  1. i’m going to go out on a limb and say the contract we asked arrieta if he’d accept was similar to the darvish deal in that it was on that would allow him to play major league baseball. no way did we offer arrieta something comparable to this and double no way would he have turned it down.
  2. Theo's out here opening windows back up for us: this is what happens when you fight a theo in free agency
  3. who is ervin santana would be a really bad jeopardy category for a lot of reasons
  4. six straight days of baseball without an off-day to start the season is such a dream. honestly increases my enthusiasm for opening day by a significant amount.
  5. i was going to get mad about my request being ignored, but in fairness, this thread going 29 minutes without mojo posting stupid garbage was probably a new record
  6. gah we’re debating the stupid brewers guy again NO ONE POST IN THIS THREAD AGAIN UNTIL DARVISH SIGNS
  7. St. Louis Cardinals no longer relegated to middling status, will now receive ten competitive balance picks per year.
  8. yeah but just think if you got your dream board
  9. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/02/agent-brodie-von-wagenen-speaks-out-on-stagnant-free-agent-market.html Cubs among these? Between Morrow, Chisek, Duensing, Smyly and Chatwood we have to of given out the most FA money of any team this offseason and still are going to be giving out a contract of significance for another starter. I don’t think we are. Plus Theo knows to stay under the LT, we are pretty much spending to our limit without hitting any penalty. If anything I’d guess is the other way and Ricketts is willing to spend whatever but Theo knows it’s good business not to hit that LT. the luxury tax penalties aren’t that bad. the whole thing is a scam to get the fans of big market teams like the cubs to let ownership off the hook for refusing to spend like they could.
  10. darvish is in the drivers seat and his car is in the parking lot outside dodger stadium and he’s sitting there crying and listening to the smiths waiting for the dodgers to offer him a one year deal for the league minimum
  11. darvish is probably a nice guy and has every right to play wherever he wants, but i’m really going to hate his guts when he signs with the dodgers for whatever they can offer up.
  12. agreed. i generally want to read every possibly useful rumor, but that guy can go to hell.
  13. He hasn’t been wrong necessarily. He admitted he made the jump to conclusion on saying Darvish to Cubs when all he heard from his source was we substantially outbid the Brewers on him. He’s still favoring us to get him as well and said by Monday he will decide.... I don’t know if any other Cubs centric stuff he’s said and whether it was true or not. i'm not saying that the stuff from him isn't interesting, but he was wrong. i don't know why he'd think that the cubs offering more than the brewers meant that darvish had decided on the cubs, but that's clearly the message he conveyed with his original post. he made a definitive statement, was wrong, and now i simply hate him forever. i honestly had a pretty similar reaction. his explanation was lousy.
  14. pass on jake. sign cobb in that case. hell, even with monty we'll be fine. I think it would be pretty risky and stupid to not sign one of the 3. Especially with where the market is at, if the horsefeathering Brewers are our only competition for Darvish (at an already depressed price) I don’t see why we wouldn’t go get Jake/Cobb at an even lower price with little to no competition. yeah, the cubs are in a nice spot and would be favored over stl slightly if they added nothing, but it would honestly be a shame to take one of the few seasons we have with this cheap core and just roll the dice on this rotation as it currently stands. our 1-4 starters seem more dependable than most, but all pitchers are scary and we have exactly five usable starters at present. also chatwood might take a step forward and be good but it’s also not horribly unreasonable to say we might need to move him out of the rotation due to ineffectiveness by like july. every chance to win is sacred! the old saying still holds true. it would be a real disappointment if we saddled what is otherwise a really good chance to win with a starting rotation with no margin for error. happily, i think that’s very unlikely. now go get darvish.
  15. i went to high school next to them too! it was ridiculous.
  16. REAL TALK my gf posted this on my phone while i was in the bathroom but also i agree with it
  17. Wow isn’t it about time they sign him already -sigh- I can’t stop checking my phone!!!! They’re idiots if they think they can get anyone better!!!!!!!
  18. Then you will love the writer's suggestion that we sign him to 8 years to lower the AAV. it's obviously a stupid suggestion for several reasons, but he has them at the same total amount, so really who the hell would care. the same money over more years is a good idea at any price (assuming the contract isn’t so long the commissioner vetoes it for circumventing the luxury tax).
  19. i want to hear more from this smart baseball person (who obviously knows what replacement level is) about how the cubs are soon going to be forced to send out sub-replacement level players also jesus christ move this post and all the others to the thread for non-cardinal division rivals.
  20. GO TALK ABOUT WHO GETS TO BE THIRD OR FOURTH IN THE DIVISION IN ANOTHER THREAD AND START POSTING MORE MADE UP TWITTER RUMORS DARVISH HERE
  21. this is a good start but i need this to be a little more legit before I can start texting my twitter-phobic friends and family about it in an effort to make it seem like i am a cubs news magician
  22. Or it means they aren’t really that serious about Darvish and are just making sure they explore every avenue. if we aren’t serious on darvish and don’t want arrieta, are we just locked into cobb no matter what? i’m pretty sure i’m the sixth starter right now. going into a season with the rotation depth as it currently stands would be unconscionable for a team that plans to contend.
  23. unless we are really confident we’re actually going to sign darvish for way less than expected, spending any of our limited under the tax money on okay 35 year old relievers seems bad.
