    Yep, you can add him to the lower cost, rental pitcher to eat innings and lengthen your rotation.

    Your comment was send him down and bring someone else up from AAA. While I side with Jason and those who feel he needs time here, I do at least understand your frustration with him in the line up. But where you really lost me was suggesting sending someone else up, as if that someone would be any better in the line up. And he would undoubtedly be worse on the field. I assume that someone would be Long. Are his AAA numbers any better than what Shaw’s were? And he is clearly not as good a fielder. If/when Shaw gets replaced, this year, it needs to be by someone they traded for. And I am not sure they even have to do that. But I do understand why you do.

    I get that. And I am not saying they shouldn’t give Long a chance, at some point. But the comment I responded to was “Long’s bat is major league ready”. Personally I don’t think he will be very good from the start.

    I think he will be extended soon. I also am not afraid of losing top prospects, as long as it is for a guy or guys who have years left before hitting FA.

    For me,” all in” means all players are available. I don’t think it means get a particular player or players. That is too hard to figure out. But if I was to suggest players, it would look like one of Gore, Cabrera or Ryan plus one of Gallen, Kelly or Lugo, then a bat to play 3rd and/or be a bench bat, and a pen arm. But all that would absolutely gut the system.

    Just looked at the standing. While we were discussing the advantage of adding Bregman it came to my attention the Red Aoz have won 6 in a row and are 4 games over .500 and tied for the last WC spot. Has me doubting Bregman is even worth discussing.

    For all the doomsday talk that goes on around here, we do need to remember the Cubs are 16 games over .500 and in the running for the best record in the NL. They cannot help what the Brewers are doing. Normal expectation would be the Cubs would be at least 5 games in 1st now if they were 16 games over. I think we probably all need to take a breath and relax a little. I doubt the Brewers continue to play .700 ball, like they have done the past 40 games. And if they do, there is nothing the Cubs can do about it. Cubs are a good team. We should be very happy where their record stands.

    I think the Cubs got very lucky on Boyd and Kelly, a little lucky on Rea, very lucky on several pen arms and unlucky on Turner. I think it is not unreasonable to have thought he would be a decent bench bat. So him and whoever wasn’t catching would have been an ok start to the bench. They did need to get someone better than either Berti or Brujan. But I do agree with you that they had enough money to do more.

    We pretty much agree on what we think will happen. I think definitely a starting pitcher will be added. I also think an upgrade at 3rd/bench will be added. Not a major upgrade. The question comes in as to what else, if anything? Pen arm, second starter or a bigger upgrade to the line up? 🤷 Whatever it is I hope it is enough.

    How many guys whose bat is ready at AAA fail when they first come up? How many times does it have to happen before some people realize it is a huge jump from AAA to the majors. There were people here who swore Shaw’s bat was ready. How is that going? This is not to suggest Shaw is a bust. It is just saying expecting a guy from AAA to come up and hit from the start and never stop hitting is very unrealistic.

    Honestly, if that did happen I would guess the Cubs got a controlled pitcher back, who is pretty good. That would also mean the Cubs have pretty decent money to spend elsewhere. Which could bring them Suarez or Schwarber or someone else for the everyday line up. While I wouldn’t like that scenerio, I don’t think it is that doomsday. I also think because of so many teams making the playoffs, teams are not deciding to sell yet. And any that are, right now are probably asking way too much.

    I understand what Bregman does. But the Cubs only have so many assets to deal. Because they have a very good offense already, even with Shaw, I would put the bulk of my assets towards pitching. As I said, maybe add a bat who can play 3rd but doesn’t cost a lot. (Assets, not money)

    I will say I agree he is NOT a gold glove outfielder. I am not sure he is below average. This is not to say he is good. I think he is just average. I don’t really feel he misplays many, but I agree he doesn’t seem to make nice plays either. IMO, he is ok. Definitely not GG.

    The problem is with 3 wild card teams in each league no team wants to believe they aren’t in the race on July 10th. A mini streak and they are back in it. So teams are not selling until last minute. There is nothing the Cubs can do about it except work with the few teams who are obviously out of it. But that cost is probably very high right now.

    You suggest only MOR starters are available and then suggest the Cubs should go after Bregman when none of us has any idea who is truly available and who will be available later. Do we know Gore isn’t available? Is Alcantara or Cabrera better than a MOR starter? Gallen? Maybe he turned the corner. I would be fine with guys like Gallen, Kelly, Lugo, Keller, Cabrera, Gore, Ryan, Alcantara, etc…. The real problem here is some of those guys might not even be available. Which is the same issue with suggesting Bregman and Suarez(who you didn’t mention, but many have). I realize 3rd base is a need. However, with the 3rd baseman they already have they are a top 3 offense in baseball. I don’t see them spending big time assets to get a stud there. I am thinking their sites are lower there, like Moncada, Urias, Castro, etc… But again, who is available? I think the bulk of their prospect assets should go towards 2 pitchers. Just have no idea who is available.

    Even with a loss today the Cubs are one game from the best record in the NL with what apparently you feel is a team that is very flawed and can’t possibly win in the playoffs. They are 16 games over .500 with this apparently bad team. I think we all know they need to add a few pitchers and I think they will. But I also think you are overreacting to a few bad games.

    And who would he bat for? Berti. That is it. So now he just takes the AB while in the line up.

    I agree. And for the record, I haven’t been impressed with his defense either. But I just disagree that he could have caught those balls to right earlier and even the one in the 7th. Yes, he should have played that one as a single.

    How did they waste Turner, if that is even a thing. He will probably go in and play 3rd base. Who else would he possibly bat for?

    Looked to me that he knew he couldn’t catch them so he positioned himself to take them off the wall. I think he played them fine. He may have oveetbrown the first cut off man on the play they scored. However has Dansby turned quicker they could have had him anyway.

    I am frustrated as well. So I understand. I also think we are spoiled by how much ground PCA makes up in the outfield. We may at times expect other outfielders to do that too. And no one could.

    I know you didn’t. And I agree with everything you said. I was commenting on your original point while also adding my view on what others said. You saw him exactly how I did. I thought he looked good, but some people were suggesting Tucker hurt his numbers. That was meant for them, not you. Sorry for confusion.

    I think you are seeing things that are not happening. The.balls to right field he had no chance of catching. He wasn’t jogging. That is his speed.

    He did pitch much better than what his final numbers will show. But the balls to right field were legitimate hits. Maybe Berti should have fielded that grounder and/or Swanson should have turned quicker to throw to home, but 2 runs were on Horton. Again, I still feel he looked good.
