  1. I came with that formula long before Aaron did, he just adjusted the figures and added park factors to it. But, I have a thread at Fanball (I believe that's where it's at) and I spoke of the formula and not too long later, Gleeman shines it up and it becomes a useful stat. I think I gave it to Bukie on the ESPN boards as a easy way to figure something close to EqA w/out the park factors. you might also remember that he originally called it "gleeman production average." im not sayin, im just sayin.
  2. player a appears to be burnett's season line both home and away. burnett's actually 3.51 era, 1.28 whip, 6.36 k/9 on the road.
  3. I'd like to see that OPS up a bit higher, though. yeah, even if he was playing ss i'm not sure that i'd be particualrly thrilled with that little power at his age.
  4. the a's reach a new low point tonight by only beating the royals 4-0. for the moment, they are two back of the angels, depending on the outcome of the LA-Boston game.
  5. everyone knows HR's are all that matter. sometimes i like to look at runs created too (runs+rbi)
  6. if we're trying to keep it simple, i dont see that big a deal with just looking at avg/obp/slg. if we want one number to decide things, i think we'll just have to use something more complicated. vorp is nice.
  7. hahahahah some people think the cubs lose because they are cursed knowledgable cub fans know that it is because they are morons.
  8. what if the cardinals are smart and have carpenter skip a couple starts? it's best for the team, but that's just weak on carp's part, right? i mean, skipping starts is way worse than coming out an inning early.
  9. agreed, i also want to give the cardinals a ws championship to go along with the one theyre going to win two months from now.
  10. fun, fun http://www.juiceenewsdaily.com/0605/sports/positive.html basically it says that michael kay radio show is reporting that clemens and johnny damon are about to be suspended.

  12. oooh i might have to watch this one, i like it when the cubs play in colorado
  13. in high school baseball, EVERYONE wears their socks high. except me. all the cool major leaguers had no visible socks, so i didn't either. unfortunately, i just looked dorky instead of cool.
  14. thats clearly the most reliable website of all-time
  15. BP's expected W-L record has Z at 10.9 wins, good for 10th in the league and 11th in the majors (only buerhle has more in the AL). Maddux is at 23rd in the league with 8.8.
  16. and pretty much all of those guys have some underlying reason (basically either past success or huge contract) to explain why they'd still be on a team.
  17. can we put money on whether this will ever happen? guess how many shortstops in the national league have an .830 ops. zero. guess how many al shortstops have an .830 ops. 4. but one of them is jhonyy peralta, he of the crazy high babip. but he's still got it, so he counts. derek jeter, btw, is at exactly .831. jeter's career ops is .848, but jeter plays bad defense. so if cedeno becomes an .830 ops ss and plays spectacular defense, he's a fair shake better than derek jeter. i think this is unlikely to ever be the case.
  18. why would you have to wear another shirt underneath? i think it'd be a great look. at least for a cool guy like me. somebody buy me a reds jersey and ill post pics. Because it would look weird without a shirt, cool guy or not. WELL we had sleeveless jerseys for baseball my freshman year. one time we all wore them to a game, and all the ladies in the house said yeah, but the umpire said no, so we had to wear shirts under them. but they were still cool.
  19. last year i hated moises and wanted him gone because he acted weird and ran the bases poorly now that he's gone i realize i was all wrong. im not necessarily saying that it was dumb to not re-sign him, but all things being equal i wish he was a cub, just because he was so cool.
  20. why would you have to wear another shirt underneath? i think it'd be a great look. at least for a cool guy like me. somebody buy me a reds jersey and ill post pics.
  21. you couldve waited to see if he wanted my copy
  22. That would be Win Shares by Bill James. And it's extremely hard to find. I wish my library had it so I could check it out and then claim to have lost it and pay them for it. I found one at Powells online, and they wanted $133 for it. ill sell you my copy for 132 dollars
  23. Pathetic. start having games here in avon out at avcom park. we've only got seating for about 40, but you can stand where ever or even sit in your car down the foul lines. you won't draw well, but think of what you'll save in expenses! oh wait never mind, this week is the fat steer show, so that means the carnival is set up in the outfield. sorry if i got your hopes up.
  24. let's play with win shares again! 2004 johnson 25 sheets 21 clemens 20 pavano 20 zambrano 19 2005 clemens 23 oswalt 18 carpenter 16 willis 15 smoltz 15 BUT it should be noted that win shares taking hitting into account too! and it certainly isn't fair to penalize guys for not hitting when we're talking about the cy young. DO IT AGAIN clemens 23 oswalt 19 carpenter 19 smoltz 17 willis 16
  25. That's not an example; that's fiction. Pujols would no longer be playing on an MLB team. 9 year olds was just an exaggeration to get the point that the team would be terrible. My point was that players on teams with very low win totals could get shortchanged with Win Shares. Have you read the book? I'm at work so I don't have my copy handy but I know that point is addressed multiple times. I found the essay about good teams vs bad teams, and he does explicitly discuss this. He basically just says that the system is carefully designed to be fair towards all players, regardless of teammated. Then he has a long list of players who had very similar seasons, except on teams of wildly different success, and shows that the have similar win share totals.
