  1. The pitching should help Ohtani add a bit of value in the 2nd half. I hope PCA wins.
  2. Shaw has very likely been unlucky that all his terrible contact hasn't resulted in more of them falling in for hit. That said, he's still hitting badly. Problem is there's nobody better to replace him with. I don't think it will do much of anything to demote him. The Cubs lost several games last season based on the bad performances they got out of the 3B and catcher spots. If Shaw doesn't start hitting by the deadline they need to acquire someone, maybe even sooner They're at -0.5 WAR out of 3B this year. You can leave a rookie out there struggling for a few months but at some point you've got to worry about winning. Brewers are on their heels, and the playoffs is no place for development. Jed's job is also on the line, I'd be more worried about getting in the playoffs if I were him.
  3. I 100% blame the bench and rotation on ownership for slashing payroll. I think Jed has done about as good as you can hope with the team. Even the pen was cobbled together from dumpster dives and the discount rack. I do think we should avoid older position players where possible. Berti and Turner have had small samples, but them sucking isn't exactly unpredictable. Brujan is versatile at sucking. At least all the catchers have been working out.
  4. Probably true. Cubs seem to value guys who have command, which is much less teachable, whereas you can always teach a guy a new grip. Defense can't defend against walks. Guys with lots of Ks and low BB cost a lot of money, and the Cubs don't seem to invest in elite pitching.
  5. I think maybe Berry wanted to direct him if/where to slide? I don't get these 3b coaches running all over the foul line. If I'm a baserunner running toward 3b I'd like to know to exactly where the 3b coach will be every single time instead of having to search for him. PCA definitely didn't know the throw was coming to 3b, maybe he expected it going to home. Still should slide though. Not sure Berry is gonna be around next year.
  6. Wicks will be as good as his fastball. For whatever reason we can't develop good fastballs for our young SP, they always get pounded. Even Steele's i imagine was more of a fluke. All our young SP have very good secondaries but guys just sit on the FB and rake. Even Wesneski was the same. Mystifying that Horton's fastball gets clobbered with the sharp cutting action on it. Hopefully that improves.
  7. Could give Horton some rest too in Iowa.
  8. Was looking at the stats of our relievers. They're a solid group but there's almost certainly going to be some significant regression there at some point. The HR/FB is very low. For most of our key guys they've given up zero HR or close to it. Those ERAs are going to come up.
  9. If Steele didn't get hurt you wonder how long they would have stayed with Brown until replacing him with Rea. Mid-May at the latest i think.
  10. I hope they find a SP who is at least controllable through next year. I'd have no issue parting with quality prospects then. I imagine it all comes down to the offers Jed gets. But there's gotta be a ton of teams who will be looking for SP. He always makes smart trades so i'm not worried there, rarely if ever overpays. Nice we have a lot of young SP depth on the Cubs but the problem is their performance is so unreliable, we don't even know what results to expect from them yet. At least with a guy like Rea you know you're getting about 4.50 ERA and some length.
  11. I'll say PCA since he's been out in CF every day even through the heat wave, and probably had a small lead over Tucker in WAR at the game 81 mark. Agree with @Bertz, props to Kelly when this team was sizzling through a tough schedule in April.
  12. I could see them parting with Long or Triantos since they're blocked and their upside is a bit limited. One of Cassie or Alcantara can probably be had for a player with control beyond this season. SP are at a premium these days so i'd keep Brown. I'm always very hesitant to make future seasons weaker to make half a season stronger.
  13. Yeah I suspect the Dbacks will wait close to the deadline to chose whether to sell. Would be a nice player to get though. Doesn't play 1B though. Annoying that every deadline we're trading for a 3b.
  14. Most baserunning runs in the MLB though, plus a top 5 defense (we're 2nd in baserunning and 4th in defense per FG)
  15. What about the choo-choo train? Wouldn't a space ship lifting off be a better idea for the "Astros"? At least they got rid of the ankle- breaking device in CF.
  16. Maybe Altuve would have 8 career HR if he didn't pay in that park hahaha
  17. Crazy thing is he's on an 8 WAR pace with i believe the highest chase rate in the league if not MLB.
  18. Hindsight is 20/20. I think Taillon struck out Altuve the 2 previous ABs, I don't have an issue with the move. Pitching in air conditioning means the high pitch count isn't a huge deal as a one-off to save the pen a bit
  19. They seem to overachieve every year so you can never count them out. Seems like Counsell didn't quite bring the magic sauce with him from MIL.
