  1. Can't hit leadoff. Can't steal either. Pathetic 0%. What a bum...
  2. I'll go out on a limb and say that this move works out well for the Cardinals. I'm a big believer in taking everything into account when judging a player. And I think you kind of have to take into account just how freaking depressing being a Padre must have been for him. Especially last season. Knowing you play in a ballpark that mine as well have been designed with screwing you over is one thing. Doing that AND playing for a laughing stock is another. I mean, it's kind of strange that his OPS in wins was .840 and in losses it was .438. You kind of have to wonder how many games became lost causes and beat the guy down to a point where on that 4th or 5th AB he just said "bleep it". If I had to wager a guess, I think a .250/.300/.450 line is pretty likely. Not exactly setting the world on fire but if he can pull his head out of his rump defensively I think the Cards will be pretty happy.
  3. It could be strategy on the Padres part. Start moving some of your trade chips and see if Peavy becomes any less picky. Something tells me that a firesale just might get him to budge and explore other options.
  4. Not a chance. If Woody were hoping for the kind of contract we could apparently afford, it would have been signed a long time ago. An "incentive laden contract" this time around would have probably meant $7 mil with another 3 or 4 in incentives. If anything, Wood recently put the little "I would have came back for a one year deal" talk out there to spook the club into not offering arbitration. Now the team that he signs a 2 or 3 year deal with won't lose a thing. Just stop dreaming guys, unless the market is insanely low Kerry Wood isn't going to come crawling back. Just be happy we live in the days of MLB Extra Innings. Think how much this separation would have sucked back in the day...
  5. It hurts like hell, but I took a hint when Hendry said he wasn't coming back and came to terms with it. Losing the draft picks hurt like hell anew, though. Then again, things are shaping up to be weird this offseason. So much talent but it really feels like the money has dried up. Damn economy. We'll be fine. Time for Marmol to shine. Time for Shark and Marshall to step up. Maybe we can even remember that we still have Michael Wuertz.
  6. I like the 4th year being a player option. It gives Ryan an incentive to perform well in the first 3 years hoping to opt out of the 4th and score one last big contract at 35. I won't cry if he opts out in 3 years because he's performed so well he thinks he can do better. \:D/ Glad to remove one question from the rotation. Now Jimbo, go magically change Jason Marquis into Jake Peavy.
  7. I doubt those draft picks will bring us half the joy that Woody did. Not, but there's something to be said with ending on a high note. I'd rather laugh at some teams misfortune if the last shoe ever drops than deal with the heartbreak of Kerry Wood's contract becoming an albatross to the Cubs. We have enough of those...
  8. Sorry Woody, but I just can't agree with giving you 10 per for 4 or 5 years. I'm a Cubs fan before I'm a Kerry fan. Good luck old friend. This separation would have sucked a lot more in the years before MLB Extra Innings and DVR.
  9. The playoffs are a crapshoot. The only way the Cubs are ever going to finally win a World Series is with consistent appearances. One of these years it will pay off. The reason we've gone 100 years without a Series win is because we've had so few appearances. You aren't going to get very far only making the playoffs once a decade, at best. So I'm pretty happy with Hendry. We've made it two years straight now. I have no reason to think we won't make it again next year. And, as the skit goes, we'll probably lose again. But if we can keep making the playoffs more often than we don't, we will win eventually. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I'm 28 and feel I have many decades to wait it out. :-))
  10. Eh, I'm not quick to throw a guy with a .387 OBP off the boat. Obviously if you can get equivalent value to that on the trade market, sell high. But he's going to be cheap for a while still and isn't the only reason we failed. We weren't winning those first two games no matter how well Theriot or anyone else played.
  11. Barring upgrading from Theriot, next years lineup should be 1. Ryan Theriot 2. Derrek Lee 3. Aramis Ramirez 4. Free Agent who is playing RF or LF 5. Geovany Soto 6. Alfonso Soriano 7. Mark DeRosa 8. Whoever is playing CF 9. Pitcher
  12. Well, the good news is next year we'll probably be right back here taking another kick at the football while Lucy smiles. The bad news is that next year we'll probably be right back here taking another kick at the football while Lucy smiles...
  13. It's getting easier. I don't think I've even shed a tear this time. I guess I figured out in November 2000 that good doesn't always win...
  14. My thoughts 1) Alfonso Soriano as our leadoff hitter must be over and done with. We know you like leading off Fonzie but you're shooting yourself and the team in the foot. Put him wherever down the order makes the best sense for the team next year. 2) Gotta change the outfield. No, the answer isn't to put Fontenot at 2nd and move DeRosa to RF. I think you have to get an impact player. And Soriano moving to RF has to be on the table. Since there isn't much hope of Fukudome not being on the team next year, he needs to be in the CF competition. And you have to find the guts to make him one of the highest paid 4th outfielders in baseball if things go that way. You don't need to blow the team up persay, but you have to acknowledge that we've got our butts kicked twice in a row now. Some things have to change.
  15. I'm Charlie Brown and the Dodgers are Lucy, but I'll be there to fall on my ass tonight (or tomorrow...or Tuesday) like always. There's always hope, but I don't plan on feeling any pain tonight regardless. ..smoke 'em if you got 'em...

  17. Sigh, yeah, they lose me at not free. I'm paying Comcast more than enough for the DVR box that will be recording it in HD.
  18. Cubs fitted cap, Ryne Sandberg replica jersey top, and whichever pair of boxers are next in the drawer. \:D/
  19. Um...are these viewable from, say, work? Because I was planning to work this afternoon. But I could totally ditch that to watch the Brewers lose. :P
  20. I live in Bloomington, Indiana and have never once had a fan from Chicago treat me bad. And we have plenty going to the University. Ran into many in bars. Nobody has ever flinched or stopped talking to me when I tell them I'm a townie. When I walk downtown in my Sandberg jersey no one has ever yelled "YOU'RE NOT A REAL CUBS FAN!". Usually it's "RYNO!!". I guess that means a Cubs fan is a Cubs fan.
  21. I too think that Hoff should have made the roster over Ward, but I don't think it's an earth shattering mistake. Besides, we're fine if we get down to Daryl Ward as our only pinch hitter. We'll probably still have Z available. :D
  22. Every year Uncle Lou is the skipper is another year Dusty Baker cannot somehow become our manager again. I approve.
  23. Sure, they're old. But it isn't like Ernie doesn't have numerous children already and a large family. Even should (God forbid) Ernie kick the bucket the kid will still have a lot of family and a lot of love. Nevermind being adopted by a wealthy couple that will afford it chances in life otherwise impossible. I have nothing against anyone adopting who is capable. I have no interest, so someone else has to do it. I'm for old parents, gay parents, Canadian parents, St. Louis and Milwaukee parents, etc. Screw discrimination.
  24. Congrats to Ernie. It'd be weirder if his wife wasn't so much younger, but if it makes them happy more power to them. Anyway, if there is a God then Ernie Banks should have a lot of life left in him. =D>
  25. Should we meet them in the playoffs, we will have to merge to form Cubastator. http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh143/Wheelimus/cubestator.jpg
