  1. Even if you put Hoskins in that 2nd package over Candelario/Turner it's still skewed for #1. For year 1 in those packages, #1 has the better premium hitter and the better secondary hitter while potentially being a wash in pitching. For year 2, #1 has the better pitching and #2 doesnt even have a hitter. And with package 1 you have better prospects to fill in the blanks.
  2. Package 1 and its not even close really. In package 1 I have Ohtani til retirement, presumably, Imanaga on a 3-4 year deal who gets just as good if not better reviews on his pitches than Yamamoto, and 1 year of Alonso. In package 2 the only long term asset is Yamamoto.
  3. Morel reads a fly ball as well as the kids in the outfield at the HR derby.
  4. The Padres will probably try and throw in a contract with Soto, like Cronenworth, and they'll still probably get a bigger return than what people think is fair simply because its Juan Soto and there's no shortage of teams that will be intrigued by a 1 year shot with him in the lineup. Cronenworth hit .288 as a 2B last year. If he was getting lumped into the deal then the Red Sox really stand out. They were second worst in baseball at the position, they can obviously afford Soto, and they are looking to unload Verdugo.
  5. His name was only ever mentioned along side the other 3 SS's because the Cubs were going to be "aggressive" in FA while "spending intelligently." I seem to recall leading up to the Correa announcement that a lot of people were getting excited about the Cubs landing him, to then ultimately sign Swanson a week later. I guess the positive to take away this year would be that "aggressive" has yet to be attached to "intelligent spending." So just mayyyyyyyyybe, they are willing to be a little stupid this year.
  6. Chiefs fans were flying banners and blacking out their stadium the year before Andy Reid came along and he took a reject 49ers QB and won 11 games with a team that was 2-14 the year before. Don't try and act like he's not a winning coach.
  7. You haven't made a clear argument for anything. Your argument is Donald Trump leaning into the mic and saying, "Wrong." And you back it up with "I don't care. It doesn't matter."
  8. Acting like managers are equal and make very little impact on a team is a hilariously dumb take. They all need good players to win, but the best managers win with those players when they have them. Every sport has those legendary managers/coaches that have dominated their sport. Joe Torre Tony LaRussa Terry Francona Andy Reid Phil Jackson Pep Guardiola If it was so easy to replicate, then Dave Roberts would have 3 or 4 rings by now instead of the 1 he has in a shortened season, because the Dodgers have had arguably the best team in baseball for a decade now.
  9. Under Hoyer, have the Cubs ever had a player leak out that they are all in on and then actually sign? I can't really think of any. They haven't really signed many top tier quality players but even the ones they have signed that were relatively at the top like Marcus Stroman fell out of thin air. I don't even recall anything on Swanson. He simply just fit the 6-7 year self imposed cutoff Hoyer implemented and was the last of the available shortstops when the Cubs signed him like a week after it was announced the Giants signed the guy everyone was teasing the Cubs were pushing for.
  10. Think of all the money they could save for what matters if they just let the players decide with rock-paper-scissors!
  11. While the rest want to believe the Cubs wasted money on a worthless position and didn't upgrade the clubhouse.
  12. Both statements can be true, you know? The Cubs have done well at SS. The Cubs would be doing better with Seager. It's not my fault you choose to take something that was said and infer something completely unrelated. You'll have to forgive me since Fangraphs seems to be struggling right now and I can't get the exact numbers, but for about $7M more towards the LT, Seager brought in about 2 more WAR on the year. Would you say that would be a good return on investment? None of that is to suggest that Swanson is a bad player, mind you, since that's what you are trying to claim I said.
  13. And yet we've gone from Castro to Russell (winning the WS) to Baez to Hoerner to Swanson. I'd say we've faired pretty good.
  14. Both teams had injuries. I seem to recall the Brewers pitching rotation getting decimated by injuries early in the year. Brandon Woodruff pitched only 67 innings. Regardless of injuries, more WAR is more WAR. The Brewers were closer to a replacement level team than the Cubs and the Cubs won 9 games less. A gap like that is the difference of Ross blowing 4 games and Counsell not.
  15. I don't know how much Ross made, but Francona at $4.5M was the highest paid manager in the sport. So with that in mind, it's safe to assume the Cubs are paying Counsell at least 200% of what Ross was getting. That's not tiny.
  16. You mean after they traded Castro?
  17. How about this then... The Cubs made Counsell the highest paid manager by a wide margin and fired a guy they said was safe a few weeks ago without blinking. Does that not paint a picture for who baseball lifers believe is magnitudes better at his job?
  18. I could not care less about a Pythagorean record. It was simply another way of wording the difference between the Cubs and Brewers, because saying the Brewers won 9 more games with a team that was worth less WAR with position players and pitching wasn't getting the point across.
  19. Agreed. Like trade Alcantara for something that better fits the needs of the MLB roster.
  20. I dont need to talk my way out of it. Alcantara is going to run out of options a full year before any kind of spot is open. He's trade bait no matter how much you wish it wasnt true. He'll be in a trade package soon.
  21. How many outfielders would you like? Canario is already on the bench/DHing.
  22. What I've wanted out of the Cubs started before last offseason. It's like some people forget that the Cubs have been "not rebuilding" for 3, going on 4, years. They've avoided some of the best players in the game simply because they were attached to a QO. How would you feel about the Cubs right now if Freeman was at 1B? How about Seager at SS? Insert any number of pitchers that have been better than Marcus Stroman and Jameson Taillon.
  23. The chances Alcantara debuts in the MLB on the Cubs is pretty damn slim. Assuming PCA doesn't face plant at the plate, Alcantara has no spot on the roster. The corners are locked down for 3 years with players that have NTC's and CF is going to be taken up by PCA. Alcantara is going to be out of options by the time a spot is even capable of opening up for him. He's the most obvious trade bait prospect the Cubs have.
  24. They've given us those already. They owe us Bryant/Rizzo now. They've built a team of side dishes that is missing the main course.
