    agreed. this is no different than when everyone flipped out and said we had to hammer bonds because he lied under oath. if we're going to do all this and use real live court proceedings and the like, we can't just screw around a let people make a mockery of the system by toying with it this way.

    yeah, this is really the whole thing right here. it's the one people can access now, so it'd be really convenient if it turned out it was great and we could just point to it and settle arguments. people are way too attached to it. i don't see how it's impressive at all.

    If we keep Fox as the backup catcher, then we can't use him as a pinch hitter. If we use him as a pinch hitter in, say, the seventh inning and then Hill is injured in the eighth - who catches? how likely is it that this happens? think about how specific the scenario you're describing is. fox pinch hits AND hill is injured afterwards to the point that he has to leave the game AND the game is close enough that an inning or two of fontenot or whatever catching makes the difference it's very unlikely we'd lose a game as a result of this.

    come on guys, this is paul sullivan. we all know that he went and pestered soriano with 50 questions trying to bait him into saying something the least bit negative so he'd have a story. don't buy into this stuff. non-issue.

    He's just an amazing ballplayer. I hope Cardinals fans appreciate him. I hope he gets suspended for PEDs i think it would be a better learning opportunity for our children if he died

    Fortunately, they all have struck out enough guys to have a K/BB of at least 2(wait, Stevens is 1 K short, so 1.97 or something), they all carry a BAA under .190, and they've given up a combined 4 HR in 119 IP. Also, whether you want to term it "selling high" or whatever, the Cubs definitely got more in return for DeRosa than the Indians did; and from what we can gather as fans, DeRosa seemed to be a much hotter commodity when he was dealt from Cleveland than when Hendry traded him. i should hope the cubs got more for derosa than the indians did -- the cubs were trading away a full season of him, and the indians just over half.

    wha? Fontenot posted a +18 UZR last year and is +20 this year in about a month's worth of games at 2B. DeRosa has never put up a positive UZR at 2B and was nearly -16 last year, and hasn't played the position yet this season. With Fontenot seemingly likely to be 20 runs better per season with the glove, DeRosa needs to maintain a very high offensive output in conjuction with Fontenot being terrible with the bat in order to be a better value. this is the sort of output that makes me think these numbers aren't very good. do you honestly think that fontenot is 20 runs a season better than derosa? that just seems absurd. also, uzr has theriot as the fourth best defensive ss in the major leagues this season.

    does soriano have clauses based on PAs? If not, then this has nothing to do with what truffle was talking about it makes perfect sense to keep ordonez on the bench in order to save yourself 18 MILLION DOLLARS. You can find 700 OPS guys in AAA for 50 bucks isn't this pretty similar to the the thing glavine was complaining about though? it's in everyone's contract that you can't release players for financial reasons. i wonder if it says anything anywhere about refusing to play guys for financial reasons.

    is it just me, or is it really, really nice to see a guy who can field the position out there at short for once? i've noticed a LOT of other people saying the same thing, so i thought i'd go ahead and start a thread in which we can all collectively sing his praises.

    i'm a big fan of not going too crazy about what's going on, and you're definitely right that no one else is running away, but losing 8 in a row to pittsburgh, san diego, and st. louis could absolutely at least be the beginning of a tremendous nosedive.

    if the list is really supposed to just be the 50 best players right now, i don't think i'm putting a 35 year old, bad defensive shortstop who may not be able to ops .800 anymore on my list at all.

    switching to hill would be unforgivable. do what you have to do with lee, but there's just so little chance of hill being decent over any reasonably long period of time that to replace soto with him would be completely unacceptable.
