  1. Lol. The Cubs walked away from the previous 2 years of FA with Dansby Swanson, Jameson Taillon, and Seiya Suzuki. Bravo!
  2. What is your point? They signed Dansby Swanson and Jameson Taillon. Does it satisfy you knowing that the 4th largest market in baseball is putting in that kind of effort?
  3. Long term to me isnt 3 years and they only added 1 year to Hoerner they didn't already control. The Cubs could and should be doing a whole lot more than they have been. Saying they spent $20M on Mancini and Barnhart shouldn't be a feather in their cap.
  4. Cubs have been spreading that message for 2 years now. Even Boras was giddy about the Cubs legitimately spending last offseason, turned out all that was regarding was the 1 year deal on Bellinger at near the amount the Dodgers declined to pay. I will say, if Bellinger is looking at 6/150 or so, I would expect the Cubs to be heavily in on that. Because not only does he immediately become your CFer at a decent cost, while PCA continues development at AAA to start the year, that price also makes sense at 1B later.
  5. To be clear, I'm crediting Counsell for getting 9 more wins out of a team that was measurably worse than the Cubs. Everyone wants to talk about the Cubs RD and how close the team is to being a contender. The Cubs and Brewers had the exact same expected W/L of 90-72. The Brewers won 92 games and the Cubs won 83 games. Which team would you say was managed better?
  6. I think the take away would be that is the limitation of a small market team and the Cubs can offer to take him to the next level. The Cubs were 9th in both position and pitching WAR, both higher finishes than the Brewers, yet the Cubs finished 9 games back.
  7. I don't doubt they "seriously want him." The same way 29 other teams "seriously want him." I doubt they will exceed or even come close to matching what the market is willing to offer.
  8. Does Craig Counsell have a history of benching a guy for weeks that just hit a grand slam simply because he was just called up and didn't get us here?
  9. He only predicted Bellinger and Matsui to the Giants. Not sure where you get almost a billion dollars.
  10. The Giants agreed to sign Correa to $350M before they backed out after the physical.
  11. Its more like predicting trends. The Cubs havent shown to be a player in the elite market, so why predict elite FAs to the Cubs? Yamamoto is probably the most realistic of the "elite" FAs to predict as a Cubs signing, but we are still talking about a record setting contract for the Cubs on a guy that hasn't thrown a single pitch in MLB. The guys they predicted as Cubs all fit inside the Cubs trend.
  12. You'll never know what you can get without asking, but outside of an Aaron Judgian level final year, he wont be exceeding Freeman. Freeman was consistently a full WAR better than Alonso leading up to his deal and theres no shot in hell you can sell a team on paying more for Alonso than Freeman now that hes 4-5 WAR better, 3 years removed isnt enough inflation to justify it.
  13. All 30 teams have scouted these pitchers. I dont recall anyone outside of Wrigleyville suggesting the Cubs as a destination for Yamamoto. The same cant be said for Imanaga.
  14. There has been more smoke around the Cubs and Imanaga. He more likely fits the profile in that hes going to get a modest deal while every other big fish is wooing Yamamoto.
  15. The Mets have Vientos. I can't imagine they have much interest in trading a 1B/DH for a 25 year old 1B/DH prospect when they have a 23 year old 1B/DH prospect already on the 40 man taking swings in MLB.
  16. Pumping the brakes early. Never too early to get ahead of the rumors.
  17. Depends if Counsell loses the clubhouse like Maddon did. The team stopped caring after they won the WS because the manager let them.
  18. Not in a thread about hiring Counsell. However, if you look in the thread about offseason stuff, I'm betting you'll see it mentioned.
  19. Who cares about how much money the manager makes? His salary affects nothing.
  20. I suppose this is what happens when you constantly call for bunts and your boss doesn't like the philosophy of playing for 1 run, not playing call ups that were called up because the player on the MLB roster wasnt producing but they were a veteran and need to be shown respect even in the face of catastrophic failure, and going to the same bullpen arms that have blown 3 straight leads. Unlucky. Enjoy forced retirement, Ross.
  21. Damn near all of the production the Cubs got out of 1B was Bellinger.
  22. I highly doubt Ricketts is that involved in how or where the budget is allocated. It's Hoyers decision where that $30M goes. So far he has chosen to put it into 2 or 3 mediocre players over one great player.
  23. I don't buy for one second that Ricketts is the driving force behind not signing a 10 year deal. Ricketts is a business man. He of all people understands investments. There is no chance he believes that signing one of these guys to a 10 year deal is a bad investment. If you look at all of the mega contracts in history and compare it to what teams are paying on a per WAR basis, there is only 1 that comes out as a surplus off the top of my head and that's Max Scherzers deal with the Nationals. Yet with all of the evidence to suggest that no matter how good the player is, they aren't worth the money, then why do teams continue to pay them more and more? Because to the owners it doesn't matter how they perform on the field. What matters is how much revenue they bring in and they all understand that someone like Ohtani is going to bring in his entire contract in revenue by like year 3. On the other hand, Hoyer's job is on the line with these decisions. If Ricketts is willing to sign off on 6-7 years at $35M/year, then there is not shot that he wouldn't sign off on 10 years at $30M. Because a dollar today is worth more than a dollar a tomorrow. So while Ricketts would sign off on something because in the end his bank account will grow no matter what, Hoyer has to keep producing to keep his job.
  24. You do understand the irony of suggesting the Cubs will do something they have never done and avoided doing while at the same time suggesting teams are steering away from doing it, right? Because your post implies you don't.
  25. The majority of teams cant afford to tie up big money in a player at 18+. We have gone exactly 0 offseasons without a 10+ year contract. It will always be the minority of teams making those offers because only the minority can cover the cost and still field a competitive team. Contracts are going up, not down. There's nothing to suggest it's going in the opposite direction.
