  1. Wow, that game got out of hand last night. I checked out when it was 3-1 Nationals, only to find the Cubs scored eleventeen runs late in the game to win by two touchdowns.
  2. Yep, we try to update it every day. Here you go: https://northsidebaseball.com/chicago-cubs-draft-picks/2023/
  3. It's rather bittersweet. I'd prefer the Cubs stay in it for at least awhile longer instead of seeing page views spike for a couple of weeks as interest around liquidating assets peaks and then there's nothing to be excited about down the stretch. I managed years and years of deadlines when the Twins were one of the worst teams in baseball. It was nice to have interest spike for a few weeks but it's no substitute for a competitive team.
  4. In slightly better news, yesterday was the first quasi-viral day of NSBB as one of the trade articles was picked up by an aggregator. We had 2,200 people visit the site, which as far as I can tell is the highest number since September of 2016 (the beginning of recorded site data).
  5. Well, the Cubs have started their "must-win" homestand by going 1-3. Yuck.
  6. Bringing Steele into the conversation opens up more possibilities than can be counted, really. And it's the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that could lead to great results if handled adeptly... which I don't have overwhelming confidence in happening.
  7. Madrigal has a ways to go to catch Eckstein, who was very valuable in 2002 and a solid regular for quite awhile, accumulating 16 fWAR in his career.
  8. Huh. Well, that kinda explains why Suzuki's Baseball Savant page never made much sense to me. It always fascinates me when there is the rare occurrence of a player being okay at the plate but routinely missing dead-red pitches.
  9. Thanks. I wasn't sure the order in which these things were triggered so I wasn't sure.
  10. I can't speak for anyone else but I use terms like "top 50", "top 100", etc. very loosely to describe the quality of a prospect. It's just a way to quickly reference a guy, not any kind of concrete line.
  11. I have a question someone here might be able to answer: Bellinger has a mutual option for 2024. We know those are almost never used so let's just assume he's a free agent. How does that work with a QO? Do the two parties decline the mutual option, then the Cubs offer Bellinger the QO?
  12. Yeah, you combine both into a single deal and the return should jump from "two pretty good prospects" to "one really good prospect, maybe plus a low minors prospect".
  13. Okay, that's fair. I can easily see a team like the Orioles just saying "we can weather that loss" without much consternation.
  14. But also, it doesn't matter. Cody Bellinger is not going to bring back a can't-miss top 50 prospect. Let's be realistic here. Most contending teams have what it takes to trade for Bellinger, it's a matter of whether they'll pay the price and who the Cubs like best.
  15. Well, the Nationals are in town. It feels like a sweep is needed to maintain any semblance of hope before the deadline.
  16. Quite a few people have Wiggins and Rivera on their lists. By the way, all votes will be revealed and displayed in a thread after the completion of voting.
  17. USA Today's Bob Nightengale mentioned that the Astros have checked in with the Cubs about Marcus Stroman and Cody Bellinger. Starting pitching always has high demand at the trade deadline but it appears there are several teams that should be interested in acquiring a right-handed center fielder who can hit; along with the Astros, the Yankees and Twins are two contenders with gaping holes at center. Bellinger is also making a hell of a case for maximum return as a rental: over the past 14 days, he has posted a 1.357 OPS with five home runs and is on pace for a 5+ win season over 550 plate appearances.

  19. I'd really hate to see the Cardinals get that kind of satisfaction out of the 2023 season.
  20. Somehow, the content field for rumors decided it didn't want to give anyone but administrators access to it. Should be fixed now, sorry.
  21. The Cubs put Justin Steele on the mound in hopes of securing a series win against the enigmatic Red Sox because after today, it's 13 consecutive games against teams 14+ games under .500. If the Cubs are going to make a run, now is the time.
  22. To put Alex Kirilloff in context a bit, he's still only 25 years old. In 2019, he was BA's #15 prospect, MLB's #9 prospect, and BP's #39 prospect. In 2020, he didn't play because of the pandemic. Through 2021-2022, he kept suffering wrist injuries. He's still that guy who was so highly ranked, it's just a matter of whether he recovers from two years of wrist difficulties. He hasn't "failed" at the MLB level so much as he hasn't gotten runway as a healthy player for a long time. That's why I'd dislike this trade for the Twins and really like it for the Cubs. I'd bet on Kirilloff for a rental almost every time.
  23. Really nice win that the Cubs needed. Get the win tomorrow and they are in decent shape with 13 consecutive games against teams way under .500.
