  1. I don't think Jed operates much differently than Theo did in FA. I think if a 25-26 year old 5 WAR player like Heyward came along again Jed would have no issues signing him to a longterm deal just like he did Swanson if it was a good price. Swanson was 4 years older than Heyward when he signed for 7 years. The Cubs must have something around 60 million in payroll still left under the LT and I expect they'll likely spend it like last year. Yamamoto seems quite talented but comes with more risk than Heyward IMO because he has never pitched in the MLB, so we'll see I guess what Jed does there. I'll be satisfied if they acquire any TORP. I'm not convinced Imanaga is a TORP.
  2. Putting one of our best athletes at 1B longterm seems like a bit of a waste, and they're not going to block PCA. It's totally possible that Hoskins can put up as good offensive numbers at 1B next year as Bellinger will. Note that I like Bellinger a lot as a player. 5 tool guy. I also like the idea of Hoskins in order to give Mervis another shot.
  3. Oh man, another bottleneck.
  4. Sounds like he was in the city, probably for contract talks. I doubt the Cubs resign him, the fit isn't great.
  5. Fun fact: the Cubs had the 11th best WAR in the MLB out of the 3B position last season. This was shocking. Madrigal had a 98 wRC+ while he played 3B., Candelario only had about 98 PA as a 3B for us.
  6. Guess it depends where they plan to play Morel and what they do at 1b and DH. Don't really want Madrigal or Wisdom at 3b either.
  7. I don't really see Polanco as an upgrade to Morel at 3b overall. Unless Morel just plays DH or 1B. I'm interested to see what they do at DH. Belt seems a bit old for Jed. Maybe Mitch Garver? He might get a multi-year deal though.
  8. Now Ohtani has enough money to buy the Dodgers
  9. 100 Mancini's is -80 WAR haha
  10. They're not paying for just baseball skills, but revenue he'll bring into the team. But that's a lot of money lol
  11. Is this wait worse than waiting for the Kris Bryant grievance decision and then COVID happened?
  12. Maybe the Jays brought in the Shark Tank guy to close that deal.
  13. I honestly have no idea. Maybe? Would you give him a 12 year deal at 55m AAV if he's worth 1-3 WAR annually over his first 6 years and 8-10 WAR over his last 6 years?
  14. So is he flying to Toronto to announce the deal? And then having sushi with Kikuchi and Co (who was dumb enough to make reservations in his name)?
  15. I said TORP for 6-7 years. 30 y/o TORPs like Nola etc are signing for 6-7 years. Yamamoto will probably get around 10, which is fine given the age. Soto, Harper etc get 10+ which is fine too given the age.
  16. That's a bit much. The right deal I have no issue with. If the Cubs like Yamamoto, or maybe Ohtani, or Soto next year. Or they could get some other TORP on 6 or 7 years. They'll probably only carry one mega contract so make it a good one, maximize the prime years etc I don't think having a "star" is the right focus anyways. The win column doesn't care about "stars". We need wins. We have holes at SP, 3B, 1B, CF, so-so catchers and a mediocre pen, there's lots of room to spend and improve.
  17. He'll be 31. If he were a year or 2 younger you could look at signing him. Fangraphs crowd-sourcing has him at 4/80, and they've been fairly accurate so far.
  18. You can live with 1/3 of the contract being lame at the end. It might happen with Swanson. You'd probably be singing a different tune if Lester signed for 10 years and was still on the payroll next season so Jed couldn't afford someone like Yamamoto or Glasnow this year, or Swanson last year and this year, or whomever. Increase the Cubs payroll by 60 million and you'd still be eating 28 million worth of wins/talent from the team because of Lester's contract. If Jed thinks e.g. Yamamoto is good enough to be worth 10/300 and worth the risk of never pitching in the MLB then he'll go for it IMO. We'll probably never agree on this, so agree to disagree. I just don't think the short-term dopamine hit of signing a "star" is worth a mega-contract very likely being terrible 5 years from now and dealing with half a decade of worse teams.
  19. Jed has stated time and again that their goal is to sign good contracts and make good transactions, and if you do that year after year you will be successful. He doesn't target 1 or 2 guys he NEEDS to have in the offseason and sign "no matter the cost", he targets a bunch of good players they like and signs the guy who is the best value contract. He signed Suzuki, Stroman, Swanson, Bellinger etc and those were good contracts. Taillon may also turn out to be a good contract, and was at the time it was signed. He extended Happ and Nico. He just nabbed us the best manager in baseball for the cost of a 1 WAR player but without adding to the payroll under the LT. Besides Mancini and a meh Smyly deal, he's spending our money wisely. Swanson and Bellinger were 2 of the best contracts signed last offseason and everyone was crying about missing on Bogaerts and Turner. Those contracts suck. Does he get credit for passing on Abreu, Rodon, DeGrom, Correa, Verlander, Conforto, Bell, Vazquez? I agree we should be over the LT this year and if we aren't the blame should be on Ricketts.
  20. Jed speaks:. Everyone here will be thrilled: https://www.bleachernation.com/cubs/2023/12/07/jed-hoyer-speaks-where-things-stand-winning-the-offseason-a-window-of-moments-and-more/
  21. Exactly. Cubs were tied for best baserunning runs in the MLB. Also were 6th in runs scored and 3rd in NL behind Dodgers and Braves is pretty good.
  22. If it helps....as long as the Cubs are not signing anyone major it seems they can still be in the Ohtani hunt.
  23. Discussions with agents of Ohtani, Soto, Bellinger, Belt, Candelario (switch hitter)?
