  1. Not sure what you mean by top guy. I don’t think they need a #1 type guy. I think a second pitcher being a rental would be ok. Kelly, Lugo sort of guy. Or a guy who has control left but isn’t as established like Cabrera or Soriano of the Angels. It would be great to get a guy like Gore or some other TOR starter, but I don’t see it happening. Maybe Alcantara, but I am. It sure where he fits in a rotation. TOR/MOR?
  2. I can agree with that. Keller isn’t my favorite either. But he is better than Rea and probably Horton too, right now. Plus maybe he limits some innings for Horton. And if they add another pitcher at the deadline like Alcantara or someone else with control they could trade Keller next year.
  3. I am not really worried about the Cardinals. But the Brewers do worry me. They can absolutely win upped 80’s this year. They can pitch, field and run. For some reason they are always good.
  4. Be happy they won yesterday. Today does not look good. Hope I am proven wrong.
  5. I would be perfectly fine with adding him. He is signed through 2028. Basically they can trade for him, use him half a year and get back similar prospects in the off season. Means you get a MOR starter without depleting the system. Leaves them the ability to add someone else. Or if they want to keep him he is a decent MOR starter who perhaps the Cubs pitching lab can get a bit more out of, for a reasonable salary for a few years.
  6. Again, I am not saying they get him. I just disagree with those who think the plan was him only here one year and then give him some ridiculous contract offer. They know what is needed and I think they will be aggressive it getting it done. Doesn’t mean they get him. And I also think they can go head to head with any team and offer a similar contract.
  7. What is really sad about the lockout is the biggest issue isn’t even the players arguing with ownership. It is ownership arguing with ownership on what is best for the majority of owners. You expect players and owners wanting different things and then meeting in the middle. I am not suggesting that isn’t an issue. It is. But it is a normal issue. Owners who can’t agree with other owners on how the game moves forward just makes negotiations even more complicated.
  8. I said I don’t think he would have even allowed the trade if he didn’t think they could get him long term. I do think he doesn’t want the bad press he will get if he then let him walk. I also think he will be very aggressive. And if he thought they could get him long term he has to know the money would be what it will be. He has offered over $400M once already. On a guy who would not come here. Tucker may be that special person he does go all in on. I think he is. That said, still not easy to sign him. I just disagree with those who act like it is a forefone conclusion the cubs will never sign him. I think they have a decent shot.
  9. I think I did say he is having a solid year. In fact in the post you quoted I said that very thing.
  10. True. But maybe Houston wanted Smith. We don’t know. And perhaps in the end people will be happy they have Shaw instead of Smith.
  11. Does. Nico hitting 2 homers in 8 AB in this park diminish the HR totals of the Astros? I mean Nico has 2 homers in Houston.
  12. I don’t sense hate. Just because some fans aren’t going to induct him into the HOF off of a decent start in the majors doesn’t mean anyone hates him. I don’t want him to do well in this series, because he is playing the Cubs. Other than that, I really don’t give him much thought. He has been solid this year. Good for him.
  13. Yep, didn’t mean to respond to you specifically. Shouldn’t have quoted you.
  14. Maybe Thursday was the heat. But the other 3 games were night games. I know they were hot too. But Cardinals are not drawing like they did previously. Hot or not they would have normally had 40,000+. They barely had 30,000 at the most attended game.
  15. Doesn’t matter. Cubs are not taking that contract and him back.
  16. I think it is a huge difference. I also think if Ricketts didn’t intend on being aggressive with Tucker to retain him he wouldn’t have okayed the trade. That said. I would say the Cubs have maybe a 35 to 40% chance of keeping him. Which is pretty good. It is easy to say team A will not sign player A any FA year. I would guess you would be right 80% of the time. He most likely won’t take a discount. I agree with that. But contracts are very complicated. If he likes Chicago he might be willing to work with the team to get a deal he can accept. And from Ricketts POV, it is harder to explain to fans how you lost a guy on your team who you wanted to keep than it is to tell your fanbase you tried on a particular guy from another team but he just didn’t want to play for Chicago or he just chose another team.
  17. But Lugo is lucky so he can’t be good.
  18. Agreed. Not opposed to adding a right handed bat. But pitching comes first.
  19. I am not just using that logic with Smith. You are right, Shaw may never make it. But 200 AB doesn’t tell me unequivocally that Smith will be a star and Shaw a bust. I also agree that right now Smith’s stock is going up while Shaw is going down. Wasn’t there a time the Sox wouldn’t trade Robert for PCA? How is that working now? It really doesn’t matter if a guys trade value is up or down when they aren’t looking to be traded anyway. No difference than your home value going up when you have no intention of selling. I also don’t disagree with getting Suarez to play 3rd this year. But I think adding pitching is more important. I wouldn’t object to adding Suarez. But that doesn’t mean I am giving up on Shaw.
  20. Also an option. Maybe bat AND pitching.
  21. I get it, and understand. But even if it isn’t flipped tonight, that doesn’t mean long term it won’t be. This idea that Smith is obviously better (a future star) than Shaw because after 250 AB he is better is dumb. Steve Sax won ROY the year Sandberg came up. Who had a better career? Jerome Walton won ROY. How did that turn out? MLB is filled with guys who start good and end up ok or even not very good. And also with guys who start slower and become stars. Yes, it is frustrating to see right now. But what is happening now doesn’t really have any bearing on how Shaw or Smith end up. It can change as fast as the next 100AB. Maybe not today, however.
  22. I know that. That is why I didn’t like the idea. But they did it. I am not arguing that is was a good idea. It wasn’t. But now that they did do it, there are no excuses for adding whoever they want. I am just not sure they add that much payroll anyway. BUT THEY COULD!
  23. But, but, but….. Smith? How does that happen????? He is obviously going to be a superstar, right? I mean he is hitting .270 with OPS of .750. And a rookie. Has to be a star, right? I mean how many guys do that and then bust????. I would guess less than 70% right? So 30% become decent players. Those are great odds, right. Yep, he has to be a star and Shaw has to suck. Cubs have to be stupidly. They always are, right???
  24. I can almost guarantee there will not be a massive trade to improve the offense.
