  1. Why hasn't Willson Contreras been playing 1b for Venezuela? He hurt? They have Arraez there.
  2. But if they told him he could pitch then why be cagey,? Just say yes
  3. My thinking is Counsell might have been cagey any whether he was allowed to pitch tonight because they may have told Venezeula not to pitch him and Counsell didn't want people to get angry at him/Cubs for that decision in case he's not even needed tonight. Just a guess though
  4. Counsell said they talked with Venezuela manager today. Palencia wants to pitch badly. Cagey no comment from Counsell on whether he'd be able to pitch tonight.
  5. Counsell said Seiya played catch today and not shut down from anything. Not shut down from hitting either because no structural damage just pain from swelling but he probably won't start hitting until the weekend.
  6. It seemed they gave up more than they hit but holy crap
  7. Guardians announcers mentioned the ball has been flying out of every cactus league park the Guardians have played at this Spring. Good to know not just the Cubs pitchers lol. They said temperatures have also been well-above seasonal and the warmest anyone can ever remember since teams have started playing ST games in AZ. They said it's so warm its like the weather is 2 months ahead of schedule.
  8. Looked it up, batters hit .115 BA/.154 SLG with 48% whiff% on his change last year.
  9. Counsell this afternoon said Seiya was getting an MRI today. Hopefully we know more tomorrow. A reporter asked if he were possibly starting the season on the IL regardless but he said he'll wait for the MRI before decisions are made.
  10. ABS stats this spring show that only 52% of ABS challenges have been successful. 44% for hitters and 59% for catchers, who have a better view than umps. If fans didn't have the K- zone box on TV and tried to call a game we'd probably all be a lot worse. They have a tough job like you said. Balls are moving through the zone too. That pitch looked like a ball, but as people have shown with ABS, any 12-6 breaking ball at the bottom of the zone will show up on K-zone very differently depending if you're measuring the K zone on the front of the plate or middle. They've shown how a curveball clipping the bottom-front of the zone can end up in the dirt. And imagine having a job where hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions in some cases like this, are ready to jump down your throat when you make an error at work. People seeking perfection will have their wish over the next several decades as most of our jobs can/will be replaced by machines. People will disagree and that's fine but I'm on team human.
  11. Maybe ump thought the breaking ball clipped the zone. Pitching on both teams was sick.
  12. Maybe they also want to break up the velo RHP and finesse guys.
  13. I want a pair of those padded batting gloves that Shaw has. They look comfy cozy
  14. 91.6mph avg today. 92.3 avg all of last year.
  15. Wonder what his velo was last year 1st half vs 2nd half. Or the last month or 2
  16. Half his pitches have been balls so clearly he's not on today. Not the time to panic yet. He's a command guy and if he's off then he doesn't have the stuff to get away with it. Velo still down a tick today. If he puts up around a 4.50 ERA/xFIP this year they should be happy with that as a #5. Let's just hope Shota does ok.
  17. Hopefully just a bruise. Counsell said today that Rojas is fine after yesterday, just left for precaution.
  18. I think Steven Kwan is 1st. When you count guys who move around like Soto, Happ is still 6th. Among all OF he's 15th. He's very consistent and almost never gets injured.
  19. Happ has put up the 2nd most WAR at LF the last 3-4 seasons and the 11th best OF. Most people like HR they don't care about walks or consistency and defense is often overlooked.
  20. AZ is weird, let's see how bad Jamo looks in the season. Given injury frequency, if Brown keeps looking good we'll see him in the rotation eventually anyways.
  21. Kinda sucks for the WBC players that they lose a few weeks to practice the ABS system before the season.
  22. I feel like California should just have its own team
  23. Wow that 3B for Canada really blew those throws. At some point this game is going to be a spanking for USA. PCA just missed another HR.
  24. From Counsell sounds like the plan is to rotate Shaw around the diamond to let regulars get some rest at DH. Yeah doubtful to see Mo in Iowa. But if everyone is healthy it's an option for the Cubs if they want to keep certain guys for depth.
  25. Cubs will certainly carry the max 13 pitchers so on OD there will be 4 bench players, plus whoever is DH'ing that day. Amaya as 2nd catcher leaves 3 spots. Ballesteros is likely to be in that DH spot most games. With Shaw getting so much work in OF it'll be interesting to see if they go with Shaw + 1 INF + 1 OF or Shaw + 2 OF. They really only need 1 bench OF besides Shaw. I could see maybe Kingery + Conforto as the final 2 bench spots. There's just no playing time for 2 bench OF plus Shaw. They may want to keep Conforto for his bat and insurance for Mo even if Carlson is hitting well in ST but still hasn't been showing power. If the Cubs like Carlson they could DH Conforto and add Carlson as 4th OF and put Mo in AAA to work on catching since he has options. Unless Carlson is ok with Iowa.
