  1. Well i think they said Shaw had to earn it last year spring too lol
  2. Also not sure if you guys saw Dansbys recent interview but he's been working on some approach changes over the offseason (he was vague). Sharma/Mooney said he's going to try to hit the ball more to CF rather than selling out so much to pull. So potentially sacrifice some HR in favor of cutting down on K's. Dansby not happy having to hit near the bottom of the lineup last year so wants to change that.
  3. Don't know where to put this but I got around to watching the Hoyer/Hawkins presser when camp opened a week ago and they mentioned that Shaw is likely to see starts in the field to shift different regulars to DH to get them some time off their feet. Jed also said Mo will have go earn his spot on the roster. I would think it's most likely Mo makes it and gets starts at DH vs RHP and Shaw starts in the field vs LHP and shifts someone to DH.
  4. What was it at? Edit: checked statcast he was 90-91. Touched 92 a couple times. Yeah could just be early,, doesnt mean much...yet.
  5. Read that catchers were more accurate at challenges than pitchers
  6. I think I read the challenge success rate in ST last year was around 50%
  7. Will be interesting to see how the ABS system will be used by players since teams only get 2 challenges per game and pitcher/catcher or batter can use them, but not on the direction of the dugout. I'd think they'd save them for high leverage situations like with men on base. Will players fight over them? Will some more emotional/ competitive players use them more? Will that make other players or the manager PO'd?
  8. Might as well just wait closer to the trade deadline, leverage still high for the Cubs
  9. B- overall. Ownership gets a D for being no less than 3rd or 4th in revenue and 9th in payroll in a year where they need to go for it. Given the payroll he has to work with Hoyer gets a B+. Could increase if he's able to sign some good extensions, hopefully one of Nico/Seiya. Hoyer did a very good job not spending a lot of money on near-replacement players unlike seasons past so could spend them it on good players. Cabrera might have been the best option given the FA SP options. Cease seems like a bit of an overpay, velo is down on Suarez, Imai might be overrated etc. Putting big money in a SP is very risky anyways, so Cabrera is solid enough. 22m for Imanaga isn't great but not the worst contract ever. Bregman is 32 but a good player. Not an elite bat but still good. I think the bat is a bit overrated due to Astros/Red Sox bandboxes for RHB. Not that fond of the contract but should help us a lot the next couple of years at least. Rebuilt a good pen with a ton of holes. Could have signed a true closer but the blame is on Ricketts.
  10. His fastball got pummeled last year so adding a fb with movement is hopeful. Developing the changeup would be good too.
  11. That's about the worst non-illegal thing someone could do...
  12. Cowles was terrible last year as a 25 year old in AAA. His value is low right now, not worth worrying about a 40-man slot for. If he stays in the org that's cool but can be replaced.
  13. Cubs might need to give their top prospects some seminars on how to avoid bad PR
  14. It's a small win for Gallen compared to the QO. I read that 14m is deferred so that would help him on taxes i assume.
  15. If the Cubs see him as a DH only there's no way IMO they refuse to trade him like they have. Huge difference in value for him as a C than DH obviously.
  16. Nifty idea. Mo could catch Boyd given how well he holds runners. I assume they also want to break in Mo for next season since Kelly will be gone. Amaya/Mo next year at catcher?
  17. Gallen has a QO attached. Could he even get a 1/22m deal at this point? Or at any point? He probably should have just taken the QO because he likely wants that 1-year opt-out anyways. Besides Shota he's the weakest of the FA SP this year who had a QO. He or his agent effed up. If he wants any kind of longterm deal he might have to accept a contract similar or worse than what Taillon got, who didn't have a QO attached. Would Cubs even be in on that? Bregman didn't have a QO so it's a big cost for Gallen with the QO.
  18. No surprise offseason injury news from the Cubs. ST off to a good start.
  19. You're right, I accidentally looked at the wrong team. Lame payroll, let's sign Gallen now.
  20. That's what fangraphs LT payroll page estimate says.
  21. Yeah most likely right, unless some deal falls into their lap they can't pass up. LT payroll is at 265m so hard to see Tom wanting to keep pushing
  22. Edmonds was amazing, he could catch anything he got to, i'm not sure of his overall range though due to not amazing footspeed. PCA obviously has him beat there. Andruw Jones was so natural and smooth and perfect body control. Best OF catch ever is IMO the Gary Matthews Jr HR robbery in Texas, followed by Jim Edmonds' backwards-catching the ball over his head in a full dive
  23. That's a really good point. And having a TORP is even more important in the playoffs so the timing of Steele's return works fine for us. However, we also don't know exactly how effective/rusty he'll be this year and he might be on a bit of a leash with pitch counts.
