, Blackburn, Newcastle they are all battling for the 5th league spot, maybe even the 4th spot like last year. Spots 1-4 guarantee a spot in the Championships League, which guarantees more exposure and most importanly more money. The 5th spot goes to the redheaded step child of European competitions the UEFA Cup, which is far less prestigous. Any team in England, regardless of league, has a chance to win the League Cup and FA Cup which helps them get into Europe. Those tourneys give poorer, less talented teams a chance to win because it can be won with a few victories rather than a long drawn out league season with 38 games. BTW, Seth, I have Comcast and I got the FSC for $5 a month. I don't know how important it is for you, but to me it was a no-brainer at that cost.
  14. why does the MLS control the rights to its players when every other club in the world controls their own players?
  15. I remember when he was really good.
  16. that time he adjusted his crotch.
  17. Chelsea won its first match of the season 3-0 over Man City. I like how Deadspin covered the game, "it looked like the Globetrotters v. Generals." I love Fox Soccer Channel.
  18. when he was inexplicably laying on his back in the Cubs bullpen and got hit with a ball.
  19. Here's what cubs.com has to say about the upcoming rotation.
  20. Why is he your first choice? There are a number of reasons that I've liked Gonzalez. If the Cubs want to hire someone who isn't a retread, Gonzalez has earned his stripes. He's been a successful minor league manager and has learned under Cox in Atlanta. Personally, I think Atlanta has been the best run team over the last decade and a half, and hopefully Gonzalez brings some of that philosophy with him. I read that part too fast and had a good chuckle.
  21. how can his late of discipline "cancel out" his OPS? his lack of discipline is factored into OPS (thru OBP). that's like saying the outs a guy makes cancels out his batting average. Patterson has hit about 8 million solo home runs. What does this have to do with what abuck asked? And what does it have to do with what you originially said?
