  1. I doubt it. Everyone else is wrong but the White Sox when it comes to pretty much anything baseball-related. And when did Hawk have the right to appropriate Andre Dawson's nickname? Dawson won an MVP for a last place team. Hawk Harrelson is best known for firing Tony Larussa.
  2. It's such a shame because I really loved his book on the 2004 season. It's like finding out there is no Santa Claus.
  3. Sigh. How I wish there was a Yankees or Red Sox player to compete on that ballot. The only groups more fanatical about blindly voting online for their teams are Yankees and Red Sox fans.
  4. I think some can but what I don't like about Prior is when he struggles he doesn't seem (yeah IMO) to be able to fight out of it. He's had a lot of success and can't deal with failure when he face's it. He's freaking fighting his way out of some rather screwed up injury issues, as well as having to deal with the ineptitude of Dusty Baker throughout his major league career. This all seems like more of the "he's not man enough" rubbish that everybody falls back on when explaining why things aren't so fine and dandy right now. I agree. How many ace pitchers have had the weight of a franchise thrust onto their shoulders and came out the better for it? As a 25 year old, I'm sure there's more than enough pressure on him, without having to battle back from consistent and random injuries. It's almost like some fans (and Dusty) think that he's supposed to pitch a perfect game every time out there.
  5. Anyone notice how newspapers for contending teams usually think that other teams are willing to trade them key pieces that will send them to the playoffs? I mean, the New York papers always assume that the Yankees and Mets will get the best player they currently don't have. Is this just a by-product of success? That you automatically think you can do anything simply because you're winning? I can't imagine that Hendry would trade Barrett. Hendry has had a jones (no pun intended) for this guy for years. To trade him now would be going against everything Hendry believed in.
  6. Really? I don't. Granted, I see several large market teams that would be interested in his services (Angels, Dodgers, maybe Boston), but I think the expectation would be that he would be a #4 hitter and a big cog into stepping up the offense. What teams do you think would allow him to sneak into the 5 spot without high expectations for performance? That's the point I'm trying to make. Large market, higher expectations. And Aramis never seems comfortable with that. When he was traded in 2003, he was the #5 guy and had Alou and Sosa in front of him. Hence the lower expectations.
  7. A 2 year $22.5m deal is not that hard to beat, not to mention, playing for somebody other than the Cubs is probably worth an additional $4-5m per year in happiness. It may not be hard to beat, but why bother? He's never intimated that he's unhappy in Chicago. To the contrary, he's always seemed a lot more at peace where the spotlight is off of him and he can produce with a higher-profile talent in front of him. Any team that would be looking to sign him would probably see him as a front-line talent with expectations on production. And any large market team that would see him more as a supporting player may not be willing to pay him top dollar. I know I wouldn't.
  8. Not only that, but as a result of his statements, I don't see him opting out at the end of the year. He recognizes that he hasn't been the best player this year, and regardless of a weak free agent market, he's still guaranteed mucho dinero next year. He always seemed like the player who would rather be paid fairly and be comfortable within a team than be high-priced and not enjoy the market he's playing in.
  9. I'm sure you mean well, but NEVER send hate mail. There's no good that can come from it. I understand your frustration with the team, but just imagine if some one sent you hate mail. Not cool.
  10. As Matt Murton gets thrown under the bus by someone other than Dusty. . .
  11. I'll be darned, Baker's more powerful than we thought. You know, considering Neifi did not play for him in San Fran. And supposedly the Cubs lost 95 games in 2001. You want facts thrown into this article? How dare you.
  12. Not that I doubt this is happening, do you have a link to verify?
  13. I messed up. I didn't see that you were staying at the Days Inn on Diversey. I thought you were staying at the one on Clark. My bad. In that case, you can't heckle Dusty in front of his home. Sorry about that. That being the case, I have to change my recommendations somewhat. Duffys on Diversey (just about two blocks east of your hotel) has a great weekend brunch and is good for "sight-seeing" if you catch my drift (of course, you're married and all). Avenue Tavern on Brodway and Oakdale is a great open-air bar (and by open air, I mean the windows are taken out for the summer. Across the street from that is Cesar's a great Mexican restaurant and home of the killer margarita. You're still only a few blocks walking from the Lincoln Park Zoo and the lakefront, which is by far one of the best views in the world. Hope these revised recommendations help you out!
  14. Should Glendon be doing any sort of lifting with his bad back and all?
  15. 1. If you want bars that are close to Wrigley, I heartily endorse the Goose Island Brewery. It's right on Clark, maybe two doors down from Wrigley. Depending on the type of crowd you're looking for, I would avoid the Cubbie Bear at all costs. It's an over-priced meatmarket that will be packed to the gills that weekend. For something more low-key, I would recommend Guthries on Addison (three blocks west of Wrigley) or any number of bars on Southport St. (five blocks west from Wrigley). 2. Since you're staying that the Lincoln Park Days Inn, I would keep your car with the valet. That way you don't have to deal with all the drivers trying to get to either the Kennedy or Lake Shore Drive. 3. Beware the beds of the Days Inn. I stayed there one night (yes, I live in Chicago. . . but it was for a good cause :) ) and they are horrible. Very springy. Overally, the Days Inn should be nothing more than a place to sleep. Don't expect too much. You'll also be right across the street from the Lincoln Park Zoo and a block away from Second City. Also, you'll be just a few steps away from where Dusty Baker and Michael Barrett live (I used to live in the building myself.) Hope this helps!
  16. If this proves nothing else, Mark Buerhle fits right in with the Cardinals clubhouse.
  17. I've always wondered why things like that don't happen a lot more often in sports. The Cubs could have got Soriano for Sosa and resigned him if they did that. I'd just throw in an extra 2 or 3 mil to the contract to get the player to do it. If he liked playing for your team and wanted to win, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. He might even get a ring out of it with his temporary team. I have to imagine that it would make life very difficult for the GM doing the trade because everyone would question his motivations for trading. And I can't imagine the player would come out smelling like roses either. Very deceptive practice.
  18. Is this the first time that Ramirez's name has come up in trade speculation? From everything Hendry's said, he sees Ramirez as one of the cornerstones of the Cubs offense for the long term. I would think this is just speculation on the writer's part, but was curious if anyone has heard anything.
  19. As Bruce Kimm gets his interviwing suit back from the cleaners. . .
  20. I think the idea of eliminating the American & National Leagues is interesting, but poses a problem for the postseason. There needs to be some division so as to match up opposition: NBA West/East, NFL/AFL, etc. And I disagree with his assertion that the DH makes the game more boring. Most fans would rather see a David Ortiz change the game with one swing than Tony Larussa micro-manage his bullpen. Yes, the NL has more strategy involved, but it doesn't make it more "exciting."
  21. I was going for a little hyperbole there, sorry. You're certainly correct with your statements.
  22. Inappropriate would be torching Mariotti's car, verbally berating his children and kicking his dog. Inappropriate also was Ozzie's behavior during the Texas game when Sean Tracy wouldn't bean Blalock. If Mariotti had positioned his argument in such a way that didn't inflame emotion, Ozzie's response would have been completely out of line. However, I stand behind the fact that it is reasonable to get angry if someone attacks you personally and mouth off. You just need to use appropriate words that go beyond being extremely irritated.
  23. You're all absolutely right about the derogatory sexual slurs. I'm not debating that at all. They have no place anywhere. But you know what? Someone decides to badmouth me in the newspaper, I'm going to use every swear word I can find. It may not be professional in the sports sense, but attacks upon a person don't have to be professional. Both of them just need to keep their traps shut if nothing productive is going to come out of them.
  24. Whatever. Mariotti is given free reign to spill his bile not only through the Sun Times but also on Around the Horn. Is swearing about Mariotti any more childish than constantly referring to Dusty as the Rev. Johnnie B. Baker or the litany of childish pet names he's come up with with any variety of sports personalities through the years? Lest we forget, before last year's World Series, Jerry Reinsdorf was one of his favorite targets for ridicule and childish taunts. I mean seriously. There's a saying about people in glass houses.
