I only mention that because many people were concerned if the Cubs traded Shaw they could sign someone who could be just as good as him next year. I think Rengifo could be.

Brewers signed Rengifo. Would it surprise anyone if he had a better year than Shaw as a utility player? It wouldn’t surprise me.

He was pretty confident in a Cubs trade for Pablo Lopez last year. And that never happened.

I don’t think it does. But, I doubt the Cubs were getting Gallen anyway. To me this moves doesn’t lessen the chance of Gallen.

I get it. He may never catch. But what happened with Schwarber doesn’t mean it will happen with Mo. As many have now pointed out, it appears the Cubs haven’t made that decision. So why do a handful of fans know better? That was all I was saying and what ithers have repeated.

I doubt the Cubs agree with you on Mo. For starters, I doubt he plays much first base. He is too short. Next, if all the Cubs envisioned with Mo is a DH who might put up decent offensive numbers I would think he would have been someone they would have been okay trading. I think the FO still believes he could catch. Maybe not 110 games or so, but maybe 60 or more. A back up catcher/ DH is way more valuable than just DH. Seems during trade discussions the Cubs viewed him very highly. He very well could end up just a DH. But I think your decision on him is very premature.

If Mo can learn as much in the majors as in the minors.catching everyday, I agree with you. Only advantage Tauchman, or any left handed bat they add, would be allowing Mo to catch at Iowa. They are not bringing in some guy who will clearly outhit Mo, IMO. A lefty bat would only be so Mo can learn by catching everyday. And maybe he can learn as much on the major league roster. 🤷

If Alcantara beats out McCormick and Carlson, Tauchman isn’t hindering Alcantara at all. Right now the team seems to be leaning in to Mo as the DH. Or at least it appears they want a left handed bat. So if they got Tauchman he would be taking MO’s spot. He would be that left handed bat instead of Mo.

I could see the Cubs doing something in the neighborhood or 3/$63M. But the sticking point is the first year opt out. I doubt they do that. Maybe opt out after 2 years. Maybe a 3rd year for $21M or a $4M opt out. That would guarantee Gallen 2/$46M. He might take that.

At this point I think with Mo it is about where he will get better at catcher than it is finding a guy who will be “odds on” better than him. A guy like Tauchman makes some sense, IMO. They would have their regular 8 guys then a bench if the back up catcher, Shaw, Austin, Tauchman and whoever comes out of the battle for the last spot (Carlson, Chas, or Alcantara). Maybe even a surprise guy. Taichman might not outhit Mo, but he could play right instead of Seiya. So that helps them defensively. So if he hits a bit, even similar to last year, he would help them. And if they think Mo learns more about catching at Iowa, it helps Mo in the future. I think they are done, but I wouldn’t mind Tauchman.

I’m less worried about Mo hitting then I am maximizing his value in the future. If, by going to Iowa, he can become a decent catcher and turn into a 60-90 games a year catcher, I wouldn’t mind him being in Iowa and the Cubs get someone else like Lowe to DH, against a right handed pitcher. I know some have suggested he might learn more on the major league roster. If that is true, I am fine with him as the DH. I think he will be a good offensive player. Maybe even a guy who post 115. Whatever they end up doing with him, I hope after this year he catches more often.

In an effort to post something that doesn’t age well, I will say I believe we are done for the off season. I think what we see is what we get. Maybe a minor league signing, but that is it. I don’t think Gallen or any other major leaguer will be added. Now, really hope this one comes back me soon.😅

I think Gallen would fit with the 3 you mentioned to perform at a high level. That is why I would want him. Then you can get 3 of those 4, which gives you a better chance of actually getting 3 with high level performances.

I think the only way him opting out after one year and the Cubs losing a draft pick works is if they win the WS next year and he pitches well. Which is why I don’t see the Cubs allowing an opt out after 1 year. They didn’t with Imai, I doubt they do with Gallen. Imai only cost the posting fee. And they didn’t do it. Don’t see them being ok with losing a second round pick.

I agree. But I think his terms would be a one year opt out. And I don’t think the Cubs want to do that. I would rather just do a straight 4/$82M deal and no opt outs. Something like that. But if that isnt enough money for him, I’m not sure how much further the Cubs should go. That is why I say a deal with an opt out after 2 years is the best option. I wouldn’t sign him with a 1 year opt out. They lose him after 1, and a second round pick. I don’t like that idea.

Did you mean to quote me with your response? Because I agree with you. Usually I would expect your comment to be after someone suggested Taillon will be better than Gallen.

Entertainment is absolutely geared to a younger crowd. That doesn’t necessarily mean if someone is older they can’t enjoy it too. But generally the demographic entertainment is targeting is younger than you at 51 and me, at 65. I think both Kendrick and BB had good shows. I liked BB music. I would have liked Lenrick better had I understood everything he was again and also knew some back story on his performance. But, visually his was also entertaining.

If you stopped watching 2 decades ago that tells me the halftime show isn’t for your demographic anyway. Mine neither. I have learned to just realize no one cares what the older people think. They are there to entertain people under 30. It looked to me like BB did that.

I have said, in the past, that I wouldn’t trade Tailon until they found out if they really had pitchers performing as they hoped. Once Steele comes back they would have 7 starting pitchers. If they are all healthy and pitching well then you trade Jamo. I agree if the Cubs can’t fix Gallen I am fine letting him go. I do trust the Cubs coaching staff if they did sign him. So, really, we pretty much agree. To recap, if the Cubs feel they can get Gallen back at least most of the way to what he was a few years back he is a good risk to take. But only for multiple years. And they can also wait on trading Jamo to hedge against poor production of any if the others on the staff and/or Steele’s health.

Aside from a bad first half of last season, Gallen has been a top 30 pitcher in baseball since he came into the league. That is a solid #2 starter. Tailon is a #3 or #4 starter. If the Cubs think Gallen is more the guy he was for all other starts except for the first half of 2025, or they think they can get him back to what he was, he would be a big upgrade over Tailon. If they don’t get him because they don’t tbh k they can get him back to that level, I am fine with them passing on him. I just don’t agree that Tailon is an even better to be just as good.

I agree it has to be more than 1 year before he can opt out. But I do think he will be better than Taillon. And if he gets 2 or more years from the Cubs that means that is one less guy they have to replace next year. Which are reasons I would like the Cubs getting him. I agree that the Dbacks are the favorites to get him. But I think the Cubs are a good fit as well.
