  1. It's a blessing having a good kicker.
  2. FYI, that was from last year. I haven't looked it up, but what did you lose from last year and what have they replaced it with? Also, did your S&C coach change recently? It's about a 3 year slide before the results are felt ... Look up the Cam Maybin before/after pics. That should have occurred in college. yeah instead he just dominated college OT's and got drafted in the first half of the first round. Agreed. But how much better could he have been had he been properly trained?
  3. Not for the head coaches. The assistants do all the work. that's just not true. I wouldn't say the assistants do all the work, but at many schools they do a large majority of it. I'm sure there are some head coaches that like to be more involved than others, and for some, the level of involvement might depend on the recruit. But for the most part, there's usually an assistant coach that handles most of the legwork when it comes to recruiting. Head coaches don't hit the road a lot in football recruiting. I think they get 1 in home visit per recruit and that is usually done with the big time recruits closer to signing day. I think they spend more time on the phones and writing letters when it comes to recruiting. Writing letters? I'm guessing that's left up to the secretarial pool ...
  4. Depends on who they choose. I think Texas and FSU will have their coaches there for a while (Muschamp and Jimbo). But the key is finding someone now and naming him HCIW. Someone who is younger but retains the same values as JoePa, but is more aggressive.

  6. plus it's all coming from some coach's wife at a tailgate? i suspect that most coach's wives have a little more discipline than to just spout off every problem with the program. this same [expletive] happened in the early 2000s when PSU was bad or mediocre most years; everyone said paterno didn't know what was going on, there was no discipline, in-fighting, etc. then the program got good for a few years and all of a sudden the rumors went away. As an expert in this, all it takes is getting a S&C coach who doesn't know what he's doing to ruin quite a bit of a program these days. Take the Front 7 from any of the top 15 teams from last year and add up their weights. Now look at the order from highest to lowest weight, and it has a miraculous correlation to their overall defensive rank. I'd like to see the numbers on this. You're obviously correct on your point of the importance of a S&C program, but I'm not sure that I buy raw weight of a front 7 as such a huge factor. I had to search for where I had read it, but here's what I found:
  7. A couple of things about this: 1. It doesn't take $200K to land a top player. Rumor is that Patrick Peterson accepted $35K and $500/month to go to LSU. Where is this rumored? People associated with recruiting in the state of Florida that I know. I know about quite a few skeletons in closets.

I don't know about basketball, but in college football the boosters don't pay the players like the agents do. Instead, they pay the families of the players, where mysterious envelopes full of cash and game tickets pop up on their doorstep the week of a game.

Take the Front 7 from any of the top 15 teams from last year and add up their weights. Now look at the order from highest to lowest weight, and it has a miraculous correlation to their overall defensive rank. FSU was a big loser in that regard as well. We hired someone as our S&C coach who was an ex-player (and a pretty good one) to get around the "no coaches" rule during summer workouts. The problem was that he didn't have players training effectively, and when combined with a poor nutrition program, the players were getting smaller compared to the teams they were playing. Now that Bobby is gone, we brought in a S&C coach who knows what he's doing, have a nutritionist who knows what he's doing, and have a bigger Front 7 - and we're winning more games. Don't underrate the S&C aspect - it's the foundation for the program. Additionally, the last time that there was a groundswell that JoePa should go, he had the good sense to bring in a new Offensive Coordinator. This brought new life to a program, recruiting improved, and PSU was rejuvenated. We had a half-assed attempt at that, but instead of giving the power to the guy who could have done some good things (Jimbo, as he's doing now) he was relegated to 4th in the pecking order. The question is whether this is just a set of growing pains, or if it's something bigger - and you don't normally know it's something bigger until it's too late. I'm glad that we made the change, and that a Board Member sacrificed himself for the good of the program and the university. We're winning, donations have increased, ticket sales are back up, and there is excitement around the program again. It was good, but it took someone with a HUGE set to pull it off.
  10. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/magazine/10/12/agent/index.html?eref=sihp This is pretty bad, and in light of the recent NCAA sanctions (USC & UNC), more will likely be coming out about it. Ohio State is already looking into the Santonio Holmes stuff.
  11. Those are a joke. Florida State got slapped by the 26th team on that list as did Cal versus Nevada. Are we too high at #4? Heck, yes. But we played OU at just the right time for them, and just the wrong time for us. Things would be different were we to play again. Would we win? No idea, but we wouldn't get blown out, that's for sure. I would say that anywhere between 12-15 is where we should be right now ...
  12. For you PSU fans, thought you might find this interesting (from another forum): After what we at FSU went through the previous 10 years, I understand and have some compassion for you.
  13. yeah no kidding, it's not like bowden was having trouble blowing out bad i-aa teams. You serious, Clark? We WERE having problems with FCS teams, almost getting beat by Jax. St. last year and haven't covered the spread of more than 10 points against an unranked team in 3-4 years. This is the first time in a LONG TIME that we've been able to beat a team convincingly that we were supposed to beat that badly. It's one of the first times we've been able to get our 1st teamers off the field at the end of the first half and develop some depth. yes eddie, i am serious. jacksonville state is not a bad i-aa team - you may have noticed that they beat a i-a team yesterday. and if by LONG TIME you mean less than two years, then you're completely right, because this happened in 2008: Sat, Sep 6 Western Carolina W 69-0 Sat, Sep 13 Chattanooga W 46-7 those are bad i-aa teams. who bobby bowden-coached teams beat just two years ago. so i would hold off on pronouncements of "we're back baby!" until after you beat a team that's better than sanford. Forgot about W. Carolina, but we didn't cover against Chattanooga. Not to mention we only scored 9 ponts in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, and 7 in the 4th. Hradly a convincing win. And no where did I pronounce that "we're back, baby!" but rather that we're moving in the right direction.

It's one of the first times we've been able to get our 1st teamers off the field at the end of the first half and develop some depth. This game was HUGE for us right before OU, as we developed some depth, got some PT for freshman, and were able to have a "practice" at game speed to debut a new defense and defensive staff, RB coach (who has made amazing contributions to our style), and see where some of our weaknesses fall. As someone who watches all of their games, there was a noticeable difference in our size, power, and speed on defense thanks to the new S&C coach, and a new scheme (first time we've shown multiple - more than 2 - coverages in a game in 20 years or so). Big week for us, and a great way to see how the staff works together. I can't wait to see how next week unfolds, but we're moving in the right direction. It feels pretty nice.
  15. Welp, glad to see that all the changes at FSU have paid off. We keep winning and all the stupid Bobby Bowden "I should have had 1 more year" interviews will go buh-bye.
  16. At the restaurant where I'm watching, someone just said "the French left their border open, and Mexico is exploiting it as well as they do here." I lol'ed.
  17. The lengths to which the bikers would go to beat the tests is truly amazing: http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/cycling/news/story?id=5222488 That outlines what was going on, and just how impossible it was to catch them, even with some of the best testing available.
  18. Yes, please. Sometimes I think that I'm one of the few people who likes Wrigley, but prefers the modern amenities of other stadiums.
  19. As I posted in the other thread (NFL offseason), I was informed this is the accuser: http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/stuy119/jsng1t.jpg
  20. This won't come out for a while, but here's the girl: http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/stuy119/jsng1t.jpg
  21. yeah, florida and lsu and ohio st and usc (et cetera) are going to attract more talent because they send players to the nfl, have very good coaches, some are located in places that players want to live for a few years... it's never going to be a level playing field because texas and florida and california produce more high school talent, and so on. ok, i mean that it should be level in terms of the rules in the rule book. like, washington shouldn't lose out on a recruit to usc because usc boosters have promised the recruit's parents a new house and washington's athletic department won't allow that to happen. the rules may not be great but they're there, and should be enforced until they cease to exist. Something needs to be done about the promising of jobs to families of recruits.
  22. Seeing this thread makes me sad that I don't get to see FSU games regularly while living up north. This used to be the spring sport of choice when I lived down there and knew many of the players personally. Now, I've been reduced to watching their games come tourney time.
  23. Seriously, FSU was raked over the coals and the coaches had no idea of what was happening. A rogue tutor was giving answers to tests in the auditorium during the class. There was ZERO chance of a coach being there to know what was going on. As a result, we lost 14 wins (fair or not, it's not a big deal) and 10 scholarships (just in football). The other sports really hurt, but we're talking football here. The USC situation is more concerning on some levels, because there were red flags ignored in multiple areas.
  24. FSU with a strong NSD. Top 6 on ESPN, Top 10 on Rivals. And we lost out on Jeremy Deering, Demar Dorsey, Corey Lemonier, Mack Brown (not a serious possibility), Calvin Smith, and JR Ferguson. This could have been a MONSTER class, and we really only had 1 full month of recruiting without our previous (mostly) useless staff. Feels good. We have a great staff, good recruits, and a bit of enthusiasm running through the program. Back to the top.
  25. I can't begin to tell you how happy I am that Bowden is gone and that we were able to get Fisher installed before this mess hit the fan.
