  1. That's not a great sign. My optimism they plan to start 2024 with a better team then they ended 2023 is slowly declining.
  2. I've always been on board for Hoskins but was hoping he was like the 4th or 5th best addition this offseason.
  3. That sounds about right.
  4. Gross. Getting harder to find a way to a good offseason.
  5. Not that long. I don't believe the Cubs handed out any major league contracts in the 2019 or 2020 offseasons.
  6. At this point striving for an 88 win club would be kinda nice. It's been a while since they aimed that high.
  7. Hoyer is patiently waiting for all the big market teams to stop spending so he can compete with the smaller markets on thrift deals.
  8. The ultimate thrifty move. They've brought in Counsell as a player/coach.
  9. I'm definitely concerned about a Bellinger contract. But I'm probably on board for 7/180. The Cubs need a legit bat, and you whiffed on the top GA's again. He's probably got the highest ceiling of the guys left. If the system is capable of spitting out cheap major league contributors for a while then this is risk you can afford to take. But he's gotta play center.
  10. I don't see much a difference. Certain posters from both sites are more inclined to be a little nastier or argue in circles for hours. Once you learn who they're pretty easy to avoid if you're not in the mood. I think PSD probably had more of a majority pretty jaded with the Ricketts crying broke and unwilling to behave like a top 4 market then I see here. Which is understandable. But that will likely shift if they ever reverse that trend. But overall I'm guessing trying to read moods on the internet is probably a futile exercise and I wouldn't get too worked up about it.
  11. Naw. He's not the same level of star as Ohtani and he doesn't bring in as much revenue. Ohtani was a rare case of best player in the league/international star.
  12. Bummer. I can't even root for him on the Dodgers. They are gonna be hell to deal with for a long while. Back to Plan B or C or whatever Hoyer has cookin. He better have some trades up his sleeve.
  13. Yah, that's probably right. I was thinking having a shot to look legitimate was the goal but that's probably only a perk compared to the engagement/gained followers he's adding whether he's right or wrong. Posting updates raises that engagement.
  14. For the most part this guy seems pretty darn fake with 90 % of his breaking stories completely wrong. So I can't really convince myself to buy into it. On the other hand I don't really understand why he'd be doubling down this morning and claim Ohtani's on the way to Chicago when he could just wait this out and claim his guess was right if the Cubs eventually sign him. But I don't really understand these people so who knows. Something to watch for today I guess.
  15. A more recent history of winning. A better team. A whole country rooting for him. I think most people without bias would probably take Toronto over Chicago in this situation. The only big drawback is the tough division but there's probably some fun in the challenge of trying to take over the East. He'll be be quite the canadian hero if they start winning that division.
  16. Yamamato would have been nice.
  17. Well I think that's officially it. Bummer. Might have to catch some Jays games this year. I think it'd be fun to see them take over the East for a bit. Hopefully Hoyer is working hard on something unexpected and Hoskins is like our 4th or 5th best addition heading into the season.
  18. I'd agree. Although personally I don't give them any credit for trying this year. They could have been trying to trade for or sign stars that last half decade and they didn't. Now they might be interested again but you can't automatically win these battles just because you decided to try again. Who knows if having a winning team on the field the last couple years could have influenced Ohtani in our direction. Punting or not, now they're on Plan B ro C and Hoyer has some wheeling and dealing to do. Hopefully he's up for it.
  19. You've definitely got good reason to be pissed the Cubs are once again missing out on the top of the FA market. The way Hoyer talks certainly doesn't help optimism either. Personally I expect the Cubs to make some solid improvements via trade and atleast go into the season as division favorites. It's hard to remain optimistic given their recent track record but I think all signs are pointing to going back into the tax this year. They need to save face a little and lure in some customers for the stand alone streaming. I'd bet there's still some genuine excitement to come this offseas0n.
  20. I still don't really buy any of those Toronto trade rumors. I think it's all the usual horsefeathers speculation. You don't pitch Ohtani he's coming to a winner and then immediately start dumping payroll to afford him. Doesn't pass the smell test.
  21. I think Toronto is a pretty great fit all around, other then being in a really tough division. But wanting to "win" isn't very specific. He'll probably win a lot in Toronto even if it's tougher to make the playoffs. He'll also be the sports hero for two whole countries. I think it's pretty attractive.
  22. Yah, Hoskins as the biggest addition would be a huge dissapointment. I think they'll do better and atleast bring somebody in via trade. But they really havn't earned my trust back yet so it's hard being optimistic.
  23. Player: "I don't want a big dog and pony show. Let's keep the negotiations private" Media still creates big dog and pony show but without actually having any clue what's going on. Fans: "What a primma donna. He's making himself look bad" Ohtani is just living his life and making a career move in a professional manner. If you find yourself sitting at home disliking him based on various contradictory twitter rumors then I say that's all on you.
  24. After having close to zero expectations from this ownership/gm the last few years i really let myself believe they were going to be going all out this offseason. That's my fault. There are still ways to build a strong division leader here but this is still very dissapointing. I'm not going to give them a pass for trades being too expensive or players not picking them because they've put themselves in this situation. It's nice they seem to be willing to spend towards the tax again but actions speak louder then words. They've had plenty of opportunities to go after stars in FA or trades the last half decade and shied away, often because of money. At some point you have to find a way to do it.
