    I think that the brief arguement over my other post (thanks for the support CW) was indicitive of what I was talking about. In no way was I saying that I was satisified with finishing 4th or 3rd or 1st in the divison. I too, of course, want a championship team. However, I can identify that there can be sucess without a championship. I see that over the last 3 and a half years there has been substansial successes to praise. There have been some monuemental failures as well but typically, the successes have outweighed the failures. If I get branded as an optimistic fan, thanks. I prefer to look at the positives side of an acquisition by the team. There are drawbacks to everything. However, there are positives as well. Why complain?

    I have begun to shake my head at these threads more and more. We demand changes from a "top 5" payroll team because it didn't work. So we put our money where our mouth is and people are upset with the way it is being spent. Yet none of the current ransactions have resulted in the team not acquiring any other players. Eventully will it? Maybe, but not before the remaining issues have been dealt with. As for the idea of Hendry having a top 5 payroll and not being successful with I strongly disagree. Defining success is winning. Hendry has won more games in his tenure then any other GM in recent history. Now our expectations are higher because of this sucess. But what is interesting is that the sucess that led to the higher expectations now is not deemed as sucess at all but an example of the failure of the administration. Its not faith that we need to have in the leaders of the Cubs organization, we just need to tell ourselves the right stories.

    What I think is interesting is that the thread that is titled "Dreams of Giles in Cubbie blue" is 13 pages long and the post that says that the percieved front runner for Giles' service is only three. I think it is fair to ask "Is it eaiser to be negative towards the Cubs?"

    I agree with your position on Dope, but I think we all have to remember that it is a lot easier for a pitcher to stick after the Rule 5 draft then a position player. Sisco being able to be stashed in the back of the Royals bullpen is a lot more likely then someone keeping Dopirak on their bench for a whole season.     Lewis was outrighted with Fontenot & Rochelik. Greenberg will be a Cub. Craig puts it well by saying that we have to wait for the process to go through. A couple of interesting points, Should we lose Fontenot then only Hairston (who is a bubble non-tender) is all to show for Sosa. The needed roster spots to open for FA will come with the non tender deadline, which (I believe) is also the deadline to move Wood back to the roster. For those who say that we should have risked losing Dope becasue he likely wouldn't stick is somewhat alarming. Many of us (me included) never dreamnt that Sisco would stick and he did. I would rather be safe with Dope at the expense of losing Sing or Fontenot then lose Dope (our #2 prospect remeber) for nothing.

    You are wrong on the first. You cannot be anything but wrong on the first. Any time you spend any money on anything you have taken money away from the general pool. unless hendry's plan was to end the offseason with several million in his budget unspent, this has affected the team. Obviously it takes away from the budget but it isn't such a percentage of the budget that will result in the Cubs from not signing someone else. My point is to say that if you don't like the acquisition because of the money spent, the affect shouldn't be that great to refrian from acquiring someone that you want. How would you feel as a Marlins fan because you have to trade other elements of your team becasue of the percentage of budget you are spending on Delgado & Lowell. As for the structure of the contract, it is certainly manageable and it is something I am noticing that Hendry has been doing more often. He is using signing bonuses as a way of mazimizing the value of the contract to hte player but also maximizes the hit to the payroll. If you take away the signing bonus from Eyre the contract that hits the budget is certainly more manageable. He basically takes Hawkins' salary.

    Since Neifi re-signed with his originating team can't he be traded? Unless since he declared FA it kicks this clause in.

    Well, I did read the majority of the thread, and I didn't say all posters were disappointed, I merely recaped the predominant school of thought. What other relievers are you wanting? Vance, how do we know what type FA Eyre is? Have those been established? I haven't seen the list.

    well, reading the first few pages before dinner and then coming back and seeing 16 more pages added, I can only guess at the content. Would this be accurate to describe to general consenus? Posters dislike the money & years spent. Posters don't understand the move when the team already has 2 LH pen options and people are calling for Hendry's head. For all the head scratchers, I ask this question... Will this signing prevent the team from making any future moves and is this player a worse option then what we currently have on the team? I answer both questions no. Therefore, no matter the outcome of this signing, I will not call for the GM's head for signing relief help and I will not call other posters names.

    Cameron takes over for Giles. This is the the sing saying that Giles is not going to re-sign. An OF of Kleskp, Roberts and Cameron in SD this coming season. Too bad for Nady, he will provde the same offense as Comareon for a fraction of the cost. I enjoyed his "eckstein like" attitude in SD.

    Where is the evidence that many teams would be all over Bradley if he was non tendered? IIRC when Cleveland traded him, there weren't that many takers. The local channels out here have made Bradley public enemy #1. But they have also said that any new GM in LA's 1st priority is to resolve the issue. If the rumors are true about Bowden having interest, it wouldn't suprise me if LA keeps him. Bowden seems to like the edgy players and has had some sucess with them. Regardless, Bradley is headed down the Terrell Owens road. Sure he hasn't been quite that dramtic but for as talented of a player he is, he is certainly wasting it. Bradley is not a player that I would like to see on any team I root for because it would be hard for me to root for the guy. Yes he has problems, but where is the evidence that he is controlling them or at least improving on them? How many chances does he get or should he get?

    I think that the posts in this thread have clearly outlined a huge liking for Big Z. I would generally agree with them. However, I would vehemently be opposed to NOT trading him. A trade for Abreu and a solid starter (Jon Lieber) plus Michaels would be a good package for Z & Patterson. I would think hard about that trade. But here is an intersting, albeit radical and loony suggestion. We all know that the Phillies would like to unload Thome and his contract. Adding him into a deal would bring back something of value. Currently the team can handle his contract and can fit into the lineup. Lee is athletic enough to move to LF if Nomar is. Like I said, crazy silly and probably one of the worst but still fun to think about.

    This is just plain ridiculous. No One can provide any transaction that Hendry has made (other then Andy Sisco) that he has been on the complete losing end. So Hendry signs a LH Swingman for $3 million a year for only 2 years. Wow, he has really handcuffed us with that contract. I mean if Rusch is completely ineffective that $3 million will stop the team from doing anything positive. The idea of this poll is really saying that the RUMORED Rusch deal (not official yet) is the make or break transaction of the offseason. Forget the closer & setup guys that Hendry pretty much saved from the scrap heap. Guys, Hendry is not part of any problems. Hendry is bar far one of the better GM's of the Cubs and its time not to nitpick but actually step back from a single transaction and look at the whole body of work.

    So now the talk in LA is getting rid of DePo (link) Maybe the new GM (already speculating that Pat Gillick is set to return) will have enough sense to Hire Dusty Baker. :P
