  1. neyer and the discussion about the 1998 NL MVP race yeah, that was how i was able to pin it down to 98. i was a hardcore "WHO CARES ABOUT ON BASE THESE GUYS AREN'T LEADOFF HITTERS" 13 year old, and neyer slowly swung me around.
  2. DeJesus OBP in 2004: .360 DeJesus OBP in 2012: .360 And the average AL OBP in 2004 was 20 points higher than it was in the NL this year. But yeah, consistently gone down. by the way soccer, that would mean that an OB% of 360 in 2004 would be the equivilent of .340 this year. Thanks for the help it shows even more for my point that his 40 game split of .360 will likely go down this year. ohhhhhhh man do i love this post
  3. i started reading rob neyer in like 1998 or so and decided he was smarter than everyone else i read/heard talk about baseball.
  4. THESE SENTENCES WERE WRITTEN CONSECUTIVELY i think he's writing his posts like the lyrics on kid a where he just wrote dozens of individual sentences and is now throwing them out at random regardless of what comes before or after
  5. i was really hoping he would retire after getting hit in the head by a pitch and collapsing on the ground only to have the umpire think he was faking it again and throw his unconscious body out of the game, but i guess this will do
  6. if the indians trade him because their stupid fans are mad about what he says while pitching great, he will have been proven correct
  7. i generally agree, but that line about how he only pinch hits for people because they suck is incredible
  8. the only way this makes sense is if the cba has a provision that says backup catchers get paid by the hand and the new market inefficiency is finding a way to pay people less than league minimum
  9. someday we will have a gm who is immune to the allure of the aged white scrapper guy who somehow "plays the game the right way" despite completely sucking. unfortunately, between this and reed johnson, it's pretty apparent that we don't have that gm today.
  10. He is tree-mendous! Good ole country hard ball You gotta be some kinda strong OPPO-POP
  11. That's not true. He had been pretty damn [expletive] and deserving of his bad reputation in recent years. And his reputation hasn't changed at all. I'm pretty sure most people still think he sucks. Just going by Fangrahps, which I'm pretty sure is where the early optimism comes from (unless I missed another numbers post at some point), he's been above average every year but 2009 as a Cub. His rep has just been hurt by the fact that the Cubs originally signed him as as a CF, which he's not, and that he's an awkward gangly f'er out there. I wouldn't be surprised if most still think he sucks. He's always going to have that rep and he's never going to not look awkward out there. I could be wrong, but I didn't think -2.9, 5.1, and 3.4 (his totals in 09, 10, and 11) runs above replacement qualified as above average. 0.0 is average, not replacement level
  12. the kid in little big league would have deftly outmaneuvered dale here, this was like the exact scenario they tested on him before he got the job
  13. i like pat's inning off because judd always asks keith some sort of horribly inane question ("what pitchers back in your day most enjoyed taking batting practice during rain delays") and keith spends like 5 pitches trying to come up with an answer before simply listing three names i've never heard before and giving no specific details whatsoever ("phil krupt, tommy plibt, and sammy dingus jr. also, with that grand slam i forgot to mention a moment ago, the cubs now lead 4-3").
  14. what, you don't think a playoff team should have a bullpen consisting of james russell and 5-6 bad pitchers?
  15. retracted, they didn't make him do anything stupid
  16. i like dempster so much better when i forget that dorks think he's hilarious when he does stuff like this thing that's about to happen
  17. DROP jayson werth ADD edwin encarnacion
  18. only if we were afraid he was going to mistake castro for a cat
  19. i'd play for free!
  20. i love that almost all the questions she picked could be answered on google. this is also pretty great:
  21. It is Chicago, so you don't have to be alive to vote. Have your dearly departed vote for them too. i dont get it
  22. I see to think that something like that has happened in the past and a pinch runner is allowed. What if a guy hits a sure double off the wall but breaks his leg coming out of the box? Does he still get 2nd base? i would guess he wouldn't get jack. he'd be out. that can't be right, maybe you don't understand. he said it was a SURE double
  23. I bid two bits you probably pay like 5 grand for a shave and a haircut, so soul is in luck
  24. i met a friend of a friend last weekend and started talking about the cubs with him. he told me that starlin castro was the worst shortstop in the major leagues and that the cubs were going to move him to center field OVER THE ALL-STAR BREAK because they have a really good shortstop prospect in iowa. he did express concern that this would mean anthony rizzo would have to move from cf to lf. so what i'm saying is that i'm pretty sure you're wrong about all that, sneaky
