    I think more than 1 thing can be true. People can love Ross for his Cubs history, think he was an ok manager and still like the move to Counsell. Basically that is where I am. I think he took too much heat for every move he made that didn’t work. But overall I thought he was fine. I just think Counsell is better. I also think his way of managing aligns more with Hoyer. I also feel by signing Counsell they have made a statement that 24’ matters. I think with Counsell as the manager they Cubs will be more aggressive in the off season.

    If they are going to trade him I hope it is for a young controlled pitcher. I would be fine with for Soto too, but they better then sign him long term. Not interested in Morel for 1 year of Alonso and not sure I would want to sign Alonso to a deal over the time he is looking for.

    But when talking a trade with SD Soto has to be considered a 1 year rental. That is the value the Padres should expect back. And a top 15 prospect in the game shoukd not be traded for one year and a $33M contract. I get the PCA concern. But if they are going to trade PCA I would rather it be for a young controlled starting pitcher they can have for 4 years or more. Sign Bellinger and deal PC for a pitcher. Keep in mind, I would love Soto. But that is too high a price for him. They don’t need to give PCA for him.

    I realize Burger is not a very good fielder, but depending on what the Marlins wanted for him, I wouldn’t mind him at 3rd. With GG in the middle the Cubs might be able to slack off on defense a little at 3rd. He would give them a lot of power from 3rd. Others in a trade would be Torres, if he agreed to move to third or Polanco if he moved to 3rd(or is he a FA?)

    PCA is suffering from not being the shiney new toy. Happens to all prospects. Guys don’t want to trade the new best thing. But as soon as they see that guy they want to move him. 19 AB over 30 3 weeks in the majors shoukd not diminish PCA’s value. There is no way the Cubs should trade a top 15 prospect in the game for Soto.

    Honestly it doesn’t matter to me. I was only trying to explain where I saw what I saw. TBH, when I did read it the first time I was kind of surprised they suggested the ML team didn’t have a say. I am sure it is more like you are suggesting.

    BN story on 10/24 is where I read about Morel going to the DR. That is where I got the information that in the DR they will play a player where there is a need. And not necessarily in a position the ML team wants him to work at. I don’t know how to post that article, but that is what I am referencing.

    Well than that is contradictory to what was reported when the report came out that Morel was going to the DR for the winter league. I think it was written about here, actually. That said, I honestly don’t care. Let him try first. If he can handle it they can figure out what to do next.

    I remember reading about the winter league when Morel went down there. The article specifically said the winter leagues are a competitive league all to themselves. And the teams play guys where they need them. It is not some sort of development league where the major league team can dictate where they want their guy to play. Not saying the Cubs don’t want him at 1st. I am just saying he is at 1st because the team he is on, needed a first baseman.

    The Cubs have no say in where Morel plays on his winter ball team. While I do believe they will try him there, I don’t see him playing first in that team as something the Cubs initiated.

    I seriously doubt they trade Horton for Soto. I don’t think one year of a guy they have to pay $33M for gets the Padres a prospect at Horton’s level.

    That is interesting. So what does that do for his chances of staying with the Cubs? And if they kept Morel I am not sure how Soto fits in, DH? Also does that take Alonso out of trade talks? Does that mean no interest in Hoskins. And finally I think that would close the books on Mervis.

    True. I wouldn’t not deal Morel in the trade. I would just rather use Brown. And no matter who they use I would hope they then extend Soto.

    I would rather keep Morel. Maybe trade him for someone else but not here. Maybe a young controlled starting pitcher? Or play him at 3rd. Either way wouldn’t include him here. Rather give Brown up. And Padres want pitching.

    If Smyly is in the deal and the Cubs saved $5M of his contract by moving him they don’t need a prospect back. Brown, then either Killian or Wesnecki and Smyly as a third piece with the Cubs paying $4M to $5M of his salary for Soto.

    I wouldn’t say I was pro Ross. I am saying he got a bad rap here at times. I think he was an ok manager. But I am happy they hired Counsell for the reasons I originally stayed.

    I think Ross was fine. I do think he got more heat here than he deserved. However, I do feel Counsell is a better manager. I also feel this gives the Cubs one less excuse if they falter next year. Which is why I think they will do more this off season to put a solid team on the field with Counsell as manager than they would if Ross was still in charge. I can’t put a number on it as to how many wins Counsell is worth. Frankly no one can. I just happen to think he wins with less talent on the field than the Cubs put on the field. To me that says he gets the most out of his players.

    The issue is there is nothing anyone can show the other side to make them thjnk differently. As I have said before, IMO, Ross was ok. I don’t blame the collapse all on him. And I realize a lot of his criticism was result bias. I also know that will happen with Counsell too. Probably by the guys who feel this was a no big deal move. As far as proving Counsell is the best you can look to his rosters the last $ years and the success he had with basically average players, to below average. To me that shows he does something right. To me that shows he wins with little and get the most out of what he is given. I can respect others not seeing it that way. But if I was asked who I would rather be managing my team, Ross or Counsell, I would pick Counsell because I think he gets more out of guys for some reason. For those who see no difference, I am fine with that.

    I really don’t understand the naysayers of this move. I feel most were saying Ross was ok, but not a great manager. I get it when the argument is any move that doesn’t work Ross got blamed for it but when it did work it was the players. That is no different than any fan base with its manager. Everyone has a different opinion. And just because Ross didn’t go with the opinion of the poster doesn’t mean if he did what the poster suggested that would work either.no get all that. That will also happen next year with Counsell. So are those suggesting this is no big deal saying they would rather just stick with Ross? I will not pretend to know exactly how much of a difference a manager makes as far as wins and loses. But for the most part Counsell was industry wise considered the best in the business. And the Cubs for him. Good for them. This isn’t a knock on Ross. This is a cheer for the Cubs going out and getting the best manager they could at this time. And with that move I also expect the Cubs to be aggressive. so, are there those here who feel we were better off with Ross? That is my only question.

    If the Cubs trade Alcantara it is because he is really wanted by another team and the Cubs are getting someone they really want. It will not be because the Cubs have to move him because they don’t think they will have room for him on the major league roster in two years. Too much can happen year to year to earmark a guy as strictly someone they will trade because he won’t have a position. If he is good and worth starting in the majors and the Cubs value him, they will find a spot for him.

    I think it is way to early to suggest a high end prospect won’t have a position to fill in the team in 2 years. So much can happen I can’t say his chances are slim to debut as a Cub. Maybe he is traded because there is a demand for him. But I doubt he is traded because the Cubs don’t see a place for him in a few years.

    I am not sure who they will sign but I am fairly confident they will go over the first line of the luxury tax. I can see them trading for Alonso or Glasnow or signing someone like Hoskins to go along with other signing and trades. The one year guy they won’t resign in 25’ and drop back under the LT. If it is Glasnow, maybe Horton takes his spot. I am not suggesting these are the only moves. Maybe sign Bellinger and then trade PCA for a young controlled starting pitcher. Maybe trade for Soto. Maybe Ohtani. I also think they could add a FA pitcher. Or trade for a 3rd baseman. I just think it will be a very active off season and in the end they will have a team that “on paper” is the favorite to win the division. There are a lot of avenues they can take to put a serious World Series contender on the field in 24’.

    And her he won 92 games. That is pretty impressive. I agree it might not make a huge difference. I also agree at times Ross was unfairly criticized. People will be bitching about Counsel too. But to me Counsell is a better manager. So I a happy they signed him.

    I do get this. Yes, Ross was not given great options. But I do believe the brewers (Counsell and coaches) did work some magic with some of the pen arms they had. I am not crediting Counsell himself for this. I am saying it is him and coaches. I am hoping some come our way. Especially whoever teaches pitch framing. IMO that would be a start to the staff performing better. I also think, for whatever reason, Counsell got a lot out of the limited talent he was given. I do agree that we will still see the armchair managers criticizing Counsell when he makes a move that doesn’t work. I also agree Ross has that happen to him all the time. As I said, IMO, Ross was ok. They didn’t lose because of him. But I do believe Counsell is a step above for whatever reason. Plus, I feel this is a sign the Cubs will be aggressive this year and they are targeting winning in 24’.
