  1. Yep, that's exactly why owners want the QO, it's salary suppression.
  2. I agree but I would prefer to see the QO go away entirely, or at least the punishment side of it. Teams getting an extra pick for losing a FA is fine, probably good, but teams losing picks is garbage.
  3. And that's entirely possible. I'd find it rather unfortunate but it's definitely possible... but to be fair, there is a significant portion of every fanbase that screams whenever a team fails to move literally every living, breathing player on the roster at the trade deadline. I think the Cubs will be modest sellers but there's a lot of interesting possibilities within that statement.
  4. Where did I imply it's a binary? There is a range of buying and selling. It's likely the Cubs will sell... to what extent? Well, I don't think anyone knows that, maybe not even the Cubs. But it'd be foolish to not closely monitor the market and move pieces that bring back good prospects for expiring contracts.
  5. I think team options work the same way but haven’t looked into it. I think the dates for options and QOs are different and unrelated. That’s my impression, anyway.
  6. The Cubs have a chance to win a four game series against the Cards today but the pitching matchup doesn't favor the hometown nine. No matter what happens today, it's likely the Cubs are sellers at the deadline... but it'd still be more fun to watch them make things interesting over the next several days. They're only four games under .500 after yesterday's win.
  7. Okay, so Bellinger got me to looking this up a few weeks back because I wasn't sure how mutual options worked with the QO, either. I *think* it works this way: 1. The team rejects the mutual option 2. The player rejects the mutual option 3. The team can then offer a QO
  8. I mean, it's still probably a good idea to sell but at least they're trying to make it interesting in the lead-up to the deadline and I will never, ever complain about someone beating the Cardinals.
  9. It makes some sense given the QO all but guaranteeing the Cubs either an extra season or a compensation pick. The QO also makes it harder for the Cubs to recoup the loss of that comp pick with a prospect return.
  10. Bellinger has a magic bat right now. At the very least, it's gonna look good come the deadline.
  11. I wanted to sign Mancini but when I saw the second year, I was less thrilled at the idea of signing him.
  12. It has felt like he's been volatile and a step down from previous seasons (where he wasn't great or anything, just pretty good) but his statcast numbers are mostly pretty good this season.
  13. The Crime Dog was Edwin Jackson before Edwin Jackson was cool.
  14. Yeah, this makes sense. It’s not as if nine days is going to impact much anyway.
  15. Welcome! BTW, I'm responding to every person who posts as a message that I have manually bypassed the post approval process for them so they can post freely on the site right off the bat.
  16. Good points, though it could simply come down to comfort level or experience. Maybe Fulmer is just more able and willing to open a game.
  17. I disagree and that's one of the biggest problems with BTV. The reality is that teams like the Yankees, Dodgers, et al care about production in the short- or mid-term far more than they care about the back-end of contracts. But BTV weights contracts strictly on dollars vs expected performance. I think Goldschmidt has a ton of value. I think Arenado has significant value to the right team.
  18. Yesterday, catcher Jose Trevino had season-ending wrist surgery, leaving a roster vacancy on the New York Yankees. The Yankees have several moving pieces, which complicate the situation for them. First, they're 3.0 games back of the final Wild Card berth. It's hard to envision the Yankees packing it in and giving up entirely but they may not focus on upgrading at catcher in favor of shoring up other positions. First, they have top prospect Austin Wells in AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He's 24 years old and while he's not having a great offensive season, it's entirely possible the Yankees could consider him good enough for a stretch run. Another complicating factor is the remaining Yankee catcher, Kyle Higashioka. He is 33 years old and also having a down year offensively, posting a 75 OPS+ over 61 games. Yan Gomes is controlled through the 2024 season and is under a very reasonable $6 million contract for 2023. He's also having a very nice offensive season for a catcher, currently sporting a 96 OPS+ over 63 games for the Cubs.

  20. In an article today, Matt brings up an excellent point: what about packaging Gomes in with Stroman to increase the return by a significant amount?
  21. Michael Fulmer is the opener for Drew Smyly today, which is probably a good idea to stymy the Cardinals' right-handed bats at the top of the order. Had a nice - but tense - win yesterday, let's get another one today.
