  1. [tweet] [/tweet] I don't know if that's inside info or just an example of the type of thing they could have in mind.
  2. The dodgers are significantly worse against lefties again, but not as awful as they used to be in 2016 Phillies are much worse as well. Conversely, the Braves murder lefties (which is why they gave us so much trouble)

  4. Much like BABIP regresses towards .300, L/R splits tend to regress to a player's overall mean. Almora playing versus righties is fine, especially with how banged up the roster is right now. And lineup doesn't matter unless you're doing something actively harmful, like batting the pitcher at cleanup. Tl;DR stop whining about Almora, if he's comfortable batting 1 or 2 that is probably worth more than the .1 runs/game it costs us over an "optimal" lineup.
  5. Hamels' homerun problem screams fluke IMO. If it truly is a fluke, he's a slightly above average starter who should cost very little to acquire. That's a massive upgrade over Chatwood. If his homerun problem is not a fluke, he's still a little better than Chatwood on a rate basis plus he will throw an extra inning+ per start. I would love someone more fun like Gausman or Stroman, but we're in a position where mediocrity like Hamels will absolutely help.
  6. There's a decent chance this was Chatwood's last start as a Cub. That's the only thing leaving me somewhat zen about this.

  8. Hamels is solid, and with his contract the prospect cost should be minimal. I feel pretty comfortable hand waving away spikes in dongs allowed if they're not due to velocity loss.
  9. That could actually be a sneaky awesome way of upgrading the rotation this year. An impact guy like Stroman probably costs someone off the ML roster, let's just say Happ or Almora. Our FO is reticent to do that during the year, but if you expand the deal to Donaldson and Stroman. pushing KB to the OF if/when both are healthy, you can trade one of those guys without hurting our position player depth.
  10. Stroman would be phenomenal, but I really doubt a deal comes together. He's the sort of guy teams seem too scared to deal during the season. He basically had a terrible April, but has been typical Stroman since, so no worries from me on him going forward.
  11. Happ is probably the best starter who gets moved this deadline, and that's not too backhanded of a compliment as he's a solid 3 win guy. I think for me the issue is that because he's #1 I worry about how inflated his price will be. There also may be some diminishing returns as he's quite similar to Lester and Quintana, though that's a much lesser consideration.
  12. I roll my eyes at a lot of the Joe bullpen whining, but what the hell. 3 righties coming up, Lester at about 100 pitches, and basically everyone good but Cishek fully rested. Why did Lester start this inning?
  13. This might have been Lester's best start of the year. I'd pull him and turn it over to the well rested pen.
  14. I'm torn. I like Happ a lot, but I'm worried about cost and I'm a little worried about how similar he is to Quintana and Lester.
  15. You picked 2 isolated examples during a month long stretch where the Cubs are killing it with RISP Fair enough. With the offense struggling at the moment, it’s just frustrating to see them come away with one in what should’ve been a big inning. Be honest, would you have been mad if Russell's ball had otherwise the same but several feet to the left and snuck through for a hit?
  16. I can't decide if I'm more encouraged by Jon getting plenty of swings and misses or discouraged that most of the balls in play have been hit super hard.
  17. That sounds reasonable. People who think he can really hit love him while those who are a little more skeptical think he's kind of a tweener. Would explain why he didn't get a ton of draft love but given our FO's strengths in identifying hitters I feel good about it.
  18. Son of a horsefeathers I'd really talked myself into him.
  19. He's a guy who pitches at the top of the zone with a high spin fastball. The fastball is down a tick, so he's still getting a ton of K's but the dongs have spiked as well.
  20. I feel like outside of the 1st round picks from 2012-15 (and Cease), their drafting hasn’t been that good and one of the reasons their farm system doesn’t rate very well. They’re a big boy organization with big boy resources and there’s no reason we couldn’t have found more guys outside of the first round. Maybe I’m just ignorant... Craig Edwards, is that you?
  21. Kyle's last 5 starts: 28 IP 33 H 2 HRs 5 BBs 25 Ks 3.54/2.94/3.30 ERA/FIP/xFIP A little less efficient than you'd like, but he is probably fixed. Quintana seems to be on his way as well. We need to acquire someone (Eovaldi!) to replace Chatwood but my dread about our rotation is starting to subside.
  22. Hendricks did something to infuriate the BABIP gods tonight. Oh well, Milwaukee's losing too and I absolutely put this in the "Encouraging" column for Kyle's prospects going forward.
  23. Based on MLB.com's ratings that's #9 and #15 from a strong system. Plus a nice AAA reliever. So something like Lange, Maples, and another guy would be our equivalent? I think I've been the biggest Britton cheerleader and I'd say horsefeathers no to that.
  24. I know some shine is off the Dillon Tate apple but that's still a better headliner than I would have been alright sending for Britton.
  25. Not at all. and I want him. The glass half full version though is that his velocity came back at the start of July. and since then he's basically been back to normal. But because of the salary and the risk involved, the prospect cost shouldn't be too high. It's kind of like Justin Verlander last year. He had a disaster start on July 2nd, that left his ERA at 4.96 and xFIP at 5.03. From then on he was JUSTIN VERLANDER again, but it still required a leap of faith to trade for him. Even at the end of August he had only been good again for 8 weeks. Sometimes it works out, but quite often it doesn't.
